Loyola’s hot streak was snapped.

After beating Penn State, Towson, Princeton and Virginia in consecutive games, followed by four Patriot League wins, the Greyhounds sprinted into the Top 10 of the Nike/US Lacrosse Division I Women’s Top 20, sitting the highest at No. 5 on March 26.

Entering this week just one spot lower, Loyola had its next chance to prove itself as a national contender against another Top 20 team in Syracuse.

But the ACC power came out on top in overtime in Baltimore, handing the Greyhounds their first loss since back-to-back losses to start the season in February.

Loyola now turns back to its conference slate, entering a four-game stretch that kicks off with Navy – the team that took the 2017 Patriot League crown from the three-time reigning champion and knocked the Greyhounds out of contention for the NCAA tournament for the first time in seven years.

While both teams are 4-0 in conference play, the No. 12 Midshipmen are currently riding a four-game winning streak, all against Patriot League foes. They have yet to snag a significant win this season – falling to the only two Top 20 teams they’ve face thus far (Boston College and Florida) – making the Loyola tilt its next chance to make a stronger case for the postseason before facing No. 11 Virginia next week.

Saturday’s matchup is likely a preview of the Patriot League championship game as Loyola and Navy have battled for the title each of the last three years. The Midshipmen dominated the Greyhounds 15-5 last season before their historical NCAA tournament run.

Like it is every year, this Loyola-Navy game will be another showdown as the only unbeatens left in the Patriot League. The Greyhounds have the edge offensively with the No. 5 scoring offense in Division I, while also sitting first in shot percentage, third in points per game and fourth in assists per game. The Midshipmen rank second in draw controls per game and fourth in shots per game.

• No. 14 USC at No. 20 Colorado

  After Stanford took the lead in the Pac-12 last week, Colorado and USC, the preseason favorites, are now battling it out for the second seed. In their first meeting on March 16, the Trojans topped the Buffs 8-7 in overtime. Colorado leads the Pac-12 in ground balls per game, while USC leads in caused turnovers per game. In Division I as a whole, the Buffs have two players in top five categories – Darby Kiernan at No. 4 in draw controls per game and Julia Lisella at No. 5 in save percentage.

• No. 18 Penn State at No. 11 Virginia

  Due to impending snow, the Penn State-Virginia tilt was one of several moved up a day, making for an exciting Friday night matchup in one of the weekend’s biggest non-conference games. The Cavaliers are coming off back-to-back losses to Boston College by three and Maryland by seven, but played close with each and are eyeing a rebound victory. The Nittany Lions are also looking for a significant win since falling to Princeton on March 19. They’ve won twice since, against Johns Hopkins in overtime and Ohio State by eight, but a win over Virginia would improve their postseason resume.

• No. 2 Boston College at No. 16 Duke

  The undefeated Eagles have everything going for them right now with the No. 1 scoring offense while also sitting third in shot percentage and fifth in points per game, the latter two categories much in part thanks to their star leader Sam Apuzzo, who ranks third in each category individually. Meanwhile, Duke is feeling hot after upsetting Syracuse 17-10. While young, the Blue Devils are finally putting the pieces together to succeed. They boast the No. 1 ranking in draw controls per game thanks to Olivia Jenner, who sits third individually with 8.82 per game.

• No. 17 Syracuse at No. 15 Virginia Tech

  Syracuse coach Gary Gait got the best birthday present with a thrilling 12-11 overtime upset victory over Loyola on the road Thursday. With an up-and-down season, and a devastating loss to unranked Duke last week, the Loyola win was exactly what the Orange needed as they continue their road trip to Virginia Tech on Saturday. Sitting 0-3 in the ACC, Syracuse needs a win to rise from the bottom of the conference. The Hokies are 3-1 in conference play with wins over Duke, Notre Dame and Louisville.
