Zach Goodrich, a defensive anchor in the midfield for the Boston Cannons in their run to their first Major League Lacrosse title since 2011, was named the Maverik Defensive Player of the Year on Saturday.
Goodrich didn't post the gaudy numbers one might expect from an award winner, but his impact went beyond the stat sheet. He did contribute nine ground balls and three caused turnovers in five games, but flexed his "blue-collar" mentality by taking on opposing attackmen and helping Boston top Denver in the title game 13-10.
Other MLL Award Winners
Coach of the Year: Sean Quirk
Rookie of the Year: Daniel Bucaro
Goalie of the Year: Sean Sconone
The third overall selection in the 2019 MLL Draft, Goodrich is from Stevensville, Md., and coaches at the Naval Academy Prep School in Rhode Island. That made his performance at Navy-Marine Corps Memorial Stadium in Annapolis, Md., during the 2020 season even more memorable.
