Sean Quirk, the longtime head coach of the Cannons, announced Friday evening that he will step down. Quirk, who coached the Cannons for seven years and stayed on even as Major League Lacrosse merged with the Premier Lacrosse League, cited a recent heart surgery as a reason for his departure.

Quirk led the then-Boston Cannons to the 2020 MLL championship and orchestrated the trade with Atlas LC that brought Paul Rabil back to the Cannons ahead of the club’s first season in the PLL.

“Like any journey there are ups and downs, I will forever cherish each relationship built, practice, game, team meeting, film session, collegiate draft and the 2020 championship in which the Cannons celebrated prior to the merger,” Quirk said in a statement.

In his statement, Quirk said that he looks forward to continuing with the league and staying involved with the PLL Academy.

Quirk had a 32-50 coaching record during his seven years with the Cannons and 4-15 in the PLL. Prior to joining the professional coaching ranks in 2016, Quirk was a highly successful coach at Endicott College, where he is now an associate athletic director. Quirk compiled a 243-97 record from 1998-2015 with nine NCAA tournament appearances.
