High School Girls' Regional Rankings: AHD Solidifies No. 1 Spot in South
Every Tuesday during the high school lacrosse season, USA Lacrosse updates Regional Top 10 and National Top 25 rankings to reflect the results of the previous week. Below are the Nike/USA Lacrosse High School Girls’ Regional Top 10 updates through games played May 7.
Darien (Conn.) continues to plow through its strong schedule to lead the Northeast Region. Just behind the Blue Wave is another unbeaten, Bayport-Blue Point (N.Y.). Wantagh (N.Y.) got by North Shore (N.Y.) in overtime and St. Anthony’s (N.Y.) knocked back New Canaan (Conn.) to assume Top 10 spots. New Canaan could rise again with a game against No. 3 Wilton (Conn.) this week. Teams are winding up their regular seasons which leaves still a little room for movement.
The Mid-Atlantic Region rankings figure to be impacted greatly by tournament play. The IAAM A Conference tournament continues with the top four teams in the region playing in the Maryland private school semifinals. No. 1-ranked and top-seeded McDonogh (Md.) is unbeaten in conference play. A huge win by Oak Knoll (N.J.) in its county tournament final vaulted the Royals into the rankings just ahead of their championship victim, Summit (N.J.).
The top five enjoyed perfect weeks in the South Region. American Heritage-Delray (Fla.) took the state title to finish a terrific season at the top of the region rankings. Behind the Stallions, Milton (Ga.), Cardinal Gibbons (N.C.), Hockaday (Texas) and Blessed Trinity (Ga.) are in the midst of trying to win their own championships. Bartram Trail (Fla.) also secured a title in the Sunshine State to move up while the remainder of the Top 10 looks the same.
Loyola Academy (Ill.) retains the top spot in the Midwest Region, and New Trier (Ill.) and Upper Arlington (Ohio) continue strong seasons just behind Loyola. Olentangy Liberty (Ohio) moves up a couple spots while New Albany (Ohio) drops based on its inconsistent results. Lakeville South (Minn.) is the only unbeaten in the Top 10 though it’s early in their season. Dublin Coffman (Ohio) and Hinsdale Central (Ill.) have turned it around since early losses to secure the final spots in the Top 10.
Torrey Pines (Calif.) is the lone newcomer to the West Region and it will try to live up to its top seeding in the playoffs. Both California and Colorado are set to open postseason play. The top two ranked teams – Colorado Academy (Colo.) and San Ramon Valley (Calif.) – are trying to complete unbeaten seasons.
