USA Lacrosse High School Girls' Players of the Week

The USA Lacrosse Players of the Week recognize the most outstanding individual performances in high school girls’ lacrosse in each of the five regions — Northeast, Mid-Atlantic, South, Midwest and West — outlined in our high school coverage.

NORTHEAST

Ellie Burdick, Greenwich Academy (Conn.)

Greenwich Academy (Conn.) is off to a strong start to the 2023 season, winning both of their games at the Spring Fling tournament at St. Stephen’s & St. Agnes School (Va.), defeating Loyola Academy (Ill.), 14-13 in overtime and defeating Georgetown Visitation (D.C.), 11-8. Ellie Burdick, a senior midfielder, played a pivotal role in both victories, impacting the games on multiple levels. Against Loyola, the Dartmouth commit had two goals, including the OT winner, and two assists, while also collecting a team-high 11 draw controls, one ground ball and caused one turnover.

“Ellie is one of the most complete players, end to end, I’ve ever coached and to see her do everything in her power to earn the pair of wins this weekend was awesome,” Greenwich Academy coach Hailey Griggs said. “I thought her play on the draw circle changed the game against Loyola Academy, giving us an opportunity to claw our way back into the game. When we needed to put the game away, she found the back of the net in overtime.”

Against Georgetown Visitation, Burdick had three goals, including the eventual champion, and an assist. She also collected four draws, one ground ball and caused one turnover. “Against Georgetown Visitation, she played a key role in our team’s ability to once again gain possession — both on the draw and the defensive end,” Griggs said. “Offensively, she led the way for us again. It’s just really nice to see her having such a strong start to her senior season after an injury kept her sidelined and limited for most of last season. She’s the definition of a leader, on and off the field.”

MID-ATLANTIC

Mairyn Dwyer, Agnes Irwin (Pa.)

The sophomore midfielder scored four goals and had two assists, five ground balls, and four draw controls in the Owls’ 9-8 win over Archbishop Carroll (Pa.). The win snapped the Patriots’ 33-game winning streak. They were unbeaten last season on their way to the Class 2A state title. Dwyer, a three-sport athlete, is poised for a breakout season after amassing 14 goals, two assists, 14 ground balls and 10 draw controls for last year’s senior-heavy Agnes Irwin team.

SOUTH

Emily Simkin, Milton (Ga.)

Emily Simkin had a standout week as Milton faced its toughest competition of the season. Last week, the senior attacker had 10 goals and 10 assists against Lambert (Ga.), Connelly School of the Holy Child (Md.), Stone Ridge (Md.) and Paul VI (Va.). Simkin, a senior, is committed to James Madison.

MIDWEST

Audrey Rudolph, New Trier (Ill.)

As the Trevians battled their way through the Washington D.C. area, Rudolph was a "consistent contributor and made an impact all over the field," per coach Peter Collins. That included three goals, five draw controls and two caused turnovers in New Trier's overtime loss to Georgetown Visitation on March 27. Rudolph is now shooting 81 percent on the season and leads the Trevians in ground balls.

WEST

Mia Marchetti, Foothill-Santa Ana (Calif.)

The senior midfielder was dominant in two big games last week, registering four goals and two assists in an 18-6 victory over Mater Dei (Calif.) and winning 17 draw controls in 20 attempts. She also had four goals and an assist and won 10 of 12 draws in a 16-6 win over two-loss St. Margaret’s (Calif.). She has 19 goals and 10 assists in 11 games this season.
