Dialed In: Your Lacrosse Fix for Wednesday, July 12
Good morning. Here’s the latest from around the lacrosse world:
1. Season three of Athletes Unlimited Lacrosse starts July 20 at USA Lacrosse in Sparks, Md.
Athletes Unlimited signed 11 new athletes Tuesday. The haul includes midfielders Erica Evans (Canisius/Maryland), Amy Moreau (UMass), Hannah Dorney (Notre Dame), Sam Fiedler (Loyola), Bri Gross (Vanderbilt), Molly Garrett (Michigan) and Katie Ramsay (USC), attacker TT Naslonski (Rutgers), defenders Melissa Hawkins (Vanderbilt) and Emma Wightman (Florida/USC) and goalie Kat Buchanan (James Madison).
Fifty-six athletes are now under contract for the four-week campaign. The roster includes returnees Taylor Moreno, Charlotte North and Sam Apuzzo as well as rookies Katie Detwiler, Jenn Medjid and Abby Bosco.
Athletes Unlimited also introduced several changes to the rules and scoring system. Beth Ann Mayer wrote a primer for the season.
2. The USA Lacrosse Youth Nationals got underway with 122 games Tuesday at DE Turf Sports Complex in Frederica, Del.
A total of 82 teams with more than 1,500 players from 17 states are competing in the event, which features some of the top club programs from across the country.
There was plenty of star power in attendance, as well, with Taylor Cummings, Ally Kennedy, Rachel Clark and Emma Ward all on hand to interact with the 15U, 14U and 13U athletes.
Champions will be crowned today, starting with the 14U final at 1:30 p.m. ET followed by the 15U final at 3 p.m. ET. Both games will be streamed live on LacrosseTV.
3. A busy college offseason of coach and player movement continued Tuesday, as Youngstown State named Rob Harris as its new women’s lacrosse coach. Harris went 102-45 in nine seasons as the head coach at Division II Davenport.
On the men’s side, Inside Lacrosse reported Tuesday that assistant coach Dave Metzbower is leaving North Carolina to take the same position on Matt Brown’s staff at Denver. Metzbower has been the offensive coordinator at Princeton, Loyola and North Carolina.
