US Lacrosse Magazine announced Wednesday its 2021 Division III Men’s Preseason Positional Players of the Year, part of the magazine’s immersive coverage leading to the upcoming spring season.

Five players — an attackman, midfielder, defenseman, specialist and goalie — earned this distinction thanks to their performances during the 2020 season and our expectations for 2021.

Next Wednesday (Dec. 30), US Lacrosse Magazine will reveal its overall Division III Men’s Preseason Player of the Year.

Preseason Attackman of the Year
Mac Bredahl, Tufts

Bredahl has sky-high potential at Tufts, a program that consistently competes for national championships. He was on pace for nearly 150 points as a sophomore, so the NESCAC looks to have its next big star.

Preseason Midfielder of the Year
Ty Kostack, Cabrini

Technically, the Cavaliers are still the reigning NCAA champions. Kostack was a USILA honorable mention All-American during the last two full seasons, bringing ground balls, scoring and experience to the mix.

Preseason Defenseman of the Year
Brad Apgar, Salisbury

Apgar was a first-team All-American as a sophomore, so he returns with sky-high expectations. He has taken a big step forward, giving the 12-time NCAA champion Sea Gulls a true defensive building block.

Preseason Goalie of the Year
Walker Hare, RIT

A fifth-year senior who was a first-team All-American and the Liberty League’s top player, Hare has a 58.8 career save percentage and allows just 8.01 goals per game. RIT has won all but one conference title since 2010.

Preseason Specialist of the Year
Brett Malamphy, Salisbury

Malamphy’s 2019 season included USILA first-team All-American and Specialty Player of the Year honors, plus a nod as the Capital Athletic Conference Player of the Year. He won 76.8 percent of faceoffs during the shortened 2020 campaign. He’s back as the Sea Gulls chase their first national title since 2017.
