Continuing a recent trend of the sport’s top athletes pursuing a final season of college eligibility in a different sport, Virginia All-American midfielder Dox Aitken has committed to play football at Villanova this fall, according to a source with knowledge of the situation.
Aitken, a three-time USILA All-American on the lacrosse field, was a standout football player in high school at the Haverford School. A wide receiver, defensive back and punter, Aitken was the Inter-Ac Player of the Year and an all-city and all-county honoree. As a senior in 2015, he led the Fords to an undefeated (10-0) season, setting school records for receiving yards (858) and touchdown receptions (11) in a season.
Aitken, who had 44 goals to help Virginia win the NCAA Division I men’s lacrosse championship last spring, follows in the recent footsteps of three other first-team All-Americans from last season.
Tewaaraton winner Pat Spencer of Loyola is playing Big Ten basketball at Northwestern this winter. A point guard, Spencer is second on Northwestern in scoring (10.6 ppg) and leads the team in assists (94) and steals (20).
Two current seniors, Maryland’s Jared Bernhardt and Duke’s J.T. Giles-Harris, have announced plans to pursue playing college football after their lacrosse careers wind up this spring.
Bernhardt was a highly-coveted football recruit out of Lake Brantley (Fla.) High School, including an offer to play football at Navy. Giles-Harris, an all-state football player at St. Joseph Regional High School in New Jersey, is the younger brother of Jacksonville Jaguars linebacker Joe Giles-Harris.
Villanova, Aitken’s hometown school, competes in the NCAA’s Football Championship Subdivision (FCS). The Wildcats reached the NCAA FCS playoffs this past season, their seventh trip to the playoffs since 2008. Villanova won the 2009 national championship.
Aitken, a captain for the Cavaliers, already holds Virginia’s career goals record for a midfielder (114) and has a pair of goals and an assist in Virginia’s 2-0 start this season. The Cavaliers host Princeton tomorrow.
