In a Facebook Live interview before Saturday’s game at Maryland, Syracuse women’s lacrosse coach Gary Gait refuted a reporter who asked about the rivalry.

“Everybody calls it a rivalry, but I don’t think Maryland does, because they’ve won all those games,” Gait said. “Rivalries you build by beating up on each other. We’re trying to make it a rivalry.”

The top-ranked Terps kept it a one-sided series, defeating the fourth-ranked Orange 17-7 in a dominant showing in College Park. Led by Megan Whittle’s career-high seven goals, Maryland improved to 21-1 all-time against Syracuse. Goalie Megan Taylor also enjoyed the best game of her career, making 18 saves.

“Today was a really exciting game for the team,” Terps coach Cathy Reese said. “The offense and defense were clicking, and everyone was playing hard out there. Megan Whittle and Megan Taylor were both phenomenal for us. We had a couple missed plays and still have a lot to improve on, but overall this was a great win.”

Maryland (6-0) continued to flash its depth on offense, with freshman midfielder Kali Hartshorn adding four goals to go with six draw controls. The Terps led 11-4 at halftime. The Orange (7-1) closed to within 12-7 before Maryland ended on a five-goal run.

Florida Powers Past Stony Brook

No. 3 Florida went on a nine-goal run in the first half and cruised to a 22-14 victory Saturday over No. 5 Stony Brook in Gainesville. The Gators (5-1) had no trouble scoring on the NCAA’s third-ranked defense. The Seawolves (5-1) came in allowing just 6.4 goals per game. Florida senior attacker Mollie Stevens did the most damage with a career-high seven goals and 10 draw controls.

Princeton Off to Best Start Since 2008

Senior Olivia Hompe tallied her 200th career point in a five-point game to lead No. 8 Princeton to a 14-8 win over No. 11 Notre Dame. The Tigers (5-0) are off to their best start since the 2008 season, when they began the year 10-0. Hompe finished with four goals and an assist for Princeton, which led 7-4 at halftime and put the game out of reach with a four-goal run to open the second half. Notre Dame’s eight-game winning streak ended, as the Irish fell to 8-2.

Rutgers Upsets James Madison

Joanna Reilly recorded a hat trick, Amanda Turturro dished out five assists and Nicole Kopyta and Samantha Budd each had two scores to help Rutgers notch a 12-9 victory over No. 13 James Madison on Saturday afternoon in Harrisonburg, Va. The Scarlet Knights (4-3) trailed 7-6 early in the second half, but scored four straight and six of the final eight goals to pick up their first win over the Dukes since 2014. James Madison (5-3) dropped its second straight game despite a career-high four goals from Kristen Gaudian.

Louisville Earns First-Ever Win Over Duke

Louisville defeated Duke for the first time in series history, upsetting the No. 17 Blue Devils 11-8 at UofL Stadium on Saturday. Senior Hannah Koloski and sophomore Meghan Siverson led the Cardinals (7-2) with four goals each. Duke fell to 4-3 and now is 0-3 in the ACC. The Blue Devils’ 16-5 edge in draw controls largely were negated by 18 turnovers.

Good Golly Miss Molly

Molly Hendrick scored six goals, including a no-look beauty, as No. 2 North Carolina blasted Virginia 21-11 in Chapel Hill on Saturday. The Tar Heels (6-1) jumped out to a 5-0 lead in the first eight minutes. The Cavaliers (2-4) responded with a 6-2 run to pull within one at 7-6 before North Carolina took control for good. Hendrick’s behind-the-back goal punctuated a three-goal run, then the Tar Heels opened the second half with eight unanswered goals to put the game away.

“She works on that in practice and she’s got the green light to shoot it if she’s got the time and space, which she did,” Levy said of Hendrick’s highlight-reel goal. “We promote and teach creativity on the offensive end, so seeing something like that show up on a game day is really exciting. Hopefully it inspires the next generation of lacrosse players, who can see something like that and say, ‘Oh, I want to be like her.’ It was a great time, great place and we celebrated that.”

Look out for Wesleyan. Trailing by three at halftime, the Cardinals (3-0) rallied in the second half to upset the seventh-ranked Continentals (1-2) at the Carrier Dome in Syracuse, N.Y. Liana Mathias (two goals, two assists) scored the game-winning goal with 4:36 remaining. Wesleyan outshot Hamilton 13-4 in the second half to earn its first-ever win over the Continentals and its second victory this season over a nationally ranked team (Bates).
