The US Lacrosse Players of the Week recognize the most outstanding individual performances in high school boys’ lacrosse in each of the five regions — Northeast, Mid-Atlantic, South, Midwest and West — outlined in our high school coverage.

Players of the Week from the Northeast will be announced once play begins in the region.

MID-ATLANTIC

Jack Horrigan, McDonogh (Md.)

Horrigan produced a career-high six goals to help the Eagles pull away from highly regarded St. Mary’s of Annapolis for a 16-10 win on March 30. The attackman who has committed to Providence College helped McDonogh improve to 2-0 in the MIAA A Conference. Horrigan recorded his first goal as the Eagles jumped out to a 4-2 lead, and he added another before halftime to help them bolster the lead to 10-4. After St. Mary’s cut the gap to 10-6, he helped trigger a 5-2 run to put the game out of reach. Horrigan has 10 goals through two games.

SOUTH

Maddox Johnson, Ponte Vedra (Fla.)

The sophomore midfielder scored nine times to lead Ponte Vedra to a 15-6 win over previously unbeaten Episcopal School of Jacksonville last week. Johnson missed the team’s previous game due to contact tracing for COVID-19.

MIDWEST

Mason Margherio, East Grand Rapids (Mich.)

The goal that gave the Pioneers a 7-6 win over Detroit Central Catholic (Mich.) was remarkable. With the two Mitten State powers tied in overtime, there was a scrum for a loose ball around the 18-yard line toward the right side of the field. Somehow, Magherio managed to scoop up the loose ball, twist into the middle, bounce off a hit and send a picture-perfect game-winner just inside the left post as time expired. He also had a key goal earlier in the game back when the Pioneers trailed 4-1.

WEST

Owen Gaffney, Loyola Los Angeles (Calif.)

The senior midfielder scored six goals to lead the Cubs to a 14-5 win over Westlake last week in their opener. Gaffney, a Harvard commit, was the 2019 Los Angeles Player of the Year after scoring 50 goals and adding 26 assists as a sophomore.
