For the better part of the last four decades, Ohio State and Notre Dame have met in one of most anticipated matchups of each team's schedule. When the Irish and Buckeyes meet, fans can expect tough defense, vicious rides and plenty of offensive firepower.

Saturday's meeting at the Shoe in Columbus did not disappoint.

Jack Myers dropped four goals and three assists to lead Ohio State to the 14-11 victory over Notre Dame on a blustery and cold afternoon. Goalie Skylar Wahlund stepped into the cage after the first quarter and made seven saves to keep Ohio State in front for most of the game.

Pat Kavanagh and Reilly Gray helped give Notre Dame the early 2-0 lead within the first three minutes. Eric Dobson and Quinn McMahon added goals to give the Irish the 4-2 margin early in the second quarter, a lead that would soon vanish. Myers scored three goals in a six-goal run over halftime, helping give Ohio State the 8-4 lead with 11:57 left in the third quarter. Notre Dame mounted a rapid comeback midway through the third quarter, getting goals from Jose Boyer, Morrison Mirer and Wheaton Jackoboice within 83 seconds to pull within 8-7.

Jackson Reid scored off a rebound from a shot taken 30 yards out as the seconds ticked down in the third quarter (a goal that looked like it came after the buzzer), giving the Buckeyes an 11-8 lead entering the fourth quarter. Notre Dame scored three of the next four goals, including Kavanagh's second tally, to cut the deficit to 12-11 with 5:19 left. Leading by just one, Ohio State won the ensuing three faceoffs to maintain possession and hold off the Irish. 

Reid and Myers added goals to seal the victory, Ohio State's second over an ACC opponent this year.

CORNELL WINS THRILLER

Just over two years ago Saturday, Cornell battled Penn State in a top 5 matchup that became the game of the year — an 18-17 Big Red victory that ultimately served as their last game before the COVID-19 pandemic.

After a 4-0 start to the 2022 season, Cornell found themselves in a similar situation against the same opponent.

In a game moved to Holuba Hall due to inclement weather, Cornell and Penn State produced another classic. Aiden Blake’s goal with 1:52 remaining proved to be the winner, as the Big Red took down the Nittany Lions 16-15 in a game that featured more than a few runs.

Cornell started with the momentum, scoring the game’s first six goals, all in the first quarter. John Piatelli had three straight goals to kickstart the Big Red run to make it 6-0 early. Penn State responded by scoring eight of the next 10 goals, including two from Ethan Long, to take an 8-7 lead into halftime.

Piatelli and Michael Long each tallied two goals in a run of six out of seven goals to help put Cornell up 13-9 toward the end of the third quarter. CJ Kirst added one of his two goals to start the fourth quarter and give his team a 14-10 lead.

Penn State wasn’t done quite yet, putting together a four-goal run over a six-minute span to tie the score at 14-14 with 5:32 remaining in the game. Long and Luke Mercer traded goals in the next few minutes, until Blake added his 10^th goal of the season to put Cornell ahead for good.

MARYLAND DOMINATES ALBANY INDOORS

In a matter of minutes, Maryland men’s lacrosse found out it would face off with Albany in Jones-Hill House (the old Cole Field House) on Saturday morning, instead of Capital One Field. The Terps were poised to host their first indoor game of men’s lacrosse.

Also in the matter of minutes, Maryland turned what is typically a heated rivalry into a blowout. The Terps pulled in double digits in the first quarter, led by 16 at half and cruised to the 24-6 victory over the Great Danes.

Logan Wisnauskas poured in six points, and Jonathan Donville added a hat trick, to help Maryland pull away early. Daniel Kelly scored four goals to help keep the home team ahead throughout the second half.

BUNDY JR. SHINES

The Richmond area escaped the worst of the winter storm that swept through the Mid-Atlantic on Saturday morning. However, the Spiders could not avoid the presence of All-American Graham Bundy Jr. and the Georgetown Hoyas.

Bundy Jr. scored a season-high five goals to help Georgetown jump out to a large lead and hold on for the 15-10 victory over Richmond in a bounceback game for the Hoyas.

Georgetown opened the game on a 5-0 run that included five different goal scorers. Bundy notched his first goal to end the run with 5:46 left in the first quarter. He added a second to help the Hoyas take a 7-3 lead into the second quarter.

Down as many as five goals in the first half, Richmond scored three straight goals over halftime to cut the deficit to 10-8 with 10:41 in the third quarter on a Ryan Lanchbury goal. Every time Richmond pulled within two goals, Bundy Jr. ended the run.

He scored with eight seconds left in the third quarter to push the lead to 11-8, and followed with two straight goals when the Spiders cut the deficit to 11-9. Declan McDermott and Alex Trippi added goals in the final four minutes to help Georgetown pull away for the road win.

HARVARD UPSETS MICHIGAN IN ANN ARBOR

Harvard men’s lacrosse had been an afterthought in preseason talks about the potential of the Ivy League in 2022. With the successes of Cornell, Princeton, Brown and Yale, the Crimson headed to Ann Arbor looking to join that discussion.

Harvard took an early lead and held off No. 15 Michigan throughout the second half to pull off a 14-9 upset victory on Saturday afternoon. Nick Loring led the Crimson offense with two goals and five assists, while Sam King and Owen Gaffney each had three goals and two assists.

After a back-and-forth first quarter, Loring and Gaffney score consecutive goals to give Harvard the 5-2 lead with 11:18 left in the half. Michael Boehm had a no-angle, around-the-world goal toward the end of the half for Michigan, but Harvard took a 6-4 lead into the break.

The Wolverines briefly cut the deficit to one goal, but Loring and King led a three-goal rally to push the lead to 9-5 in the third quarter. Hayden Cheek got on the scoreboard to start the fourth quarter and give Harvard the 11-6 lead, and Gaffney added another 10 minutes later to push the margin to six goals with 4:33 left.

Michigan could not claw back despite goals from Boehm and Jake Bonomi in the final four minutes.

NOTABLE

• Boston U jumped ahead early and score multiple highlight-reel goals to down Bucknell 12-7 in a battle of Patriot League undefeated teams. Vince D'Alto and Jake Cates each had hat tricks in the Terriers' victory.

• Devon McLane scores five second-half goals to lead Brown back from a halftime deficit to beat Stony Brook 10-7. McLane now boasts 21 goals and 14 assists in six games for the Bears.

• Drew McGill made a game-saving stop and Max Semple scored with 3:18 left in double overtime to seal Drexel’s 11-10 win over Marquette. The Dragons have now won four straight games.

• Mac Gates had 11 saves and Chase Patterson won 11 of 12 faceoffs to lead Hofstra to the 8-4 win over Manhattan.
