After a wild last Tuesday filled of upsets, much of the chalk picks prevailed this week.

But for No. 2 Virginia, it wasn’t easy. The Cavaliers finished their game with High Point with three consecutive goals to break a tie at 15 and hang on for an 18-15 victory. Michael Kraus (five goals) and Matt Moore (five assists) each had seven points.

Leading 13-10 with just 2:34 left in the third quarter, UVA surrendered three straight goals to High Point. Devon Buckshot beat the buzzer by quickly picking up a ground ball and slinging a shot past Alex Rode, tying the score at 13.

The sides went back and forth to start the fourth quarter, and Buckshot again tied the score — this time at 15 — on an assist from Joel Scerbo.

Nearly six minutes went by without another score until Jeff Conner assisted Ian Laviano for the go-ahead strike. Jared Conners then assisted Kraus for a 17-15 lead, and Kraus added an insurance goal with 43 seconds remaining.

Virginia (3-1) won 25 of 35 faceoffs. Petey LaSalla went 18-for-27, and Justin Schwenk went 7-for-8. High Point falls to 1-4.

No. 19 Marist Rolls

Joe Tierney scored five goals and Jason Intermesoli scored four goals as Marist rolled past Hartford, 14-6.

The sides ended the first quarter tied at 3, and Marist built a 6-4 lead by halftime. But the Red Foxes scored the first seven goals of the second half, extending the lead to 13-4 when Jojo Pirreca assisted Tierney with 7:50 left in the game.

Marist (3-1) won 15 of 24 faceoffs and outshot Hartford 52-33.

Notable

  • Drexel picked up its first win of 2020 with a 24-12 drubbing of Robert Morris. Reid Bowering scored five goals, and Collin Mailman, Aidan Coll and Ryan Genord each recorded hat tricks.

  • Stony Brook outlasted Hofstra in a Long Island rivalry, 14-11. The Seawolves led 8-7 at halftime, but James Philbin tied the score at 8 early in the third quarter. Stony Brook (3-1) scored five of the next six goals.

  • Holy Cross survived a late three-goal run from Harvard to defeat the Crimson, 9-8, and improve to 4-1 — the program’s best start to a season since 1981.

  • UMass nearly stumbled against UMass Lowell, but the Minutemen prevailed for an 11-9 win. Kyle LaForge scored for Lowell with 8:00 remaining, cutting the deficit to 10-9, but Gabriel Procyk provided insurance not long after.
