SPARKS, Md. — Head coach Kelly Amonte Hiller has trimmed the training roster for the 2019 U.S. U19 women’s national team to 23 players following last weekend’s Spring Premiere in California.
From an initial pool of 110 players that participated in tryouts last summer, US Lacrosse took 34 players to Stanford University for a training weekend at Spring Premiere, a six-team women’s event featuring the U.S. senior and U19 teams, national teams from Japan and England, and college teams from Fresno State and Stanford.
The U19 team held practice sessions and scrimmages and competed in exhibition games against Japan, England and Stanford.
“I was really happy with the weekend,” Amonte Hiller said. “The team chemistry was incredible. Every single player was very focused, unselfish, just committed to what it takes to represent the U.S. program the way we want it represented.
“This was the toughest decision ever. We literally could have taken any kid on the roster. A lot of times it came down to the smallest thing – the versatility between offense and defense, if they could play mid if we needed them. I’m very proud of every player and how they performed. It’s unfortunate we can’t take them all.”
The U.S. has two more training camps scheduled before departing for the 2019 Federation of International Lacrosse (FIL) Women’s U19 World Championship, which will be held Aug. 1-10 in Peterborough, Canada. Following their respective college and high school seasons, the players will reconvene at the national team training center at US Lacrosse headquarters in Sparks, Md., the weekend of June 7-9, and then at Northwestern University from July 8-10.
Prior to the world championship, Amonte Hiller will narrow the final roster to the FIL-mandated limit of 18 players.
The United States has won four of the six previous FIL Women’s U19 championships held (1999, 2003, 2007, 2011) while Australia (1995) and Canada (2015) have each won once.
The U.S. women’s national team trains and plays using best-in-class products provided by Nike (apparel and footwear), Brine (equipment), STX (equipment), SISU Guard (mouthguards), The Pearl by Guardian (balls) and DJO (sports braces).
In addition to these partners, Greenfields and MedStar Sports Medicine are official sponsors of Team USA. Team training is also aided by products from Motive Pure, NormaTec Recovery and Athletic Republic.
