Led by a dominant performance from faceoff specialist Conor Mackie, Yale continued its resurgence with a 16-13 victory at No. 11 Princeton. Mackie, a junior from New Jersey, had a monster day in his home state, winning 26-of-33 faceoffs while scooping up 18 ground balls.
In the last three games, Mackie has won 67-of-88 faceoffs (76.1 percent), leading to Yale wins over Fairfield, Cornell and Princeton after the Bulldogs began the season with a 1-3 record. All of the sudden, Yale is now 4-3 and 2-0 in the Ivy League.
Friday afternoon’s win before a nationally-televised audience on ESPNU also saw Yale Tewaaraton Award candidate Ben Reeves continue his hot streak. After being limited to just one assist in the first four games of the season due to injuries, Reeves has now scored four goals in three of the last four games.
"We know he is going to be a great player," said Yale head coach Andy Shay. "We know he's going to be a great leader. He was very composed today in some tense moments."
Reeves had a season-high eight points on four goals and four assists. Reeves third goal gave Yale an 8-4 lead late in first half, but Princeton scored the final two goals of the first half, and then Zack Currier scored consecutive goals in the first two minutes of the second half to tie the game 8-8.
Yale responded with five straight goals, but Princeton (5-3, 1-1 Ivy) wasn’t done. The Tigers pulled to within two goals twice in the fourth quarter, the last time on Currier’s goal with 4:58 that made it 15-13. Joseph Sessa’s goal with 2:41 to play sealed the victory for Yale.
Gavin McBride led Princeton’s offense with five goals and two assists, and despite a rough day at the faceoff X, Currier had a big offensive game with four goals and two assists. Princeton goalie Tyler Blaisdell made 18 saves.
