Boston College High Joins Northeast Top 10 for First Time in 2023

Every Tuesday during the high school lacrosse season, USA Lacrosse updates Regional Top 10 and National Top 25 rankings to reflect the results of the previous week. Below are the Nike/USA Lacrosse High School Boys’ Regional Top 10 updates through games played May 14.

St. Anthony’s (N.Y.) closed its season at the head of the Northeast Region rankings. Brunswick (Conn.) has found its footing again to slide up to No. 2 with unbeaten Mount Sinai (N.Y.) remaining unbeaten heading into playoffs. Chaminade (N.Y.) jumped Manhasset (N.Y.) by handing the Indians their first loss of the year. Boston College High (Mass.) and Farmingdale (N.Y.) use key victories to claim spots in the Top 10.

For the second week in a row, the top five remain in place in the Mid-Atlantic Region, with Lawrenceville (N.J.) edging McDonogh (Md.) for the top spot. McDonogh (Md.) and Haverford (Pa.) try to uphold their top seedings in their conference playoffs this week. Georgetown Prep (Md.) and St. John’s (D.C.) lived up to their league’s top billings with championship wins. Calvert Hall (Md.) continues to peak at the right time with another big win to move up a spot and playoff quarterfinal winners Boys’ Latin (Md.) and Loyola-Blakefield (Md.) climbed. Radnor (Pa.) moved into the rankings after handling Salesianum (Del.) in combination with Seton Hall Prep (N.J.) losing its first game to Malvern (Pa.).

Highland Park (Texas) rallied to claim the state championship and make a jump up to No. 4 in the South Region. They follow state champions Lake Mary (Fla.) and St. Andrew’s (Fla.), which won state championships the week before, and Cardinal Gibbons (N.C.), which is in the midst of chasing a title of its own but must go through another ranked team in No. 9 Middle Creek (N.C.). No. 6 Roswell (Ga.) also wrapped up a state crown.

Culver Academy (Ind.) is gearing up for its final tournament of the year. While the top team in the Midwest Region was off this week, others in the Top 10 were in the midst of some challenging games that showed just how tight the competition is. Detroit Catholic Central (Mich.) won a rematch with Brother Rice (Mich.), and No. 4 Upper Arlington (Ohio) picked up another pair of impressive wins out of region. Rockhurst Jesuit (Mo.) and Benilde-St. Margaret’s (Minn.) put their perfect records on the line.

The top four teams in the West Region are in the midst of playoff runs. Former No. 5 Loyola-Los Angeles (Calif.) fell a couple of spots after its championship run ended. Mater Dei (Calif.) also saw its season end in the playoffs. The remainder of the Top 10 continues to hunt titles with No. 2 Valor Christian (Colo.) and No. 3 Regis Jesuit (Colo.) potentially on a collision course.

NORTHEAST TOP 10

1. St. Anthony’s (N.Y.), 12-1

The Friars rebounded from their lone loss of the season, which bounced them from the No. 1 spot in the national poll, to defeat Chaminade (N.Y.), 17-11, to close out their season with a fourth straight CHSAA state title. Jackson Greene had four goals for St. Anthony’s (N.Y.), while Jack Speidell, Patrick Carragher, Aidan Zuhoski and Luke Breslin each added two goals. Previous: 1

2. Brunswick School (Conn.), 12-3

A 14-9 victory over Avon Old Farms (Conn.) on Wednesday was followed by an 18-15 win over Salisbury (Conn.) for a Brunswick School (Conn.) team that has won six straight following a 10-9 loss to Taft (Conn.) back on April 19. The Bruins’ three defeats this season are from a combined four goals. Previous: 4

3. Mt. Sinai (N.Y.), 16-0

It’s hard to be undefeated in mid-May, but that’s where the Mustangs find themselves heading into the Suffolk Class C playoffs. Mt. Sinai (N.Y) is the favorite to win a third straight county title and appear to be on a collision course for another Long Island Championship showdown with Manhasset (N.Y.). Jake Spallina and Lucas LaForge each had four goals and three assists in a 17-2 win over Sayville (N.Y.) to close out the regular season. Previous: 6

