Northeast Sees Most Change in Girls' Regional Top 10 Update

Every Tuesday during the high school lacrosse season, USA Lacrosse updates Regional Top 10 and National Top 25 rankings to reflect the results of the previous week. Below are the USA Lacrosse High School Girls’ Regional Top 10 updates through games played March 31.

With Bayport-Blue Point (N.Y.) losing, the next four teams all moved up one spot each in the Northeast Region. Connecticut teams don’t start until this week, and then they’ll have a chance to prove themselves. Garden City (N.Y.) certainly did with its win over BBP, one of their handful of narrow wins this year. Private schools Hotchkiss (Conn.) and Noble & Greenough (Mass.) are new to the rankings after key wins for each.

The Mid-Atlantic Region had a quiet week with some teams on spring break, but there was one impactful top-10 matchup. St. Paul’s (Md.) asserted its strength with a 14-4 win over Glenelg Country (Md.). Georgetown Visitation (D.C.) takes Glenelg’s spot and moved back into the top 10 based on their competitive two-goal loss to No. 2 McDonogh. With New Jersey teams swinging into action and several top-10 matchups on the docket, there is a lot to look forward to this week.

The South Region saw all 10 teams remain in place, led by American Heritage-Delray (Fla.). IMG Academy (Fla.) goes out of region this week for a tough matchup against Top 25 opponent Maryvale (Md.). Milton (Ga.) will also test itself out of region against Paul VI (Va.). Several South teams are heading into the tail end of the regular season already.

There were also no changes to the Midwest Region rankings. Upper Arlington (Ohio) continues to impress at the top, and they will get a test from No. 3 New Trier (Ill.) this week. No. 2 Loyola Academy (Ill.) faces a gauntlet of East Coast teams. Kentucky Country Day (Ky.), Carmel (Ind) and Guerin Catholic (Ind.) keep piling up wins to stay within striking range if any of the top teams falter.

The West Region’s top three teams are a combined 23-0. Colorado Academy (Colo.), San Ramon Valley (Calif.) and Sacred Heart Prep (Calif.) are riding fast starts into a week in which they will see some strong competition. Similarly to the Northeast, a cascade effect has newcomers Fairview (Colo.) and Kent Denver (Colo.) in the rankings now. Fairview (Colo.) owns a win over Kent Denver, which upended No. 10 Torrey Pines (Calif.).

NORTHEAST

1. St. Anthony’s (N.Y.), 2-0

Tess Calabria had four goals and one assist, Jenna Binkis netted a hat trick, Meg Kenny had two goals and two assists and Lexi Zenk made 11 saves in a 12-6 win over Wantagh (N.Y.) for the Friars, who also dispatched Kellenberg (N.Y.) 16-3. Previous: 2

2. New Canaan (Conn.), 0-0

The road to another (possible) state championship for a New Canaan team that will be led by Devon Russell, Lexi Tully and Ceci Patterson begins literally on the road – with an opener against Rye (N.Y.) on April 3. Previous: 3

3. Darien (Conn.), 0-0

It’s an intriguing year for Darien, coming off their most successful season in school history. Hope Schoudel, Sadie Stafford, Maggie Bellisimo and the rest of the Blue Wave open their season April 7 against St. Paul’s (Md.). Previous: 4

4. Victor (N.Y.), 1-0

Allie Pisano and Devin Livingston had four goals and one assist apiece, Julia Bruno had three goals and one assist and Maia Pronti had four assists in a 14-6 season-opening win over Penfield (N.Y.). Previous: 5

5. Garden City (N.Y.), 3-0

The Trojans’ three wins to open the season have been by a combined four goals. That includes a 7-6 victory over former No. 1 Bayport-Blue Point (N.Y.) and a 9-7 victory at Ward Melville (N.Y.). Kyle Finnell had three goals, Maureen Arendt and Ashley Clark scored two goals apiece and Kendal Morris added a goal and an assist in the win over the Patriots. Previous: 7

6. Wilton (Conn.), 0-0

There’s high expectations this year for Wilton, led by Addison Pattillo, Ashleigh Masterson, Josie Goldman and Morgan Breakey. The Warriors open their season against Brien McMahon (Conn.) on April 2. Previous: 6

