The 2020 Major League Lacrosse Collegiate Draft opened with a bang Monday night, as the New York Lizards selected Yale’s TD Ierlan with the No. 1 overall pick.
Ierlan, who — statistically speaking — is the best faceoff specialist in college lacrosse history, would be an instant boon to a Lizards team that struggled at the dot last season and lost Greg Puskuldjian to the Premier Lacrosse League.
It remains to be seen which of the two pro leagues Ierlan will choose, but the Lizards showed confidence by taking him first overall. Ierlan, who is not in the NCAA transfer portal, would appear to be done with this collegiate career given Yale’s stance on graduate student eligibility.
Michael Kraus, Virginia’s standout attackman, went second overall to the Connecticut Hammerheads. The Lizards selected again at No. 3 and took Utah’s Colin Burke, an attackman who was inside the top 20 in the nation in both goals and assists this season.
Then, the defenders started flying off the shelves. The Boston Cannons selected Syracuse’s Nick Mellen at No. 4, followed by the Denver Outlaws’ selection of Army’s Tom Rigney. The Chesapeake Bayhawks closed the first round with Yale’s Will Weitzel, a long-stick midfielder.
