In his first career start, North Carolina goalie Caton Johnson made an impressive 21 saves to fuel a 10-8 upset victory over then-No. 5 Duke on Saturday. He anchored a defense that held the fifth-ranked Blue Devils scoreless over the final 17:50.
His save total, which included nine in the fourth quarter, set a new UNC freshman record, making him the Warrior/US Lacrosse Player of the Week. It was the most saves by a UNC goalkeeper since Kieran Burke had 21 saves against Harvard on March 17, 2015 in a 15-10 Tar Heels victory.
Prior to Saturday's performance, Johnson had only played eight minutes this season.
