About five weeks after Chris Gabrielli resigned as the head coach of Providence, the Friars appear to have his replacement.
Bobby Benson, the Maryland offensive coordinator who helped the Terps offense to the No. 1 ranking in the nation this season, will be named Providence's next coach, according to Chris Jastrzembski and Inside Lacrosse. Benson spent two years with Maryland after 14 with Johns Hopkins.
Gabrielli resigned on May 4, leaving Providence with an opening for the first time in 10 seasons. Inside Lacrosse had reported that Benson was on the short list from the start after helping Maryland to a 33-1 record the past two seasons, a run that culminated with an undefeated season and a national championship.
Benson helped produce consecutive Tewaaraton Award winners in Jared Bernhardt (2021) and Logan Wisnauskas (2022). Under his watch, the Maryland career scoring record fell in consecutive seasons. Bernhardt broke the record last season, and Wisnauskas followed this spring.
The university has not yet announced the hiring.