4. Chaminade (N.Y.), 10-4

The Flyers bounced back from the loss to St. Anthony’s (N.Y.) to defeat Manhasset (N.Y.) in the 14th Reg’s Rock Lacrosse Day for Heroes. Fittingly, the Chaminade player who this year wears Jimmy Regan’s No. 19, Gavin Creo, was the star with five goals, including the winner with 1:22 left in the fourth quarter, to pace the Flyers to a 10-9 victory Saturday at Gold Star Stadium. 5. Manhasset (N.Y.), 14-1

Manhasset (N.Y.) suffered its first loss of the year, falling to Chaminade (N.Y.), 10-9, in a classic on Saturday. Cal Girard won 16 of 22 faceoffs and scored a goal and Matt Cargiulo scored four goals for the Indians, who now turn their attention on repeating as Nassau Class C champions. Previous: 2

6. Boston College High (Mass.), 13-1

The Eagles have taken down the top-ranked teams in Massachusetts, Rhode Island and now the top-ranked public school in Connecticut, defeating Fairfield Prep (Conn.) 14-10 at home Saturday. Will Emsing had four goals and two assists, Patrick Maroney had three goals, Brody Rice had two goals and one assist and Cooper Chapman added a pair of goals. Previous: NR

7. Fairfield Prep (Conn.), 11-2

The Jesuits had a 12-game winning streak snapped by Boston College HS (Mass.) on Saturday. Fairfield Prep (Conn.) will look to rebound this week against Delbarton (N.J.) in a regular-season finale Saturday. Previous: 3

8. Darien (Conn.), 12-4

It’s now eight straight wins for the Blue Wave after knocking off Greenwich (Conn.) 15-2 on Saturday. That came on the heels of an 8-6 victory over Chatham (N.J.). The FCIAC tournament is next for Jeff Brameier’s squad. Previous: 8

9. Connetquot (N.Y.), 14-2

The T-Birds are the top-seed in the upcoming Suffolk Class A playoffs after closing out the regular season with an 8-5 win at Longwood (N.Y.). Connetquot (N.Y.), in search of a first-ever county championship, enters the postseason on an eight-game winning streak. Previous: 10

10. Farmingdale (N.Y.), 12-3

Brendan O’Keefe had five goals and five assists, Caden Lennon had six goals, CJ Mangio won 18 of 22 faceoffs and James Goodrich added a pair of goals for the Dalers in a 15-6 win over archival Massapequa (N.Y.) Saturday. Previous: NR

MID-ATLANTIC TOP 10

1. Lawrenceville (N.J.), 17-1

The Big Red more than doubled up Academy of the New Church (Pa.) 17-8 to start their week. DJ Clark scored four goals, and Chris Matia and Connor Gately each had a hat trick and two assists. Hunter Chauvette scored twice and assisted on a third goal. Robert Simone won 14 faceoffs. After a 3-2 first-quarter edge, Lawrenceville pulled into control with a 7-0 second quarter advantage. They handled Trinity-Pawling (N.Y.) 21-4 to end their regular season. They led 16-0 after three quarters. Chauvette scored six goals and had an assist, Mikey Rooney had four goals and Chuck Rawson had a hat trick and two assists. Matia dished out five assists and Hale Brown won 10 faceoffs. They will play at the National Prep Lacrosse Championships at Brunswick on May 19. Previous: 1

2. McDonogh (Md.), 15-1

The Eagles closed out the regular season as the only one-loss team in the MIAA A Conference to earn the top seed for the playoffs. McDonogh held off Gilman (Md.) 12-8 in their final game of the regular season. They had a first-round bye and will meet Boys’ Latin (Md.) in the semifinals on May 16. McDonogh defeated Boys’ Latin in the semifinals last year and also edged them 11-10 in their regular-season matchup this year. Previous: 2

3. Haverford (Pa.), 16-2

The Fords ended their regular season with a narrow 12-11 win over a dangerous Episcopal Academy (Pa.) team for the outright Inter-Ac League regular-season title. Ben McCarthy and Griff Meyer each had eight ground balls, and Ryan DiRocco paced the offense with six points on three goals and three assists. Wills Burt also returned to the lineup with a three-goal game after missing the win over St. Anthony’s (N.Y.). Colin Zeller scored twice and Aydan DiRocco picked up a pair of assists. Brody Murphy made five saves for Haverford, which is the top seed for the Inter-Ac playoffs and faces fourth-seeded Springside Chestnut Hill (Pa.) on Wednesday in the semifinals. 4. Georgetown Prep (Md.), 16-2

