After the NCAA Division I Council officially voted to grant a blanket waiver to spring student-athletes, the NCAA’s transfer portal was flooded with new entries Tuesday.
According to a source, two IWCLA All-Americans entered the portal: USC’s Kerrigan Miller and Virginia’s Sammy Mueller.
Miller, a standout midfielder for the Women of Troy and member of the U.S. national team, is a two-time Pac-12 Midfielder of the Year. She was an IWLCA second-team All-American in 2019 and a third-team All-American in 2018. In 66 games with USC, Miller has compiled 104 goals, 39 assists, 158 ground balls, 120 caused turnovers and 157 draw controls.
Mueller, the Virginia midfielder, was an IWLCA first-team All-American last year and a third-team All-American the year before. In 62 career games, she’s tallied 165 goals, 49 assists, 171 ground balls and 204 draw controls.
Others to enter the portal, the source said, include Katie Bourque (21 goals for Dartmouth in five games this year), Maddie McDaniel (nine goals and 28 draw controls for James Madison) and Morgan Alexander, who started three of four games for Syracuse before tearing her ACL.
Entering the transfer portal does not guarantee that the student-athlete will attend a new school next season. Players can withdraw from the portal just as easily as they can add their names and instead decide to return to their current schools.
Miller, Mueller, Bourque, McDaniel and Alexander are all seniors, meaning they would likely pursue graduate school opportunities. Alexander was already a fifth-year senior at Syracuse, having redshirted three different seasons due to injuries.
