The most-played rivalry in college lacrosse produced a shootout Friday, as No. 4 Cornell opened its season with a 19-16 victory over upstart Hobart in Geneva, N.Y.
Tewaaraton candidate Jeff Teat, maligned toward the end of last season for his inability to shed shutoff tactics, broke free for six goals (on seven shots) and two assists, spearheading a potent Big Red attack that combined for 20 points. Line mates Clarke Petterson and John Piatelli each contributed four goals and two assists.
Hobart, which pushed the pace in high-scoring wins over Canisius and Siena to start its season, remained within striking distance for most of a game in which the teams combined for 45 turnovers and 97 shots. Even after Cornell scored three goals in a 66-second span to take a six-goal lead in the fourth quarter, the Statesmen showed fight, netting the last three goals of regulation. They were undone, however, by clearing inefficiency (15-for-24) and 22 turnovers.
Justin Scott scored five goals, while faceoff workhorse Matthew Pedicine, coming off of a record setting 32-for-37 performance against Siena, went 22-for-39 in the losing cause.
Friday marked the 138th all-time meeting between Cornell and Hobart, a series that dates back to 1898.
