West Sees Most Change in USA Lacrosse High School Girls' Regional Top 10 Ranks

Every Tuesday during the high school lacrosse season, USA Lacrosse updates Regional Top 10 and National Top 25 rankings to reflect the results of the previous week. Below are the USA Lacrosse High School Girls’ Regional Top 10 updates through games played April 28.

A rarity at the top and two new teams highlight this week’s Northeast Region. New Canaan (Conn.) and Darien (Conn.) did no favors in sorting out the rankings when they played to an almost unheard of tie. They will hold their spots at 2 and 3 for this week. Bayport-Blue Point (N.Y.) handed Rocky Point (N.Y.) their first loss of the year to shoot up to No. 8, while Wilton (Conn.) has rebounded strongly from its only loss of the year to return to the rankings.

The Mid-Atlantic Region has just a pair of changes, and they come from impactful losses to teams that are good but not in the top 10 at the moment. Losses at this critical point in the year carry a bit more weight, thus Stone Ridge (Md.) finds itself ranked behind a St. Paul’s (Md.) team that it beat early in the season because Stone Ridge lost a game last week to unranked Georgetown Visitation (D.C.). Similarly, Summit (N.J.) suffered a pair of losses to open the door to fellow Garden State school Morristown (N.J.) to take a spot. Summit lost to a St. Anthony’s (N.Y.) team ranked No. 1 in the country, which had almost no rankings impact, but their other came against Oak Knoll (N.J.), a very good program that already had an in-state loss to Morristown.

Congratulations to our first state champion, which comes in the South Region. Bishop England (S.C.) won another state title to conclude an unbeaten season. Plant (Fla.) is the only other top-10 team sporting a perfect record that could win a state title, but the rest of the ranked squads carry championship aspirations in Florida, Georgia, North Carolina and Texas. Most have been absolutely dominant in the opening stages of playoffs.

The Midwest Region rankings has one small change. New Trier (Ill.), which had suffered several early losses, has found its stride. After returning to the rankings last week, they jumped ahead of Hinsdale Central (Ill.) thanks to a dominant defensive performance in their head-to-head matchup. The rest of the region continues to pile up wins ahead of an upcoming week highlighted by another top-10 showdown between Upper Arlington (Ohio) and Guerin Catholic (Ind.).

Colorado Academy (Colo.) was tested but prevailed to retain the top spot in the West Region. Oak Ridge (Colo.) made it 1-2 for the state when it topped St. Ignatius Prep (Calif.) to move up to No. 2. ThunderRidge (Colo.) also remained red hot and moved up to No. 7 after a top-10 win over Fairview (Colo.).

NORTHEAST

1. St. Anthony’s (N.Y.), 12-0

In a meeting of nationally-ranked teams, St. Anthony’s (N.Y.) proved why it’s the top-ranked team in the nation, defeating Summit (N.J.), 9-2, as part of the annual Gains for Brains tournament at Cold Spring Harbor. Tess Calabria led the way with six goals and one assist and Brooke Long added one goal and four assists. Previous: 1

2. New Canaan (Conn.), 7-1-1

After playing Darien (Conn.) to a rare 5-5 tie following double overtime, New Canaan (Conn.) defeated Ward Melville (N.Y.), 10-4, as part of the annual Gains for Brains tournament at Cold Spring Harbor. Madeline Tully and Emma Row scored three goals apiece and Lexie Tully added a pair of goals to lead the Rams. Previous: 2

Annabell Adams had three goals, Anna Von Kennel had two goals and two assists and Sadie Stafford and Kelly Holmes each had two goals and an assist in a 13-2 win over Manhasset (N.Y.). Previous: 3

4. Garden City (N.Y.), 11-1

Kyle Finnell had five goals and two assists, Tori Ottomanelli scored four goals, Maureen Arendt added a pair of goals and Averie Smith had one goal and one assist in an 11-8 win over Oak Knoll (N.J.). Previous: 4

5. Hotchkiss School (Conn.), 8-0

The Bearcats remain undefeated after a 16-7 victory over Taft (Conn.). Berkshire (Mass.) and Deerfield (Mass.) come to Hotchkiss School this week. Previous: 5

6. Noble & Greenough (Mass.), 9-1

Emerson Midura had four goals, one assist, one draw control and one ground ball, Maddie MacDonald had two goals, one assist and two draw controls and Caroline McCullough added one assist, four draw controls, one ground ball and one caused turnover in a 17-5 win over St. Mark’s (Mass.). Previous: 6

7. Sayville (N.Y.), 12-0

Dylan McNamara had three goals, Sophia Buffardi and McKenna Farrell scored two goals apiece, Sofia Cangelosi had one goal and one assist and Abby Galaris had a pair of assists in a 9-5 win over Westhampton (N.Y.). Previous: 10

