Cornell and Hobart resumed the oldest rivalry in college lacrosse after a two-year hiatus Tuesday. The 13th-ranked Big Red rode separate five- and six-goal runs to a 15-12 victory over the 18th-ranked Statesmen at Schoellkopf Field.

Billy Coyle had four goals and an assist and Hugh Kelleher and CJ Kirst chipped in three goals and an assist each as the Cornell offense was humming over the final three quarters after being held scoreless over the first 15 minutes. Goalkeeper Chayse Ierlan kept the Big Red (3-0) in it, making seven first-half saves and 10 for the game.

Cornell led 15-7 midway through the fourth quarter before Hobart (2-1) rallied with five unanswered goals to finish. John Herlihy scored three of his team-high four goals during the run, which came too late.

The Big Red have won eight straight games dating back to 2020. They did not compete in 2021 after the Ivy League canceled the season. They host No. 5 Ohio State on Saturday.

The Cornell-Hobart series dates back to 1898.

DUKE SURVIVES ANOTHER SOCON SCARE

Nothing comes easy for Duke in 2022.

The 12th-ranked Blue Devils trailed unranked High Point 9-8 at halftime but got hot in the second half and prevailed on the road 18-14.

Duke (6-2) lost to High Point’s Southern Conference peer Jacksonville two Sundays ago and was coming off an overtime defeat against Penn on Long Island. Big games by attackman Sean Lulley and midfielder Nakeie Montgomery, however, buoyed the Blue Devils. The graduate students combined for 13 points. Lulley’s eight points (five goals, three assists) matched his career high. Montgomery scored a career-high five goals.

Asher Nolting led the Panthers (2-3) with three goals and five assists in the loss.

NOTABLE

• An eye-opening score out of Washington, D.C., where No. 3 Georgetown throttled Mount St. Mary’s 21-4. The Hoyas (4-0) shut out the Mount (3-3) for the first 27 minutes and built a 14-0 lead. Will Bowen spearheaded the impressive defensive effort with four of Georgetown’s 17 caused turnovers. Thirteen different players scored in the win.

• Josh Zawada keeps setting records and Michigan keeps winning. Zawada became the school’s all-time assists leader finishing with two goals and four assists in the 19th-ranked Wolverines’ 12-10 win at Marquette. Michigan (6-0) trailed 3-1 after the first quarter but scored seven second-quarter goals to take control of the game. Zawada’s 52 career assists moved him past Ian King (2014-17) among the Wolverines’ career leaders. He’s currently averaging more than seven points per game.

• Devon McClane scored four goals and added five assists to lead Brown to a 15-14 win over visiting Villanova. Brian Antonelli also scored a career-high five goals for the Bears (3-1), who nearly coughed up a seven-goal lead. They led 15-8 with less than two minutes left in the third quarter. The Wildcats (2-2) scored the last six goals, including all five in the fourth quarter. Brett Baskin converted on a man-up opportunity, depositing his sixth goal of the game with 27 seconds remaining to make it a one-goal game. Villanova faceoff man Justin Coppola won the ensuing faceoff but shot wide, as did J.P. Basile. The game ended on a Luke Keating turnover.
