The first-place Saskatchewan Rush just landed a legend.
The Rochester Knighthawks dealt Dan Dawson, the National Lacrosse League’s No. 5 all-time leading scorer, to the Rush in a trade for a second-round draft pick this year and a third-round choice in 2020.
Dawson, 36, is in his 17th NLL season and has played in 234 straight games dating back to 2002, the longest active streak in the league. He is fourth all-time in NLL history in assists (802) and fifth in goals (469) and points (1,271).
Dawson played parts of six seasons with the Knighthawks after being acquired from the Philadelphia Wings on Dec. 14, 2012. He was a key member of Rochester’s NLL title-winning teams in 2013 and 2014, earning 2014 championship game MVP honors and breaking Cody Jamieson’s single-season assists record with 72 that year.
Dawson had become the odd man out in the Rochester lineup during the Knighthawks current three-game winning streak that has propelled them back into playoff contention.
“He did everything we asked and more,” said Curt Styres, the team’s owner and general manager. “We won two championships with Dan and we are very grateful (to him). He is a class act and a team-first guy. He leads by example and shows the rookies the right way to conduct themselves. He is a Hall of Famer and the league’s Ironman.”
Dawson has nine goals and 17 assists this season.
“After thinking long and hard about it, we can’t have our cake and eat it too,” Styres added. “With Dan ready to play and being a scratch — for all he’s done for lacrosse — he deserves to play. With us playing lights out the last three games, it would be tough to make any changes to the lineup.”
The Rush, who are 9-2 and in first place in the NLL West, get a big-bodied righty forward in the 6-foot-5, 218-pound Dawson — not to mention a one-time NLL MVP, an honor he earned in 2009 as a member of the Boston Blazers.
Dawson also has played for the Columbus Landsharks, Arizona Sting and Portland LumberJax during his career.