8. Bayport-Blue Point (N.Y.), 11-2

The Phantoms made it seven wins in a row, defeating Rocky Point (N.Y.) 7-3. Ava Meyn had two goals and two assists and Aubrie Eisfeld and Julia Fusco scored two goals apiece to lead Bayport-Blue Point (N.Y.), which has two losses by two combined goals. Previous: NR

9. Sacred Heart Greenwich (Conn.), 10-2

After a 13-4 victory over Greenwich Academy (Conn.), Sacred Heart Greenwich (Conn.) fell to Agnes Irwin (PA), 10-5. A trip to Chatham (N.J.) is this week with a tasty showdown with Darien (Conn.) on the horizon. Previous: 7

10. Wilton (Conn.), 9-1

The Warriors made it four straight wins following a one-goal loss to Rye (N.Y.), beating West Islip (N.Y.), 10-7. Addie Pattillo had four goals, three assists and seven draw controls, Addison Dobson had two goals and one assist and Georgia Polito, Ally Phelan and Rose Bilella scored one goal each. Previous: NR

MID-ATLANTIC

1. McDonogh (Md.), 14-1

McDonogh won a pair of IAAM games to wrap up the top seed for the playoffs. The Eagles marched over Roland Park (Md.) 18-4 after dispatching of Garrison Forest (Md.) 13-8. McDonogh has won 11 games in a row. They put their unbeaten IAAM record on the line in the regular-season finale against St. Paul’s (Md.). Previous: 1

2. Good Counsel (Md.), 17-0

The Falcons won their only game this week 16-7 over St. John’s College High (D.C.) on April 26. The seven goals were the most that Good Counsel has given up in their last six games. They finish the regular season with St. Mary’s Ryken (Md.) on April 30. Previous: 2

3. Episcopal (Pa.), 15-1

The Churchwomen bounced back from their lone loss with a 12-5 win over Penn Charter (Pa.) on April 23. Maura Irish scored four goals, had three draw controls and four caused turnovers. Quinn Whitaker scored three goals, had six draw controls and a ground ball and caused turnover. Sydney Richter won four draws and had two goals. Episcopal downed IMG National (Fla.) 8-3 on April 26. 4. St. Anne’s-Belfield (Va.), 17-1

The Saints wrapped up their regular season with a 12-9 win over Collegiate School (Va.). They had beaten St. Catherine’s (Va.) 16-2 in their early game. They will be the top seed for the Virginia Independent Schools Athletic Association Division I state championship that eluded them last year. Previous: 4

5. Maryvale (Md.), 14-2

The Lions picked up three wins in the week. They topped Notre Dame (Md.) 9-8 to start the week, dominated St. Mary’s Annapolis (Md.) 14-5 and defeated Mercy (Md.) 14-10. The Lions are in three-way tie for second place in the IAAM. They take on fifth-place John Carroll (Md.) to end the regular season. Previous: 6

6. Archbishop Spalding (Md.), 11-3

The Cavaliers picked up a pair of wins to remain in a three-way tie for second place in the IAAM. They beat Bryn Mawr (Md.) 9-6 and then dispatched of Glenelg Country (Md.) 14-5. Spalding battles sixth-place Notre Dame (Md.) in their regular-season finale. Previous: 7

7. St. Paul's (Md.), 13-4

The Gators defeated Mount de Sales (Md.) 17-6, then dominated Severn School (Md.) 12-1. St. Paul’s is tied for second place after winning their fifth straight game. The Gators take on first-place McDonogh to close the regular season. Previous: 8

8. Stone Ridge (Md.), 11-4

The Gators dropped an 8-5 decision to Georgetown Visitation (D.C.) on April 25 in their lone game of the week. Visi had already lost games this year to Roland Park (Md.) and Bishop Ireton (Va.). Stone Ridge finishes the regular season with games against Potomac (Va.) and Episcopal (Va.). Previous: 5

9. Manchester Valley (Md.), 12-0

The Mavericks picked up a pair of lopsided wins to remain unbeaten. Manchester Valley beat Middletown (Md.) 21-4 and then dismantled Linganore (Md.) 19-2. They finish the regular season with games against Oakdale (Md.) and Liberty (Md.). Previous: 10

10. Morristown (N.J.), 11-0

The Colonials remain unbeaten against a who’s who of strong in-state programs. Morristown defeated Pingry (N.J.) 13-8 behind six goals and an assist from Temple commit Cathleen Moran, who has been off to a hot scoring start. Megan O’Brien added a pair of goals and five assists and Anna Szporn had a hat trick. Eloise Downes made 11 saves. Earlier in the week, Morristown avenged a pair of losses last year to Ridgewood (N.J.) including in the Group IV final, with a 12-7 win. Moran scored four times and had two assists. 1. American Heritage-Delray (Fla.), 18-1

