Women's Tewaaraton Stock Watch: Scane Train Reigns

Izzy Scane was back on the field last weekend. She’s also back on top of the women’s Tewaaraton Award Stock Watch.

After sitting out the Wildcats’ games against Vanderbilt and Youngstown State with a hamstring injury, Scane starred against Stony Brook. The Seawolves’ Ellie Masera, another member of this week’s top five, looked stellar while leading the offensive charge for her team.

Conference play is heating up, but just a handful of new players entered this week’s Stock Watch. Several players who have been on this list week after week –– from Florida’s Sarah Reznick to Boston College’s Jenn Medjid –– have continued to reach new heights throughout the season.

Here’s what the Tewaaraton Award Stock Watch looks like midway through March.

1. Izzy Scane, Northwestern, A

After spending 2022 out with an ACL tear and two games of 2023 out with a hamstring injury, Scane continued to impress against Stony Brook. She scored eight goals against the Seawolves, who rank No. 11 nationally in scoring defense, firmly shutting the door on any chance of an upset. The Michigan native has played in just five games but has managed 35 goals — an average of seven goals per game. Scane will headline the Wildcats’ NCAA semifinal rematch against North Carolina after sitting out the 2022 matchup, widely considered the best lacrosse game of the year.

2. Meaghan Tyrrell, Syracuse, A

Tyrrell has been a veteran playmaker and leader for the Orange this season. She’s gotten in on the scoring action over Syracuse’s past few games, tallying five goals against Virginia Tech and four against Notre Dame. Tyrrell’s total of 24 assists is second nationally, and she ranks third in assists per game, too. Expect big things from Tyrrell as the Orange ramp up conference play, with big matchups against Duke and Stony Brook on the horizon.

3. Belle Smith, Boston College, M

Strong on both ends of the field, Smith has been a key to the Eagles’ success. Smith anchored Boston College in its most recent win against Louisville, posting six goals, four ground balls and one draw control. The Long Island product has powered the Eagles’ fiery offense alongside Jenn Medjid, with the pair combining for 42 goals. Smith alone has tallied an impressive 20 goals, seven assists, 13 ground balls and six caused turnovers.

4. Ellie Masera, Stony Brook, M

Although the Seawolves struggled against Northwestern, Masera was especially impressive on attack. She tallied five goals — over half of Stony Brook’s total — and chipped in nine draw controls as well. Her efforts against the Wildcats brought her season totals to 21 goals and 32 draw controls. Keep an eye on Masera as the Seawolves take on Delaware on Saturday and Syracuse next Wednesday.

5. Jenn Medjid, Boston College, A

A veteran leader on attack, Medjid has anchored the Eagles’ offense alongside Smith. She leads Boston College with 22 goals and has added 10 assists, two ground balls and two caused turnovers as well. Medjid starred in the Eagles’ most recent matchups, notching a hat trick against Brown last Wednesday and five goals and four assists against Louisville — good for ACC Offensive Player of the Week honors.