7. Hotchkiss School (Conn.), 2-0

Charlotte Dorman (William & Mary) had three goals, Avery Doran (Brown) had two goals and two assists, Etta Coburn (UMass) had one goal and two assists and Zoe Froimovitz (Saint Lawrence) made 11 saves in a 9-7 win over Noble & Greenough (Mass.). Previous: NR

8. Bayport-Blue Point (N.Y.), 2-1

The Phantoms’ 22-game winning streak was snapped by Garden City (N.Y.), which defeated Bayport-Blue Point 7-6. Kailey Bruckner and Aubrie Eisfeld scored two goals apiece and Julia Fusco and Ava Meyn added a goal each. Previous: 1

9. Noble & Greenough (Mass.), 1-1

Notre Dame commit Hadley Laughlin, Duke-bound Maddie MacDonald and Harvard commit Tori Balser scored two goals apiece to highlight the offense, and MacDonald also had five draw controls and Basler had four in a 9-7 loss at Hotchkiss (Conn.) March 30. They had opened the year with an 11-9 win over Sacred Heart Greenwich (Conn.). Previous: NR

10. Fairport (N.Y.), 1-0

Lily Kondas scored five goals, Katie Mallaber struck for three goals and Ella Peers and Camryn DuBose had one goal and one assist apiece for the Red Raiders in an 11-7 win over Brighton (N.Y.). Previous: 9

MID-ATLANTIC

1. Episcopal (Pa.), 8-0

The Churchwomen swept St. Stephen’s & St. Agnes (Va.) and at St. John’s College (D.C.) in the week. Episcopal won a tight 6-4 game over SSSA behind two goals apiece from Avery Le, Quinn Whitaker and Maura Irish. Sydney Richter won three draws and Caitlin McCarthy caused three turnovers and had three ground balls. In 11-5 win over St. John’s, Richter had seven draw controls and Kate Dente and Whitaker scored hat tricks. Le and Rich had two goals apiece and Rish also had three draws while Le picked up three ground balls. Paige McMeekin dished out a pair of assists. Manheim Township (Pa.), Academy of Notre Dame (Pa.) and Summit (N.J.) are part of a busy week. Previous: 1

2. McDonogh (Md.), 4-1

The Eagles got back on track with a 17-7 win over Bryn Mawr (Md.) on March 27. McDonogh has been particularly strong on defense, limiting opponents to 6.2 goals per game this season. They play at an improved John Carroll (Md.) on April 3 and host St. Mary’s Annapolis (Md.) on April 5. Previous: 2

3. St. Anne’s-Belfield (Va.), 8-0

St. Anne’s-Belfield played only one game this week and came away with a 17-3 win over St. Catherine’s (Va.). The Saints face a tougher week with a showdown against Archbishop Spalding (Md.) on April 2 and April 6 games against Potomac School (Va.) and Good Counsel (Md.) at St. Stephen’s & St. Agnes (Va.). 4. Stone Ridge (Md.), 5-1

The Gators did not play this week, but face a good week ahead. They host one of the best in the West Region, St. Ignatius Prep (Calif.), then take on Good Counsel (Md.) and Paul VI (Va.) on April 6 at SSSA. Previous: 4

5. Archbishop Spalding (Md.), 5-0

The Cavaliers defeated St. Mary’s Annapolis (Md.) 10-6 on March 27 in their lone game of the week to remain unbeaten. Spalding trailed at halftime before rallying behind Gabby Greene, who finished with four goals and an assist. She was a perfect 4-for-4 on shots. Ella Jane Ostrowski scored twice and Ella Davis made eight saves. The schedule ramps up with a battle of unbeatens at St. Anne’s-Belfield on April 2. They return then to host Severn (Md.) on April 5. 6. Good Counsel (Md.), 7-0

The Falcons did not play last week, but have a big week ahead capped by a doubleheader April 6 at SSSA vs. Stone Ridge and St. Anne’s-Belfield. They start the week with game at Bishop McNamara (Md.) and at Elizabeth Seton (Md.). Previous: 6

