Alyssa Murray was a three-time first team All-American selection at Syracuse, becoming the first Orange player to finish with three 100-point seasons. This summer, she will be an alternate for the U.S. team in the Federation of International Lacrosse World Championship in Guildford, England and then will be on the active roster for the International World Games in Wroclaw, Poland. A quick Q&A with Murray.
How do you give back to lacrosse?
I work full time at a private school in Austin called St. Stephen’s Episcopal School and I am the girls director for Iron Horse Lacrosse Club. I’ve really enjoyed this transition from college lacrosse to youth and high school because I feel like I can introduce so many young players to the game and help players get better. The players down in Texas are relatively new to lacrosse and are really interested in the sport. They’re super eager to learn and get better which makes it much easier.
You are an alternate for the World Cup team and active member of the World Games roster. How would you describe that dynamic?
Being an alternate for the World Cup team definitely has its challenges. I want to constantly be playing because I truly love to play the game. However, I know that the decision on who to put on the official roster for the World Cup is an incredibly difficult job, especially with the group of attackers that was trying out. I’ve continued to build up my fitness and constantly be out on the field playing to prepare for England and Poland, so no matter what happens, I’m mentally and physically ready to go.
How excited are you to represent the United States at the World Games?
I’m very excited to play in the World Games. It is a true honor to be able to help be a part of a tournament that will hopefully open the door to getting lacrosse into the Olympics. Knowing that the World Games are immediately following the World Cup has helped me stay focused on my goals and work my butt off each day.