The Hoyas finished the season on a 13-game winning streak capped by an unbeaten run through the IAC. Georgetown claimed the IAC championship on Friday with a 14-9 win over Landon (Md.) in the tournament final. Nate Kabiri scored three goals. Colin Burns also had a hat trick. Owen Horning’s pair of goals helped push the Hoyas to a 9-4 halftime lead and they didn’t look back. Georgetown beat Bullis (Md.) 14-5 in the semifinals. Georgetown won its IAC games this year by more than nine goals per game on average. Previous: 4

5. St. John’s (D.C.), 15-3

The Cadets defended their WCAC Championship with a 9-5 win over Paul VI (Va.) on May 9. It was the eighth straight win for St. John’s, which bolted out to a 5-1 lead and then relied on a strong defensive effort backstopped by goalie Caleb Fyock to keep that advantage. Connor Shannon’s return from an injury suffered in the season opener sparked St. John’s in the WCAC playoffs. He scored a goal in the championship. Previous: 5

6. Calvert Hall (Md.) 10-5

The Cardinals won their fifth straight game to end the regular season. Calvert Hall earned the first-round bye by finishing second in the MIAA A Conference after a 6-5 win over Loyola-Blakefield (Md.) in a game between the two teams that were tied for the second spot coming into the contest. Alex Schwartz made 13 saves in the low-scoring affair. Jackson Strickland won 11 faceoffs and Ryan Botek accounted for half of Calvert’s goals with a hat trick. Calvert Hall faces Loyola-Blakefield on May 16 with even more on the line – a trip to the MIAA championship is at stake. Previous: 7

7. Boys’ Latin (Md.), 12-5

The Lakers got six goals from Spencer Ford in a 15-11 win over St. Mary’s to advance to the semifinals of the MIAA A Conference playoffs. Seeded fifth, Boys’ Latin jumped out to an 8-2 lead thanks in part to a dominant performance at the faceoff X from Parker Hoffman. Hoffman also finished with a hat trick as did Matthew Higgins. Niko Karetsos assisted on three goals. The win avenged one of Boys’ Latin’s regular-season losses. Boys’ Latin takes on McDonogh in a rematch of last year’s semifinal won by the Eagles. Previous: 8

8. Loyola-Blakefield (Md.), 11-6

The third-seeded Dons advanced to the MIAA A Conference semifinals with a 14-9 win over sixth-seeded St. Paul’s (Md.) on Friday. Loyola, which had lost three of its last four games coming into the playoffs, got five goals from Mason Cook and Shane Elliott scored four times and dished out a pair of assists. Matt Burnam scored twice and had three assists. Ty Bleach also had two goals. Loyola was up early but St. Paul’s fought back to tie it, 7-7, before the Dons closed the game on a 7-2 run. The win sets up a rematch with second-seeded Calvert Hall, one week after the Cardinals beat them 6-5 to earn the first-round bye. Previous: 9

9. St. Mary’s (Md.) 14-5

The Saints lost a rematch with Boys’ Latin (Md.) 14-5 in the MIAA A Conference quarterfinals to end their season. Seeded fourth, St. Mary’s fell to the fifth-seeded Lakers, whom they had knocked off 10-9 in the regular season. Shea Kennedy made nine saves. Nick Golini scored four goals while Jake Kucinski had a pair of goals. Jake Adams had a pair of assists. St. Mary’s needed overtime to get by Severn School (Md.) 9-8 in the regular-season finale to clinch the fourth seed. Previous: 6

10. Radnor (Pa.) 16-2

After a scoreless first half, the Raptors erupted for a 9-0 win over Conestoga (Pa.) to clinch the Central League championship. Colin French and Mason Montrella each had a hat trick and one assist. Owen Knight and Kessler Cox both had two assists. Nick DeCain made 10 saves. Radnor picked up another big win when it more than doubled up Salesianum (Del.) 13-6. French scored five times, and Montrella and Max Goldstein each scored twice. Knight posted another two assists to go with a goal and DeCain made five saves. Previous: NR