7. St. Paul's (Md.), 6-1

The Gators rolled by Glenelg Country Day (Md.) 14-4 on March 25 and dispatched of Roland Park (Md.) on March 27. Susan Radebaugh made 17 saves over the two games. The Gators have three road games this week, at Notre Dame (Md.), Bryn Mawr (Md.) and Darien (Conn.). Previous: 7

8. Agnes Irwin (Pa.), 1-1

The Owls did not play last week. They come off a long break with a game April 3 against Springside Chestnut Hill (Pa.). They also face Penn Charter (Pa.) on April 5. Previous: 8

9. Summit (N.J.), 0-0

Summit and the state of New Jersey are set to finally open. Summit begins April 4 against Immaculate Heart (N.J.). Last year's leading scorer Lily Spinner (Yale) and third-leading scorer Jane Freeman (Hopkins) and defender Cece Webb (UVa) graduated, but the Hilltoppers still have plenty back with the likes of Lauren and Kate Riley (both Dartmouth) and Anya Wardle (Richmond). 10. Georgetown Visitation (Md.), 2-2

The Cubs haven’t played since dominating Bullis (Md.) 19-4 back on March 21, but they move up based on a pair of early season losses to Good Counsel (Md.) and McDonogh (Md.) that were more competitive than other teams’ losses to top-10 teams. They face out-of-state foes this week with Sacred Heart (N.Y.) and Midwest Region No. 2 Loyola Academy (Ill.). Previous: NR

SOUTH

1. American Heritage-Delray (Fla.), 12-1

The Stallions responded to their first loss of the year by defeating Penn Charter (Pa.) 19-13. AHD has three games this week to close out the regular season, including against 12-1 Benjamin (Fla.) and 13-2 Hagerty (Fla.). Previous: 1

2. Anderson (Texas), 7-0

The Trojans continue to use balanced scoring throughout their lineup to maintain their undefeated season. Anderson defeated Westlake (Texas) 15-4 as Chloe Page led all scorers with seven points while High Point commit Harper Jones had a team-leading five goals. Anderson already has five players with over 20 points. Previous: 2

3. Plant (Fla.), 15-0

The Panthers are one game away from clinching an undefeated regular season after defeating Newsome (Fla.) 16-3. Mckenzey Craig had a team-leading seven points while Katie Fisher had a game-high four goals. Plant’s regular season finale is this week against Community School of Naples (Fla.). Previous: 3

4. Cardinal Gibbons (N.C.), 5-4

The Crusaders improved to 5-4 after an impressive 12-7 win over Springfield-Delco (Pa.). Louisville recruit Charlotte Jackson had a hat trick while junior Hayden Miller had two goals and two assists. Previous: 5

5. Milton (Ga.), 10-2

The Eagles broke their two-game losing stream by defeating Pope (Ga.) 17-4. Milton next faces Paul VI (Va.) on April 6. Previous: 5

6. Bartram Trail (Fla.), 9-4

The Bears lost to Colorado Academy (Colo.) 17-7 despite Ryann Frechette’s five-goal performance. After Bartram Trail won in a forfeit over Creekside (Fla.), the Bears blanked Buchholz (Fla.) 20-0. Junior Emily Barnette had five goals. Previous: 6

7. IMG Academy (Fla.), 11-2

Despite Taylor Santos’ four-goal, two-assist performance, the Ascenders fell to Conestoga (Pa.), 10-9. IMG responded with a 20-7 win over Thomas Worthington (Ohio). IMG has another tough test this week facing Maryvale (Md.). Previous: 7

8. Cambridge (Ga.), 11-3

The Bears picked up an 11-6 win over Mill Creek (Ga.) heading into their bye week. Cambridge has a week off before facing Harrison (Ga.) on April 10. Previous: 8

9. Hockaday (Texas), 6-4

The Daisies returned to in-state competition last week by downing Flower Mound (Texas) 18-5. Hockaday tacked on a 20-10 win over Keller (Texas) one day later. Hockaday has a tough in-state challenge this week against undefeated Frisco (Texas). Previous: 9

