UMBC will play even further into May.
The Retrievers, who needed a minor miracle to make the America East tournament and went on to win the conference’s automatic qualifier, defeated Marist 14-8 on Wednesday in the play-in game of the NCAA Division I men’s lacrosse tournament.
UMBC (7-8) trailed the host Red Foxes 6-4 in the second quarter before reeling off seven unanswered goals en route to its first NCAA tournament win since 2007. The Retrievers are playing in the tournament for the first time since 2009.
Attackmen Trevor Patschorke and Steven Zichelli led UMBC with three goals each.
Goalie Tommy Lingner, who lost the starting job after a loss to UMass Lowell dropped the Retrievers to 3-8 on April 20, made nine saves in relief of Jack Morton, who has started during this four-game winning streak. UMBC held Marist scoreless for more than 30 minutes spanning the second, third and fourth quarters.
“He was phenomenal,” Retrievers coach Ryan Moran said of Lingner on ESPN3. “Jack Morton had been doing a great job for us. Tommy came in and gave us a spark with some really timely saves. The kids fed off his energy.”
Whoever starts Sunday will have his hands full against top-seeded Penn State and its prolific, multi-faceted offense. UMBC travels to Happy Valley to meet the Nittany Lions at noon on ESPNU.
