Report: Dox Aitken Invited to New England Patriots Rookie Minicamp

Dox Aitken never played a college football game, but that’s not stopping the New England Patriots from giving him a chance to play in the NFL.

The team that brought Chris Hogan to fame and whose coach is an unabashed lacrosse supporter has invited the former Virginia standout to rookie minicamp for a tryout this weekend, Doug Kyed of A to Z Sports tweeted Friday.

Aitken, a four-time All-American midfielder and member of the gold medal-winning 2016 U.S. U19 team, transferred to Villanova to play wide receiver when the pandemic ended the 2020 lacrosse season prematurely. He spent that fall semester in camp with the Wildcats but decided to return to Virginia in the spring of 2021 and helped lead the Cavaliers to their second straight NCAA championship. He’s the highest-scoring midfielder (138 goals) in Virginia history.

Aitken, 25, currently is under contract with the Atlas Lacrosse Club in the Premier Lacrosse League. He played in five PLL games in 2021 and eight in 2022, totaling 15 goals and four assists.

Aitken was a standout football player in high school at the Haverford School in Philadelphia. A wide receiver, defensive back and punter, he was the Inter-Ac Player of the Year and an all-city and all-county honoree. As a senior in 2015, he led the Fords to an undefeated (10-0) season, setting school records for receiving yards (858) and touchdown receptions (11) in a season.
