SPARKS, Md. — US Lacrosse today announced that U.S. men’s indoor team coach Regy Thorpe will speak to high school and youth boys’ lacrosse coaches at the 2019 US Lacrosse Convention (LaxCon), set for Jan. 11-13 in Philadelphia.
Thorpe, also the associate head women’s lacrosse coach at Syracuse under Gary Gait, will lead the U.S. in the 2019 FIL World Indoor Lacrosse Championship. Wednesday he named 32 players to the U.S. training team on the heels of the program’s Sept. 27-29 participation in the Lacrosse All Stars North American Invitational.
“I enjoyed hosting a box lacrosse session at the 2018 US Lacrosse Convention and am looking forward to doing so again,” Thorpe said. “There are so many skills in the box game that can carry over to the field game to help young players develop. Even for coaches that don’t necessarily coach a standing indoor team, learning how to teach box skills will help you get the most out of your players.”
Thorpe is a Syracuse graduate who was a captain and an All-American for the 1993 national championship team, and he went on to a successful professional playing career. Thorpe played for the Rochester Knighthawks from 1995 to 2010, serving as team captain while helping the team win NLL championships in 1997 and 2007. He joined the Rochester Rattlers for the inaugural season of Major League Lacrosse (MLL) in 2001 and played with the Rattlers through 2006, serving as a team captain.
In addition to serving as a captain for the 2007 U.S. team at the FIL World Championship, Thorpe has represented the country at the Heritage Cup and Bowhunter Cup over the years. He helped the U.S. defeat Canada to win the Heritage Cup in 2002 and beat the Iroquois Nationals to win the Bowhunter Cup in 2010.
Off the field, Thorpe has been active as a coach on multiple levels. Since 2010, he has coached with the Orange women’s team, helping Syracuse to reach the NCAA semifinal round six times, including two championship game appearances. As a head coach, he led the Hamilton Nationals to the MLL championship game in 2011 and the Six Nations Arrows of the Ontario Junior A league to the Minto Cup title in 2007. As an assistant coach, he helped the Rochester Rattlers win an MLL championship (2008) and the Six Nations Arrows win the Minto Cup (2014).
Thorpe and the U.S. indoor training team will conduct a training weekend Oct. 19-21 in Columbus, Ohio, and it will host a box clinic for boys and girls ages 8 to 18 as part of the weekend.
“We received great feedback on our increase of indoor lacrosse-related sessions at LaxCon last year, and we’re excited to have Coach Thorpe back as a speaker,” Kim Rogers, director of events at US Lacrosse, said.
The specific date and time of Thorpe’s session will be announced as the convention draws near.
LaxCon represents lacrosse’s largest educational event and trade show, drawing upwards of 7,000 each year to learn the game, network with others in the community, and then develop the sport locally upon returning home. Special hotel rates are available for all attendees who book accommodations before Dec. 17. Members of US Lacrosse save $40 or more on LaxCon registration.
