Chris Wojcik will not return as the Harvard men’s lacrosse coach in 2020, according to multiple reports.
Wojcik, the Crimson’s head coach since 2011, led the team to a share of the Ivy League regular season championship and an at-large bid to the NCAA tournament in 2014. But Harvard has faded the last two seasons, going winless in April for the second straight year. All told, the Crimson compiled an even 65-65 record in Wojcik’s eight seasons at the helm.
News of his ouster was first reported by College Crosse’s Chris Jastrzembski and confirmed by Inside Lacrosse, which obtained a message from Wojcik to recruits informing them he would not be back in Cambridge.
Wojcik, a two-sport standout as a student-athlete at Harvard, started his coaching career as an assistant at his alma mater before becoming the offensive coordinator at Bowdoin and then Penn. He returned to the Crimson as head coach after John Tillman left for Maryland following the 2010 season.
UPDATE: The school sent out this press release on Friday afternoon.
CAMBRIDGE, Mass. – Harvard Athletics will begin a search for a new men's lacrosse head coach as Chris Wojcik '96, who served as The Frisbie Family Head Coach for Harvard Men's Lacrosse for the past nine seasons, will not return for the 2020 campaign.
"We are grateful for Chris' leadership and dedication over the past nine years," said Bob Scalise MBA '89, The John D. Nichols '53 Family Director of Athletics. "I know how much this program means to him - both as our coach and as a Harvard alumnus and outstanding former student-athlete. I know that he will always be a part of the legacy and traditions of Harvard Athletics."
Wojcik posted a 65-65 overall record in nine seasons, which featured three Ivy League tournament finals appearances, and recorded a pair of 10-win campaigns. In 2014, Wojcik led Harvard to its first Ivy League title in 24 years and an at-large berth to the NCAA tournament, its first since 2006.
"It's been a privilege to coach at Harvard and lead the men's lacrosse program," Wojcik said. "I cherish the relationships I have built with the student-athletes, and I am grateful for the opportunity to have mentored so many fine young men on and off the field. Thank you to Bob Scalise for giving me the opportunity and thank you to so many players, former players, and alumni for their support over the years. I wish the Harvard lacrosse program the best of luck, and I will be rooting for the team next season and most importantly in their lives after college."
