With James Madison ineligible for the Colonial Athletic Association championship, the league race is wide open. One of the remaining favorites, Hofstra, took a big first step towards staking its claim with a 16-11 victory at Delaware on Wednesday.

The Pride (7-5, 1-1 CAA) outscored the Blue Hens 7-1 in the final quarter to overcome a 10-9 Delaware lead entering the final frame.

Junior Taylor Mennella matched her career-high with four goals and Arianna Esposito and Kerry Walser each scored three times for the Pride. Shannon Boyle had four caused turnovers, four draw controls and two groundballs.

Lizzie Yurchak led Delaware (3-9, 0-2) with three goals.

Johns Hopkins Edges Towson in Overtime

There have been a number of near misses for Johns Hopkins this season, but the Blue Jays prevailed 11-10 over Charles Street rival Towson on Abbey Hurlbrink’s overtime tally on Wednesday night.

The Blue Jays had lost by either one or two goals to Navy, Michigan and Rutgers earlier this season, but rallied to force overtime on Shelby Harrison’s goal with just 1:06 in regulation and then Hurlbrink scored her second of the game.

Harrison led Johns Hopkins (7-6) with four goals and Kathleen Garvey made 10 saves. Blaire Pearre scored three times for Towson (4-7).

Notable

  • No. 16 Virginia got four goals from Kiki Shaw as the Cavaliers evened their record at 7-7 with a 23-5 win over VCU. Virginia won 25 of 31 draw controls, led by Aubrey Williams with 11.

  • In a rematch of last year’s Northeast Conference championship game, Mount St. Mary’s handled Wagner 15-4. Dani Donoghue had five goals and Christina Haspert had four goals and four assists.

  • After beginning the season 0-5, Furman has won three straight Southern Conference games to improve to 3-5. The Paladins beat Longwood 15-10, handing the Lancers their first conference loss of the season. Paige Herman had three goals and two assists and Megan Beal had three goals and 11 draw controls.

  • Kelly Horning had four caused turnovers in Fairfield’s 19-9 win over Quinnipiac, giving her a school record 111 for her career. Horning passed Kate Ritano’s previous school mark.
