Pat Spencer, a senior attackman at Loyola and two-time Tewaaraton Award finalist, has been named the Warrior/US Lacrosse Division I Men’s Preseason Player of the Year, as featured in the January edition of US Lacrosse Magazine.

Spencer has stockpiled accolades going back to his freshman year with the Greyhounds, who are ranked No. 6 in the Nike/US Lacrosse Preseason Top 20. He’s a three-time Patriot League Offensive Player of the Year and USILA All-American.

Last year, Spencer won the Turnbull Award that recognizes the nation’s top attackman. He set single-season Loyola marks in assists (59) and points (94) while becoming the school’s all-time assists leader.

Spencer will take 166 careers assists and 266 points — already Patriot League records — into his senior season. He should easily become Loyola’s career leader in points. (Gary Hanley established the current mark of 311 in 1981.)

A former star point guard in high school, Spencer wants to use his final year of eligibility to play Division I basketball. He still rates his passions evenly between the two sports and competes in a summer league near his home in Davidsonville, Md.

But for the next five months, Spencer is laser-focused on lacrosse. He led Loyola to the final four as a freshman in 2016 and to the NCAA quarterfinals last year.

“The end goal that’s driving me now is winning a national championship,” Spencer said.

The Greyhounds host Virginia, ranked one spot ahead of them at No. 5 in the Nike/US Lacrosse Preseason Top 20, in their season opener Feb. 9. Loyola’s rigorous non-conference slate also includes dates at Johns Hopkins, Rutgers and Duke.