SOUTH TOP 10

1. Lake Mary (Fla.), 24-0

Led by dynamic junior Cayden Harshbarger, the Rams claimed their first-ever state title this year en route to a perfect season. Lake Mary’s season was highlighted by its championship win over St. Thomas Aquinas (Fla.) and a March 27 victory over Lake Highland Prep (Fla.). Lake Mary is slated to return nearly its entire roster, making it the team to beat in 2024 in the South. Previous: 1

2. St. Andrew’s (Fla.), 19-3

The Scots claimed their third state championship in a row in Florida’s top division, defeating Bolles (Fla.) 9-8. Top wins for St. Andrew’s included contests against Groton School (Mass.) and Lake Highland Prep (Fla.). Senior Jack Schulte scored a team-leading 59 goals in his final year before heading to Air Force. Freshman Nick Testa had a team-leading 75 assists. Previous: 2

3. Cardinal Gibbons (N.C.), 19-5

The Crusaders are two wins away from claiming a state championship after winning their state quarterfinal against Hoggard (N.C.) 19-6. The win followed a 17-0 win over Holly Springs (N.C.). Senior Ayden Turner had six goals and three assists versus Hoggard after posting five goals against Holly Springs. Junior Brady Dolan had five goals in both contests. Previous: 3

4. Highland Park (Texas), 18-4

After trailing 9-6 midway through the third quarter, the Fighting Scots took control of Sunday’s state championship, defeating The Woodlands (Texas) 14-10. Highland Park advanced to the title game after defeating Episcopal School of Dallas 11-10 in overtime after nearly blowing an eight-goal lead. Duncan Zielke scored the overtime winner. Previous: 8

5. Bolles (Fla.), 22-3

The Bulldogs had their unblemished record against in-state competition spoiled in the state title game by losing to St. Andrew’s (Fla.) 9-8. Bolles’ only other losses in 2023 came against Dublin Jerome (Ohio) and Springside Chestnut Hill (Pa.). Bolles posted solid wins over Lucy Beckham (S.C.) and Jesuit (Fla.). Junior High Point commitment Gavin Boree had a team-leading 83 goals while junior Jacksonville recruit Daylin John-Hill had 155 points. Previous: 4

6. Roswell (Ga.), 20-3

The Hornets won their first state championship in eight years by defeating Allatoona (Ga.) 17-10. Senior Michigan recruit Alex Lobel scored seven times in the state title win. Roswell advanced to the state title game thanks to a 20-12 win over Cambridge (Ga.). Lobel scored six times in the semifinal. Previous: 7

7. Lake Highland Prep (Fla.), 15-4

The Highlanders made it to the semifinals of the state playoffs, but lost to eventual state champions St. Andrew’s (Fla.). The Highlanders season was highlighted by wins over St. Edward (Fla.) and St. Thomas Aquinas (Fla.). Junior Rutgers recruit Owen Lenox had a team-leading 47 goals. Lake Highland Prep returns six of their top seven goal scorers next year. Previous: 6

8. The Woodlands (Texas), 18-4

The Highlanders held a 9-6 lead in the third quarter of the state championship versus Highland Park (Texas), but were unable to hold the lead, falling 14-10. The Woodlands advanced to the state title game after defeating Westlake (Texas) 13-10 in the semifinals. Previous: 5

9. Middle Creek (N.C.), 22-1

The Mustangs are hoping to repeat history from last year. Middle Creek is two wins away from defending its state championship, but must get past Cardinal Gibbons (N.C.) in the semifinal for another year. Middle Creek advanced to the semifinals after defeating Topsail (N.C.) 19-2. James Cardillo had a four-goal effort. Middle Creek also picked up a 16-6 win over Pinecrest (N.C.) with Cardillo leading the way with five tallies. Previous: 10