10. Bishop England (S.C.), 11-0

The Bishops garnered a pair of interstate wins amid a couple of Bishop England’s toughest tests on the schedule. Bishop England defeated Medina (Ohio) 11-2, and then defeated Connelly School of the Holy Child (Md.) 14-8. Nini Clarke and Henley Bredemann had hat tricks in both contests. Previous: 10

MIDWEST

1. Upper Arlington (Ohio), 3-0

After a week off, the Golden Bears make their return April 2 against Olentangy Orange (Ohio) before a big-time April 6 showdown against one of the best in the Midwest: New Trier (Ill.). The last time Upper Arlington played, it won a pair of one-goal thrillers against Hill Academy (Ont.) and Loyola Academy (Ill.). Previous: 1

2. Loyola Academy (Ill.), 4-1

The Ramblers had the week off following the pair of thrillers they played in Upper Arlington (edging Hill Academy in overtime and falling to the host Golden Bears). They have another loaded week ahead with four games in four days against Paul VI (Va.), Georgetown Visitation (D.C.), Potomac School (Va.) and St. John’s College (D.C.), all top-tier teams in the Mid-Atlantic Region. Previous: 2

3. New Trier (Ill.), 2-2

The Trevians have been off even longer than the Golden Bears and the Ramblers. New Trier will play its first game since March 19 when it hosts Glenbrook North (Ill.) on April 3, before venturing to the Buckeye State for games against Thomas Worthington and Upper Arlington. Previous: 3

4. Olentangy Liberty (Ohio), 3-2

The Patriots finished their Sunshine State trip with a 1-2 record, bouncing back from losses to IMG and Plant (both among the top teams in the South Region) with a 17-7 victory over Oakton (Va.). Madeline Pohmer (6 goals), Isabelle Pohmer (2 goals, 5 assists) and Corinna Hilmas (5 goals, 1 assist) all had massive performances in the Patriots’ win over the Cougars. Previous: 4

5. New Albany (Ohio), 2-0

The Eagles return from an extended break with a big in-state matchup April 6 against Hudson, which also boasts a 2-0 record after a couple of solid wins against strong Northeast Ohio opponents. The Eagles topped the Explorers, 13-8, last year with both teams eventually making deep tournament runs. Previous: 5

6. Kentucky Country Day (Ky.), 14-0

While the Bearcats won their three games this week by a combined 50-10 margin, their 11-6 victory at Eastern (Ky.) was certainly competitive. KCD won with balance as junior Leighton Spears, sophomore Ellie Beam and freshman Zaylee Madison all tallied hat tricks. That Eastern win marked the third straight game in which Beam tallied at least three goals and three assists, while Spears ended the week with a hat trick in three straight games. Previous: 6

7. Carmel (Ind.), 8-0

The Greyhounds stayed undefeated by the slimmest of margins, edging Hamilton Southeastern (Ind.), 10-9. Junior Sophie Mock came up clutch for Carmel, scoring four of her seven goals in the fourth quarter to top the Royals. Breckin Hare had a couple of assists after scoring five goals against Heritage Christian earlier in the week. After a two-week break, the Greyhounds hit the road for three straight, including a marquee showdown against Hinsdale Central (Ill.). Previous: 7

8. Guerin Catholic (Ind.), 9-1

The Golden Eagles made it four straight wins with an 18-10 victory at Zionsville (Ind.). Following a three-week break, Guerin Catholic picks back up with a four-game road trip, starting with two big challenges in Hamilton Southeastern (April 18) and Land of Lincoln power Loyola Academy (April 20). Previous: 8

9. Benilde-St. Margaret's (Minn.), 0-0

The Red Knights’ opener is coming up at long last, as they debut April 11 at Woodbury (Minn.). Once BSM gets going, the tests come fast with a pair of three-game weeks, including a fun April 18 tilt against The Blake School (Minn.). The Red Knights beat the Bears, 14-6, in a Section 5 semifinal last season. Previous: 9

