For all the superlatives that have followed Trevor Baptiste throughout his college career, he had never achieved perfection. That changed Sunday, as the three-time All-American and U.S. national team member went a perfect 22-for-22 in No. 4 Denver’s 17-8 victory over visiting Cleveland State.
Baptiste’s perfect performance was the second-best in NCAA Division I history. Sacred Heart’s Zach Smith went 25-for-25 against Hartford in 2007.
Baptiste has won at least 20 faceoffs in eight of the Pioneers’ last 13 games dating back to last season and 18 times overall during his career.
Denver’s attack benefitted from Baptiste’s brilliance. Sophomore Ethan Walker scored a first-half hat trick en route to four goals and two assists. Junior Austin French added two goals and three assists on 50-percent shooting.
Ohio State Survives
For the first three weeks of the season, No. 6 Ohio State proved it could win protecting a lead.
On Sunday, it showed a flair for the dramatic by overcoming a three-goal fourth quarter deficit, getting the game-tying score with 1.8 seconds left and then the game-winner in OT to earn a 12-11 victory at Jacksonville. Tre Leclaire scored all three of his goals during the rally — including both the game-tying and game-winning scores — as Ohio State pulled off the memorable comeback.