10. St. Thomas Aquinas (Fla.), 17-4

The Raiders played their best lacrosse of the season in April, but couldn’t carry that momentum into last week’s state title game. St. Thomas Aquinas lost to unbeaten Lake Mary (Fla.). The Raiders earned a spot in the championship after defeating Winter Park (Fla.) 16-5. The future is bright at Aquinas as two of its leading scorers, James Finch and Benjamin Kupstas, are underclassmen. Previous: 9

MIDWEST TOP 10

1. Culver Academy (Ind.), 15-2

After edging Western Reserve Academy (Ohio) in the Midwest Scholastic Lacrosse Association championship game, the Eagles get nearly two weeks off before competing in the National Prep Lacrosse Championship. Culver will face off against Bullis School May 19 in the NPLC semifinals. Previous: 1

2. Brother Rice (Mich.) 15-2

It’s never easy to beat a good team twice in 12 days, and sure enough the Warriors fell in their rematch against Detroit Catholic Central (Mich.) to split their regular-season series. Now, Brother Rice, with only two losses all year, both by a single goal, enters the postseason as the No. 1 seed in Region 6. Previous: 2

3. Dublin Jerome (Ohio), 16-1

The Celtics ended the regular season with a 16-12 victory at St. Xavier (Ohio). The opponent was fitting as Marek Tzagournis tied St. Xavier alum Connor Buczek as Ohio’s all-time leader in points with 410, a particularly impressive feat given Tzagournis lost his freshman season due to COVID. 4. Upper Arlington (Ohio), 16-2

The Golden Bears went on one last out-of-state trip before the postseason, picking up impressive wins over Hamburg (N.Y.) and New Canaan (Conn.), which happens to be one of Connecticut’s top teams. Jack Caine was brilliant in both wins, with five goals against the Bulldogs and six goals against the Rams, as was Sam Old, who had 14 saves against New Canaan. Previous: 4

5. Detroit Catholic Central (Mich.), 14-2

The Shamrocks had one of the more impressive weeks of any Midwest team, going 3-0, including wins over two of the Mitten State’s best. After beating East Grand Rapids by a seven-goal margin, Detroit Catholic Central was able to edge one of the state’s (and region’s) best in Brother Rice. Don’t miss a big contest at Forest Hills Central on May 19. Previous: 6

6. Hartland (Mich.), 15-2

Talk about bouncing back. The Eagles rallied from a heartbreakingly close loss to Dublin Jerome (Ohio) with a 3-0 week, capped by an impressive 15-3 win over one of the Mitten State’s top teams: Forest Hills Central. Drew Lockwood played a massive role in that victory with six goals. Previous: 7

7. St. Viator (Ill.), 18-1

The Lions enter the postseason on a six-game win streak, including a decisive 16-9 victory over Mukwonago, one of Wisconsin’s top teams. Thanks to its stellar regular season, St. Viator got the top seed in the Lincolnshire Sectional. Watch out for a potential supersectional contest against Loyola Academy, New Trier or whoever captures the Glenview Sectional. Previous: 8

8. Rockhurst Jesuit (Mo.), 16-0

The Hawklets picked up yet another dominant victory, 28-3, over Lee’s Summit West (Mo.), marking their fifth straight win by 13-plus goals. Those 28 goals came from a whopping 16 Rockhurst Jesuit players, including hat tricks from seniors Brock Narciso and Johnny Steffano and junior Luke McNamara. Previous: 9

9. Benilde-St. Margaret’s (Minn.), 10-0

After a challenging victory over St. Thomas Academy (Minn.) May 4, the Red Knights had a more comfortable week, topping Moorhead (Minn.) and New Prague (Minn.) by 15-plus goals. This week brings a big challenge as Benilde-St. Margaret’s and Chanhassen (Minn.) meet in a battle of undefeated teams. Previous: T10

T10. Wheaton Academy (Ill.) 16-1

The Warriors passed two big tests, and with flying colors at that, as they beat Lake Forest (Ill.) by seven goals and New Trier (Ill.) by 12. Next up, Wheaton Academy faces Maine South (Ill.) in its regular-season finale before heading into the postseason. Previous: T10