Thirteen different Stallions tallied goals in their 18-1 playoff win over Ransom Everglades (Fla.). Brooke Goldstein, who has scored in every game this year, had a pair of tallies in the win. Previous: 1

2. Plant (Fla.), 20-0

Ashlyn Bell was among 14 Panthers to score in Plant’s 20-2 victory over Palmetto Ridge (Fla.). Bell had a hat trick in the win. Mckenzey Craig won 10 out of 11 draw attempts. Previous: 2

3. Cardinal Gibbons (N.C.), 15-4

The Crusaders won a pair of playoff games last week by a combined margin of 37-1. Lexi Mullahy had two goals and four assists in an 18-0 victory over Athens Drive (N.C.). Fifteen Crusaders scored in Cardinal Gibbons’ 19-1 win over Sanderson (N.C.). Previous: 3

4. Milton (Ga.), 15-4

The Eagles defeated Mill Creek (Ga.) for a second time this season, this time by a 11-6 margin. Milton next faces Cherokee (Ga.) in the state quarterfinals. Previous: 4

5. Bartram Trail (Fla.), 14-5

Ryann Frechette and Reya Berkman combined for 19 points during the Bears’ 21-0 playoff win over Fletcher (Fla.). Frechette had 10 points while Berkman had nine points. Previous: 5

6. Hockaday (Texas), 15-4

The Daisies had the week off after their 20-10 win over St. John’s (Texas) on April 20. Hockaday returns to action May 4 in regional playoff action. Previous: 6

7. Anderson (Texas), 10-3

The Trojans are in the midst of a nearly two-week layoff after falling to Torrey Pines (Calif.) on April 20. Anderson’s postseason begins May 4. Previous: 7

8. IMG Academy (Fla.), 14-4

With in-state schools now in state playoffs, the Ascenders went north to take on three quality opponents in Pennsylvania, including arguably the top team in state. IMG Academy opened the trip falling to Episcopal (Pa.) 8-3. IMG Academy bounced back with an 11-10 win over Springside Chestnut Hill (Pa.). IMG also picked up an 11-7 win over Hill School (Pa.). Taylor Santos had eight goals in the three games of the road trip. Previous: 8

9. Bishop England (S.C.), 19-0

The Battling Bishop earned another state championship, easily defeating Riverside (S.C.) 22-2. Bishop England advanced to the championship game following a 12-2 victory over Oceanside Collegiate Academy (S.C.). Bo Rosato, a senior committed to Johns Hopkins, had six goals and three assists in the championship. Previous: 9

10. Blessed Trinity (Ga.), 16-1

The Titans’ postseason journey continued thanks to a 19-2 win over Newman (Ga.) followed by a 22-6 victory over Decatur (Ga.). Clark Hamilton had six goals in the win over Decatur. Rylie Smith had a hat trick against Newman. Previous: 10

1. Loyola Academy (Ill.), 10-3

The Ramblers had another impressive week, out-scoring Montini Catholic (Ill.) and Rockford (Mich.) by a combined 38-5. Senior Charlie Cassady (1 goal, 5 assists) and freshmen Molly Dwyer (4 goals, 1 assist) and Jillian Rocchio (5 ground balls, 5 draw controls) delivered huge performances in the Ramblers’ win over the Broncos. Emma Burke then took over against the Rams with five goals while Rocchio also had a hat trick. Previous: 1

2. New Albany (Ohio), 12-0

The Eagles got another big week from senior keeper Ryan Franklin, who had eight saves against Dublin Coffman (Ohio) and four against Medina (Ohio). Seniors Ellie McClelland (10 goals, 14 ground balls, 11 draw controls) and Maddy Paz (9 goals, 9 ground balls, 15 draw controls) also played a big role in New Albany’s 3-0 week, in which it topped Dublin Coffman, Medina and Westerville Central (Ohio) by a combined margin of 44-10. Previous: 2

The Golden Bears were dominant in their lone game of the week, a 20-0 win over Hilliard Bradley (Ohio). A busier week awaits with three games, all against teams with winning records, capped by 2023 state champ Guerin Catholic (Ind.) on April 27. Previous: 3

4. Olentangy Liberty (Ohio), 9-3

The stars came out to help the Patriots survive a tough test from Dublin Coffman, including five goals, three ground balls, three caused turnovers and an assist from senior Isabelle Pohmer. Juniors Corinna Hilmas (3 goals, 1 assist), Molly Brooks (2 goals, 2 assists) and Madeline Pohmer (2 goals, 10 draw controls) also played leading roles in the 14-12 win. Previous: 4

5. Benet Academy (Ill.), 13-1

The Redwings were in full control of this past week’s games, topping in-state foes Carmel Catholic and St. Charles by a combined 20 goals. A challenge awaits May 1 as Benet Academy squares off against one-loss St. Ignatius (Ill.). Previous: 5

