Siena has tabbed another top Albany assistant to helm its men’s lacrosse program.
Liam Gleason, who spent the past seven seasons as the associate head coach and defensive coordinator for the Great Danes, was announced as the Saints’ new head coach Tuesday. He succeeds John Svec, the one-time Albany assistant with whom Siena parted ways in May after seven seasons. Gleason has experience with the university, having served as the Saints’ defensive coordinator under Brian Brecht (now at Rutgers) from 2008-2010.
College Crosse and Spectrum News initially reported the news of Gleason’s hire Monday.
Gleason will be introduced at a press conference Thursday afternoon.
“It was very evident when he was here that he possessed the makeup to be a successful head coach,” Siena athletic director John D’Argenio said in a press release. “He comes from an outstanding program at UAlbany, where he was part of the team’s national success, while also being an accomplished recruiter in the geographic areas where Siena has been successful in the past.”
It’s been an eventful offseason for Albany, which tied a school record with 16 wins and advanced to the final four for the first time in its history. All-American faceoff specialist TD Ierlan transferred to Yale, which ended the Great Danes’ season in the NCAA semifinals en route to the championship.
Gleason, who according to College Crosse had been courted for other head coaching positions in the past, led an underrated Albany defense ranked 11th nationally in allowing just 8.63 goals per game. He also was instrumental in the development of first-team All-American goalie JD Colarusso.
Gleason, a Long Island native, played collegiately at Albany for two seasons after transferring from Division II Adelphi. He graduated from Albany in 2007.
Siena has not had a winning season since 2014, when the Saints won the MAAC regular season and tournament titles en route to the NCAA tournament. Siena’s combined record in four seasons since then is 14-39.
“I’m excited for the opportunity to build Siena back into a MAAC championship contender,” Gleason said in the press release. “I look forward to rekindling the relationships I previously made with our loyal alumni base.”