T10. Forest Hills Central (Mich.), 13-3

After recording seven straight wins, much of it against steep competition, the Rangers finally fell, 15-3 to Hartland (Mich.). While the result was a tough one, Forest Hills Central’s resume is still plenty impressive with out-of-state wins over the likes of Carmel (Ind.), Hamilton Southeastern (Ind.), Hudson (Ohio) and St. Xavier (Ohio). Don’t underestimate this Rangers team. Previous: 5

WEST TOP 10

1. St. Ignatius Prep (Calif.), 20-4

The top-seeded Wildcats advance to the CIF Central Coast Section semifinals with a 15-3 win over Menlo-Atherton (Calif.) on Friday in their opening game of the tournament after earning a first-round bye. St. Ignatius faces Bellarmine Prep (Calif.) on May 17 and will be looking for a chance to defend its 2022 title with a possible rematch of last year’s final against Sacred Heart Prep (Calif.). 2. Valor Christian (Colo.), 15-1

The Eagles rolled to a 20-5 win over Denver East (Colo.) in the second round of the CHSAA Class 5A tournament, and they will next face Arapahoe (Colo.) in the quarterfinals. Valor Christian topped Arapahoe 7-3 on March 24. The Eagles’ lone loss this season was a 9-7 decision against Cherry Creek on March 29. Previous: 2

3. Regis Jesuit (Colo.), 14-2

The Raiders beat Cherokee Trail (Colo.) 14-2 in a second-round Class 5A tournament game last week, and they move on to meet Kent Denver (Colo.) in the quarterfinals May 17. Regis topped Kent 13-8 on March 24 and would get a chance to avenge a regular-season loss to Valor Christian if both teams make it to the semifinals. Previous: 3

4. Cherry Creek (Colo.), 16-1

The Bruins bounced back from their regular-season finale loss to Regis Jesuit by cruising to a 15-6 win over Columbine (Colo.) in the second round of the Class 5A tournament. Up next is Denver South (Colo.) in the quarterfinals, as Cherry Creek looks to repeat a 17-4 victory from a regular-season matchup April 11. Previous: 4

5. De La Salle (Calif.), 21-3

The Spartans repeated as CIF North Coast champions, beating Redwood (Calif.), 13-10, in the final May 11 after topping Vista del Lago (Calif.) in the semifinals. Hudson Lee scored four goals and Ben Kangas added three goals to lead the attack in the championship game. De La Salle had notable wins over Foothill-Santa Ana (Calif.) and Sacred Heart Prep, and its lone on-field losses were against St. Ignatius and Mater Dei (Calif.), in overtime. Previous: 6

6. Foothill-Santa Ana (Calif.), 18-6

The Knights bounced back from back-to-back losses in the final week of the regular season to beat two quality opponents in the opening rounds of the CIF Southern Section tournament. They edged St. Margaret’s (Calif.) 12-11 on Blake Wozniak’s overtime game-winner, then toppled former No. 5 Mater Dei (Calif.) 15-7 in the quarterfinals with hat tricks from Connor Pietras, Jackson Hines and Sean Sanchez and 10 saves from Cohen Krudwig. Now they get a rematch against Corona del Mar in the semifinals. Previous: 7

7. Loyola-Los Angeles (Calif.), 18-6

The Cubs fell short in the CIF Southern Section championship, ending a seven-game winning streak that began with a notable overtime win over Corona del Mar and a 12-2 win over Santa Margarita Catholic (Calif.) in the semifinals. Trent Turner scored a hat trick and had an assist in the championship game. All of Loyola’s losses were by four goals or less, including three by one goal apiece. Previous: 5

8. Mater Dei (Calif.), 18-3

Another strong season ended early when the Monarchs fell to Foothill in the CIF Southern Section quarterfinals last week. The Monarchs’ other losses were to previously-ranked Legend (Colo.) and unranked Santa Margarita Catholic (Calif.), but they had previously beaten Foothill during the regular season and also had wins over CdM and De La Salle. 9. Bishop’s School (Calif.), 17-1

The Knights advanced to the CIF San Diego Open Division semifinals with a 10-3 win over Coronado (Calif.). They next meet Cathedral Catholic (Calif.), whom they defeated 10-9 in the season opener. Torrey Pines (Calif.) and La Costa Canyon (Calif.) play in the other semifinal. Previous: 9

10. Jesuit Portland (Ore.), 13-3
