Manchester Valley Making Waves in Mid-Atlantic Girls' Top 10
Every Tuesday during the high school lacrosse season, USA Lacrosse updates Regional Top 10 and National Top 25 rankings to reflect the results of the previous week. Below are the Nike/USA Lacrosse High School Girls’ Regional Top 10 updates through games played May 21.
It’s nothing new at the top of the Northeast Region, with Darien (Conn.) and Bayport-Blue Point (N.Y.) leading the way as they put their perfect marks on the line in playoff showdowns in their respective states. Sacred Heart (Conn.) leapfrogs a couple teams after capturing the Prep Invitational title. Their move jumbles the middle of the rankings somewhat, but there are no new teams in the Top 10 this week. It’s proving time with the playoffs in full swing.
The top seven teams remained the same in the Mid-Atlantic Region rankings with only two of them still playing after Maryland’s IAAM conference wrapped its season. Archbishop Carroll (Pa.) and Owen J. Roberts (Pa.) overwhelmed their opponents to remain among the best in the region as they get into state playoffs. With Oak Knoll (N.J.) losing, No. 8 Summit (N.J.) climbs one spot, as does No. 9 Episcopal (Pa.) after finishing with a win. The upcoming playoffs will help sort New Jersey’s finest. The lone newcomer to the Top 10 is Manchester Valley, the only unbeaten public school team left in Maryland. They reached their class semifinals with a narrow victory and next go for their first state crown since 2016.
No. 4 Cardinal Gibbons (N.C.) retained the state championship and kept pace with the three state title winners ahead of it and the two behind it in the South Region. The region has wrapped up play for the spring season. Gibbons’ victory keeps the Top 10 solidly intact.
The top six teams kept their spots in the Midwest Region that is led by Loyola Academy (Ill.). There’s a new No. 7 team as Sacred Heart Academy (Ky.) captured a state championship after avenging last year’s title loss. The Valkyries were unranked coming into their playoff run, and they are the only team new in a region that now sees its states opening tournament play.
Colorado Academy (Colo.) kept pace with San Ramon Valley (Calif.) and kept the top spot as the newest state champion in the West Region. St. Ignatius Prep (Calif.) and Foothill-Santa Ana (Calif.) also won section crowns. Regis Jesuit fell in the final to Colorado Academy (Colo.) but entered the rankings at No. 5 on the strength of its march to the title game. Most of the West Region has wrapped up play for the spring but Grant (Ore.) returns to the Top 10 as it moves into the state semifinals.
