Livy Rosenzweig Already a Draw Dynamo in First Full Pro Season
Livy Rosenzweig’s name is at or near the top of every major offensive category for a Loyola women’s lacrosse program that’s been around since 1973.
Fourth in goals (209), first in assists (230) and points (439) and second in draw controls (413), Rosenzweig is one of the best players in Patriot League history.
A sure fit for the professional lacrosse landscape, Rosenzweig was selected 12th in the 2022 Athletes Unlimited Lacrosse College Draft coming of a career in which she graduated as one of two players in NCAA history with 200-plus goals and 200-plus assists (Kylie Ohlmiller).
A for-sure shoe-in for the pros.
But Rosenzweig was absent from the 2022 Athletes Unlimited Lacrosse season — and the reason was simple.
“I was drafted that summer out of college, and I had just started my master’s program and had classes during the week, so I wasn’t able to play,” she said. “I would have missed some things for AU.”
In 2023, Rosenzweig coached at Loyola first as a volunteer, then as a part-time staffer. She was back with a stick in her hands, gliding around the field and playing in scout drills.
Maybe not total game shape, but close to it.
Rosenzweig was placed on the injury replacement list for Athletes Unlimited that summer, and she got her shot at the pros. She started seven games with 13 goals and seven assists. In that truncated pro debut, she led the league with 46 draw controls — breaking the single-game record (13) in the process.
It was a successful return into the lacrosse limelight. A staple during weekly highlight reels while in college, Rosenzweig’s time away from playing allowed for others to take center stage.
Her 2024 Athletes Unlimited showing, though, has her squarely back in the minds of every women’s lacrosse fan out there. Entering the season’s final weekend at USA Lacrosse headquarters in Sparks, Md., Rosenzweig is No. 11 on the individual leaderboard — just a single point behind Sam Geiersbach at No. 10.
She’s controlled 74 draws, five off the single-season record set by Taylor Cummings in 2021, and has contributed five goals and two assists. She’s back to excelling in her claim to fame at Loyola — winning possession for her team.
Players are awarded four points for every draw they control. Rosenzweig’s 296 points from draws are 124 ahead of the second-best performer on the draw (Sam Apuzzo).
“You can’t do anything without possession,” Rosenzweig said Sunday after her team (Team North) dispatched Team Kennedy. “When you have the ball, you’re in control. So yes, it’s nice that there are more points [for the draw] this year, but it’s still good for the team when we get draws so we have a chance to score and control the game.”
It wasn’t as easy for Rosenzweig to prepare for this season because she was no longer coaching at Loyola. The stick wasn’t always nearby.
She called it “difficult” to get back in the swing of things.
“I think it was a little bit harder to get back into it,” she said. “But now we’re on week three, and I’m starting to find my flow a little bit, which is nice.”
Starting to find her flow? Rosenzweig sure looks like a player who hasn’t skipped a beat, with her ability to win possessions directly contributing to teammate (and captain) Charlotte North’s record-breaking eight-goal performance on Sunday.
She’ll play for Ally Kennedy in the final three games of the season, beginning Thursday, after Kennedy used her first draft choice to keep her away from the competition.
That’s how valuable Rosenzweig has been.
Rosenzweig has enjoyed the fast-paced play of Athletes Unlimited Lacrosse. A faster pace and more scoring also leads to more draw chances — an ancillary benefit for one of the college game’s all-time draw maestros.
