Matthew Stockfeder, a senior midfielder for the St. John’s men’s lacrosse team, has been arrested for reportedly stabbing his roommate during a fight that occurred at a house off campus in the early-morning hours Tuesday, police told New York media Wednesday.

According to reports by the New York Post and Daily News, the fight stemmed from an argument over loud music and taunting text messages. The Post identified the victim as Justin Corpolongo, a 2018 St. John’s graduate and former faceoff specialist for the Red Storm.

Corpolongo, 23, and Stockfeder, 21, share an apartment a few blocks from the house. After Corpolongo complained about the volume of Stockfeder’s music, Stockfeder left angrily and, according to the reports, repeatedly texted Corpolongo with teasing remarks.

Corpolongo reportedly showed up at the house at around midnight to confront Stockfeder. After they wrestled each other to the ground, Stockfeder allegedly grabbed a knife and stabbed Corpolongo deep enough to penetrate his small intestine.

Corpolongo needed surgery but is expected to survive, according to the reports.

Stockfeder appeared in 14 games as a short-stick defensive midfielder last season and was a team captain. He surrendered to police Wednesday and was charged with assault.

St. John’s removed bios of both players from its athletics website. A spokesperson said in a statement that the university is aware of the incident and cooperating with authorities.