10. Lake Forest (Ill.), 2-0

After more than two full weeks off, the Scouts start a stretch of five games in nine days against Glenbrook South (April 4) and Oak Park-River Forest (April 6). The latter has won its first two games by a combined score of 34-9 although Lake Forest won last year’s game against OPRF by a double-digit margin. Previous: 10

WEST

1. Colorado Academy (Colo.), 6-0

Colorado Academy stays steady at No. 1 after defeating previously-ranked South region No. 6 Bartram Trail (Fla.) 17-7. Senior attack Zoe Martin (Michigan) registered six goals and three assists against Bartram. The Mustangs battle Cherry Creek (Colo.) next. Previous: 1

2. San Ramon Valley (Calif.), 9-0

The Wolves continued their hot streak with two more wins against league opponents, defeating Dougherty Valley (Calif.) 18-1 and California (Calif.) 11-3. Next week San Ramon takes on No. 5 Torrey Pines in one of many West Region top 10 matchups. Previous: 2

3. Sacred Heart Prep (Calif.), 8-0

Sacred Heart remains undefeated on the season after picking up two wins last week. The Gators defeated Redwood (Calif.) 16-9 and Archbishop Mitty 15-1. Sophomore middie Olivia Abbott registered six goals, two assists and 20 draw controls across both games. Two top 10 matches ahead for Sacred Heart, No. 5 Torrey Pines (Calif.) and No. 4 Oak Ridge (Calif.). Previous: 3

4. Oak Ridge (Calif.), 7-1

Oak Ridge defeated Coronado (Calif.) 14-12 on the road. Senior attack/middie Ella Rutherford (Alabama Huntsville) netted four goals and one draw controls while junior attack/middie Annika Tanner (Louisville) matched Rutherford’s goals and had three draw possessions. The Trojans have three fierce battles ahead: Whitney (Calif.), Rocklin (Calif.) and No. 3 Sacred Heart Prep (Calif.). Previous: 4

5. St. Ignatius Prep (Calif.), 7-2

Led by sophomore attack Kaija Walcott, who had five goals and an assist, St. Ignatius defeated Menlo School (Calif.) 18-6. Junior middie KK O’Keefe added four goals and an assist while senior middie Eleri Colon (John Hopkins) registered two goals, two assists and six draw controls. The Wildcats have a trio of games up next in Maryland: Liberty, Stone Ridge School and Glenelg High. Previous: 6

6. Foothill-Santa Ana (Calif.), 9-1

The Knights added their ninth win so far this season after they defeated Edison (Calif.) 14-8. Up next is Redondo Union (Calif.) on April 4. Previous: 7

7. Fairview (Colo.), 2-1

The Knights were off last week, but already have played two tough teams and performed well led by a solid group of upperclassmen. They defeated Kent Denver (Colo.) 9-8 on March 21 in their last game. They had been beaten by No. 1 ranked Colorado Academy (Colo.) in their second game of the season. Finnley Dancy (Army) and Sierra Ryan (Arizona State) are seniors while the junior class features Gabriella McCollester (Northwestern) and Tessa McCollester (Army) along with Lucy Michaels (Salisbury). 8. Kent Denver (Colo.), 4-1

The Sun Devils swept a pair of California teams last week. They edged Cathedral Catholic (Calif.) 10-9, then dispatched of Torrey Pines (Calif.) 12-8. Only Fairview has beaten Kent Denver this year, and it was a one-goal game. The Sun Devils are led by seniors Dylan Agron (Cornell), Bricin Mahoney (Northwestern), Claire Murphy (Brown) and Lila Whittemyer (Columbia). Previous: NR

9. Valor Christian (Colo.), 2-3

Valor Christian picked up its second victory this spring in a 17-10 win over Cherry Creek (Colo.). Senior middie Eliza Osburn (North Carolina) scored three goals and one assist. The Eagles battle Air Academy (Colo.) next week. Previous: 8

10. Torrey Pines (Calif.), 7-2

Kent Denver (Colo.) handed Torrey Pines its second loss of the season, defeating the Falcons 12-8. They hit the road for three tough contests, including two top five teams, against Carondelet (Calif.), No. 3 Sacred Heart Prep (Calif.) and No. 2 San Ramon Valley (Calif.). Previous: 5
