Fresh off their first win in franchise history, the New York Riptide announced Monday that they’ve signed Myles Jones to a protected practice player contract.

The new franchise adds Jones, the former Duke star and current Chaos LC player in the Premier Lacrosse League. He’s also a Long Island native, having starred as an All-American at Walt Whitman High School.

“We’re excited to have Myles as part of our organization,” Riptide and U.S. national team coach Regy Thorpe said. “He is a guy that we’ve had at training camps for US Indoor over the past few years. He doesn’t have a lot of box experience but he has a lot upside and wants to learn and evolve his game. His size, speed and athleticism will fit in well with our team.”

With Duke, Jones helped the Blue Devils to national championships in 2013 and 2014. There, he emerged as one of the best midfielders in college lacrosse history — still holding Duke midfielder records with 231 career points and 77 single-season points. He was the first midfielder in NCAA history with 100 points and 100 assists.

Jones joined the MLL shortly after graduating from Duke, where he played for the Atlanta Blaze and Chesapeake Bayhawks. This past summer, he joined the PLL’s Chaos for the league’s inaugural season, scoring 21 points.

While Jones has minimal box lacrosse experience, he competed for the U.S. indoor team as part of its Blue-White exhibition in Baltimore in January of 2018. Thorpe got a glimpse at his new player then, maybe a sign of things to come.

“He’s definitely got the build and the drive,” said Thorpe, who noted that a couple of NLL teams reached out to him after the game inquiring about Jones, among others.
