USA Lacrosse High School Girls' Players of the Week

The USA Lacrosse Players of the Week recognize the most outstanding individual performances in high school girls’ lacrosse in each of the five regions — Northeast, Mid-Atlantic, South, Midwest and West — outlined in our high school coverage. Games are considered from the previous Monday through Sunday.

NORTHEAST

Ryan Reynolds, Cold Spring Harbor (N.Y.)

It would be wise not to try and pigeonhole Ryan Reynolds when it comes to what she does well on a lacrosse field. That’s because the real answer is everything. That was proven in Cold Spring Harbor’s season-opening 15-4 victory over Farmingdale (N.Y.) where the Maryland-bound junior scored one goal, had three assists, caused three turnovers and won six draw controls.

“Ryan is an extremely well-rounded and well-balanced player. She can do it all and proved that during our first non-league game of the season,” Cold Spring Harbor coach Danielle Castellane said. “Whether it’s a draw win, a caused turnover or an assist to a teammate, she finds ways to dominate in every zone. She’s only getting started. We expect this to be a big year for her and I’m excited to see what’s to come.”

MID-ATLANTIC

Taylor Fique, Manchester Valley (Md.)

Fique didn’t take long to make an impact in high school. The freshman had eight goals and three assists in a win over Winters Mill (Md.), then had some big moments to help Manchester Valley win the 4 Causes 4 Champions title. She had a hat trick in the opener as the Mavericks beat defending 4A state champion Broadneck (Md.) 12-6. Then, in the title game against defending 1A state champion Liberty, she had four points on two goals and two assists. Her final goal came with six seconds left for a 10-9 win, then she secured the final draw control so Liberty didn’t get another chance to score. That was her 10th draw control of the game.

For the week, Fique posted 13 goals, five assists, 14 draw controls and five caused turnovers. She stood out in the tournament held for a great purpose. Each defending champion plays for a cause. Manchester Valley and defending 3A champion Towson were playing for Morgan’s Message, host Liberty was playing for Zaching for Cancer, and Broadneck was playing for Morgan’s Message and One Love.

SOUTH

Ella Strong, Cardinal Newman (Fla.)

Cardinal Newman's Ella Strong has established herself as one of the nation's top scorers. The sophomore midfielder has notched a hat trick in all 13 games she has  played this year. Last week, she posted eight goals against St. John Paul II Academy (Fla.). She followed that with a seven-goal, one-assist effort against St. Edward's. She has also proven herself throughout the field by winning ground balls and draw controls.

MIDWEST

Isabelle Pohmer, Olentangy Liberty (Ohio)

The senior showed up big-time on the Patriots’ trip to the Sunshine State, racking up five-plus points (18 in total) against IMG Academy (Fla.), Plant (Fla.) and Oakton (Va.). Pohmer proved an elite scorer with five goals against the Panthers. A day later, she proved just as strong a passer with five assists (to go with two goals) against the Cougars.

WEST

Ella Rutherford, Oak Ridge (Calif.)

In Oak Ridge’s close 14-12 win over Coronado (Calif.), senior attack/middie Rutherford (Alabama Huntsville) netted four goals and had one draw control. Across their last three games, including a top five matchup, Rutherford has registered 10 goals and two assists.