6. Benilde-St. Margaret's (Minn.), 6-0

The Red Knights stayed undefeated, winning all three of their in-state games (against Bloomington Jefferson, St. Louis Park and Wayzata) by double-digit margins. Julia Evens and Charlize Vang had seven points apiece against the Orioles and six points apiece against the Jaguars, with Karsyn Elliott and Vang adding four assists apiece against the Trojans. Previous: 6

7. Kentucky Country Day (Ky.), 21-2

The Bearcats won a big matchup against one of the Hoosier State’s top teams, beating Carmel, 14-8, April 27. In addition to sophomore Ellie Beam’s four goals, freshman Preston Amin had a hat trick, and junior Leighton Spears, sophomore Ceci Flowers and freshman Zaylee Madison also scored multiple goals for KCD. Previous: 7

8. New Trier (Ill.), 9-5

The Trevians continued to cement their spot in the top ten, going 3-0, including decisive wins against one of the top teams in Illinois (12-4 against Hinsdale Central) and one of the top teams in Michigan (16-7 over Rockford). Sophomore keeper Meg Gallagher saved two-thirds of the shots that came her way against the Red Devils while junior Ellie Bornhoeft had four goals, two assists and a whopping 12 draw controls. 9. Hinsdale Central (Ill.), 11-3

After the Trevians held the Red Devils to four goals on April 25, they exploded for 17 against Downers Grove Co-Op (Ill.), including five from junior Peyton Moncrief. Senior Parker Matthews and freshman McCall Brzozowski added hat tricks for Hinsdale Central. Previous: 8

10. Guerin Catholic (Ind.), 13-2

The Golden Eagles had a dominant week, scoring 17 goals apiece against Brebeuf Jesuit Prep (Ind.), Culver Academy (Ind.) and Lincoln-Way Co-Op (Ill.) and topping all three by a double-digit margin. 1. Colorado Academy (Colo.), 13-0

The Mustangs stay undefeated after securing victories against No. 9 Valor Christian (Colo.) and Chatfield (Colo.). It was a close 11-10 win over Valor that preceded a dominant 21-6 performance against Chatfield. Up next is Denver East (Colo.) and Regis Jesuit (Colo.). Previous: 1

2. Oak Ridge (Calif.), 17-2

Oak Ridge had another perfect week, including a huge 9-7 upset over previously-ranked No. 2 St. Ignatius Prep (Calif.). Annika Tanner (Louisville) recorded four draw controls and three goals against the Wildcats. They are undefeated in conference play and face Woodcreek (Calif.) next. Previous: 5

3. St. Ignatius Prep (Calif.), 14-5

The Wildcats added two more wins, dominating Menlo-Atherton (Calif.) and Menlo School (Calif.) before falling, 9-7, to previously-ranked No. 5 Oak Ridge. St. Ignattus, 9-1 in league play, prepares for playoffs next. Previous: 2

4. San Ramon Valley (Calif.), 17-1

San Ramon Valley heads into the playoffs on a five-game win streak after defeating Foothill-Santa Ana (Calif.) and Monte Vista (Calif.). Postseason begins May 2. Previous: 3

5. Sacred Heart Prep (Calif.), 16-2

The Gators took down league opponents Saint Francis (Calif.) and Archbishop Mitty (Calif.) to close out the regular season. Previous: 4

6. Foothill-Santa Ana (Calif.), 12-2

The Knights only allowed one opponent goal across their last two games against El Modena (Calif.) and La Jolla (Calif.). Foothill is No. 1 in its league heading into the postseason. Previous: 6

7. ThunderRidge (Colo.), 12-1

ThunderRidge went 3-0 last week and took down previously-ranked No. 7 Fairview (Colo.), 11-8. Junior Riley Rivera (Florida Southern) netted six goals, had two assists and two ground balls. Cheyenne Mountain (Colo.) and Palmer Ridge (Colo.) are on deck. Previous: 8

8. Fairview (Colo.), 8-2

After falling 11-8 to then-No. 8 ThunderRidge (Colo.), Fairview hung on to defeat Regis Jesuit (Colo.) 10-9 in extra time. Junior Grace McCollester led the offense with four goals and tore up the midfield, grabbing two ground balls, causing a pair of turnovers and had 10 draw controls. Previous: 7

9. Valor Christian (Colo.), 7-5

Valor Christian was edged 11-10 by No. 1 Colorado Academy in an overtime thriller that gave the Eagles its first league loss. They went on to defeat Ralston Valley (Colo.) ahead of their final three regular season games. Previous: 9

10. Kent Denver (Colo.), 8-4

Kent Denver defeated league opponent Columbine (Colo.) then Chaparral (Colo.). In both games, the goals were spread out across at least eight different players. A trio of games to round out the regular season is up next. Previous: 10
