Grant Ament, a redshirt senior attackman at Penn State and a 2019 Tewaaraton finalist who shattered the single-season NCAA assists mark last year, has been named the US Lacrosse Magazine Division I Men's Preseason Player of the Year.

Preseason accolades, along with Top 20 rankings, will be featured in the January edition of US Lacrosse Magazine, which drops Jan. 2.

Ament led the nation in points per game (7.41) and assists per game (5.65), surpassing the previous single-season assists record of 77 shared by Steve Marohl (UMBC, 1992) and Lyle Thompson (Albany, 2014). His 96 assists helped him to compile 126 points, a Big Ten and program record. He tied an NCAA tournament record with 25 points and set the NCAA tournament record with 18 assists despite Penn State's loss in a semifinal to Yale.

All this after sitting out the previous season with a foot injury.

The Nittany Lions open the 2020 season at No. 1 in the Nike/US Lacrosse Preseason Division I Men's Top 20, and head coach Jeff Tambroni returns much of his high-octane offense. With many of Ament's favorite targets back for another ride, it's fair to say Penn State enters the season with high expectations.

Having already rewritten the NCAA, Big Ten and program record books, what can Ament possibly do for an encore? It's one of the top storylines to watch in 2020.
