There were just 12 Division I women’s lacrosse games on Sunday, but five ranked contests helped get a better picture of the national landscape.

Much of the focus Sunday was out West, where four Pac-12 teams continue to jockey for position.

ASU UPSETS RUTGERS

Playing its fourth ranked opponent in a row (and coming off losses to the first three), Arizona State needed a win. The Sun Devils had been outscored by USC, Florida and Stony Brook by a combined 54-24, and their national profile was losing some steam.

But the Sun Devils went to Piscataway to take on No. 13 Rutgers and leave Jersey with a 13-12 overtime win. Arizona State (5-6) scored the final two goals of the fourth quarter, and Carley Adams scored the winner in the extra period.

Rutgers (10-2) led 10-6 after Marin Hartshorn’s goal with 4:43 left in the third quarter, but ASU then scored the next three goals, cutting the deficit to 10-9. Jenna Byrne eventually put the Scarlet Knights up 12-10, and Sophia Cardello made two saves on the same possession to maintain a 12-11 lead late. But Taylor Pinzone scored the equalizer with 53 seconds left in regulation.

Pinzone had two goals and three assists, and Emily Glagolev had four goals.

USC BESTS MICHIGAN

No. 17 USC scored nine of 10 goals during a stretch of more than 30 minutes, which was more than enough to outlast No. 14 Michigan 14-10. In a contest featuring two of the top midfield units in the country, the Women of Troy caused 17 turnovers and won the ground ball battle 15-10.

Kelsey Huff continued her stellar season with four goals, freshman Maddie Dora had three goals and one assist and Maggie Brown had two goals and two assists for USC (8-2). Kaley Thompson scored three times for Michigan (9-4), which has now lost three straight games.

COLORADO THUMPS CAL

Sam McGee scored five goals and Charlie Rudy had three goals and three assists as Colorado (9-3, 4-3 Pac-12) cruised past Cal 17-9.

Colorado outshot Cal (1-12, 1-6 Pac-12) 43-26, forced Cal into five failed clears and outdrew the Golden Bears 19-9. The Buffs scored the game’s first five goals and never looked back.

STANFORD WINS THIRD STRAIGHT

No. 19 Stanford (8-5, 6-1 Pac-12) beat Oregon for the second straight Sunday, as Ali Baiocco had four goals and one assist in a 17-5 win. Ashley Humphrey had one goal and three assists, and Ailish Kelly had a hat trick.

Stanford led 8-1 after the first quarter and 12-3 by halftime.

NOTABLE

  • Jacksonville trailed by two at halftime and by four early in the third quarter but scored six unanswered goals to ultimately beat Cornell 10-9 at USA Lacrosse HQ. Grace Hobson had three assists for Jacksonville (7-3), which also got two goals each from Molly Brock, Lauren Craft and Madeline Cloyd.

  • No. 3 Northwestern improved to 10-2 with a 17-9 win over Penn in which Lauren Gilbert and Jill Girardi each produced four goals and one assist. Girardi also controlled eight draws.

  • No. 16 Richmond (10-2, 4-0 A10) got four goals and one assist from Sophia DiCenso and three goals and two assists from Nicole Concannon in a 21-7 win over Saint Joseph’s.
