The National Lacrosse League revealed the name of an expansion franchise in Philadelphia in a special event Wednesday morning at XFINITY Live. Philly gets its Wings.

The new-look Philadelphia Wings will debut in 2018-19. A previous NLL franchise named the Wings operated in Philadelphia from 1986-2014, winning six league titles, before it was shipped to New England and rebranded the Black Wolves. The Wings were one of the four original teams in the Eagle Box Lacrosse League that began play in 1987 and was twice renamed — as the Major Indoor Lacrosse League in 1989 and then the National Lacrosse League in 1998.

The bereavement period for Philadelphia’s rabid box lacrosse fan base did not last long. In September, the NLL announced it would bring a team back to the city and that the name would be decided by a fan vote. The Philadelphia Fire, the Philadelphia Founders and the Philadelphia Wings were the finalists.

“The Wings are clearly the favorite, and we’re happy to give the fans what they want,” Lindsey Masciangelo, the team’s executive director of business operations, said in a press release. “Respecting the fans’ desire for the Wings name, we wanted the look to feel fresh, but also pay homage to the history of indoor lacrosse in Philadelphia.”

The Wings also unveiled a throwback logo with its familiar “W” to go with a red, gold and charcoal color scheme. The “P” on the side of the uniform, representing Philadelphia, will serve as a secondary logo and resonates with the Philadelphia Flyers of the National Hockey League. Both teams are owned by Comcast Spectacor.
