St. Anthony's (N.Y.) Claims Top Spot in Northeast Boys' Top 10

Every Tuesday during the high school lacrosse season, USA Lacrosse updates Regional Top 10 and National Top 25 rankings to reflect the results of the previous week. Below are the Nike/USA Lacrosse High School Boys’ Regional Top 10 updates through games played April 9.

St. Anthony’s (N.Y.) is the new No. 1 in the Northeast Region. The Friars remain unbeaten while former No. 1 Brunswick (Conn.) slips to No. 2 after a tough loss to Darien (Conn.). Darien might have moved higher if it had not turned around and promptly lost to a Manhasset (N.Y.) team that played lights out. Pleasantville (N.Y.) joins the Top 10 after a win over previously ranked Shoreham-Wading River (N.Y.).

McDonogh (Md.) cemented its spot at No. 1 spot in the Mid-Atlantic Region by holding off Boys’ Latin (Md.), and wins by Loyola-Blakefield (Md.) and Radnor (Pa.) prompted major movements below them. Loyola handed St. Mary’s its first loss, while Radnor’s second major win in the region moved it into the Top 10 and other teams around further. The Raptors handed Academy of the New Church (Pa.) its first loss of the season. They earlier knocked off a Malvern Prep (Pa.) team that, like ANC, already had hugely significant wins.

Lake Mary (Fla.) continues to set the pace in the South Region. They are one of only two unbeatens left in the Top 10. Losses by St. Andrew’s (Fla.) and Cardinal Gibbons (N.C.) helped St. Mark’s (Texas) slide up to No. 2. Lake Highland Prep (Fla.) and St. Thomas Aquinas (Fla.) picked up key wins to earn the No. 8 and 10 rankings respectively as they prepare for postseason play.

The Midwest Region saw just one change as none of the top nine teams lost a game in the week. New No. 10 Trinity Louisville (Ky.) enters the rankings on the strength of three straight wins. Several big matchups this week ensure that the rankings will be tested this week.

The West Region’s top five held form led by St. Ignatius Prep (Calif.). Foothill-Santa Ana (Calif.) jumped into the rankings at No. 6 after defeating Loyola Los Angeles (Calif.). Mountain Vista (Colo.) dropped two spots after a loss and Torrey Pines (Calif.) ascended into the rankings after previously ranked teams lost.

NORTHEAST TOP 10

1. St. Anthony’s (N.Y.), 6-0

The Friars improved to 6-0 on the season, 5-0 on the road, with a 17-7 victory at Delbarton (N.J.) Saturday. Owen Duffy had four goals and four assists, Jackson Greene had three goals, Jack Ponzio, Jack Speidell and Luke Breslin each had two goals and one assist apiece and Joey Rice made 11 saves for red-hot St. Anthony’s (N.Y.), who get back on the bus to take on St. John’s (D.C.), looking to avenge a loss at home last year. 2. Brunswick School (Conn.), 5-1

The Bruins couldn’t take advantage of a sensational performance from Andrew Greenspan, who won 24 of 26 faceoffs as Brady Pokorny scored the decisive goal with 1.7 seconds left as Darien (Conn.) defeated Brunswick (Conn.) 12-11 Thursday night. The Bruins bounced back to defeat Loomis Chaffee School (Conn.), 12-6, on the road Saturday. Next up is Lawrenceville School (NJ) at Cosby Field. Previous: 1

3. Chaminade (N.Y.), 4-1

It’s now four straight wins for the Flyers after a season-opening two-goal defeat vs. St. Anthony’s (N.Y.) with Chaminade defeating host Yorktown (N.Y.), 14-5, Saturday. Brendan Reilly, Connor Kuttin and Gary Correa had two goals and one assist apiece, Aidan Lough had a pair of goals and Luke Moran had one goal and one assist for the Flyers, who host St. Ignatius Prep (Calif.) before heading up to Darien (Conn.) this week. Previous: 3

4. Manhasset (N.Y.), 4-0

It was a dominant performance for Manhasset (N.Y.) in the latest Battle of the Sound, defeating Darien (Conn.), 11-2, Saturday at home. Matt Cargiulo had three goals and one assist, Liam Connor and Mike Mondiello had three goals apiece, Matt Im made eight saves and Cal Girard won 14 of 16 faceoffs and had one goal and one assist in the decisive win. The Indians face Lynbrook (N.Y.) and Mercer Island (Wash.) this week. Previous: 4

5. Darien (Conn.), 2-1

After an emotional last-second win over Brunswick School (Conn.), the Blue Wave suffered an 11-2 defeat at Manhasset Saturday afternoon. Had it not been for the outstanding play of goaltender Carter Hagen, the score likely would have been more lopsided. The junior made 13 saves, many of the spectacular variety in the defeat. Morgan Ruppenstein and Ben Bilodeau scored for the Blue Wave, who head to Fairfield-Ludlowe (Conn.) before hosting Chaminade (N.Y.) and closing out the week against Staples (Conn.) in a rematch of last year’s CIAC Class L state championship game. 6. Northport (N.Y.), 5-0

After an 11-9 win at Half Hollow Hills (N.Y.), the Tigers defeated Walt Whitman (N.Y.), 17-2, Saturday. Jack Deliberti had two goals and three assists, Drew Miller and Timothy McLam had three goals apiece and Quinn Reynolds, Macklin O’Brien and Jack Proffe each had one goal and one assist for Northport (N.Y.), which host Sachem East (N.Y.) and Commack (N.Y.) this week. 7. Mount Sinai (N.Y.), 4-0

Lucas LaForge had six goals and one assist, Cole Marsala had three goals and two assists, Jake Spallina had two goals and one assist, Christian Colantonio had a pair of goals and Brayden Wilcken made nine saves in a 15-5 win over Eastport-South Manor (N.Y.). Mt. Sinai (N.Y.) heads to West Islip (N.Y.) and Kings Park (N.Y.) before a highly anticipated showdown with Bayport-Blue Point (N.Y.) next week. Previous: 8

8. Niskayuna (N.Y.), 3-0

The Silver Warriors defeated Saratoga Springs (N.Y.) 18-3 to continue their perfect start to the season. Greyson Vorgang had seven goals and three assists, Davey Carroll had four goals and one assist and Tanner Williams added two goals and three assists for Niskayuna (N.Y.), which has Burnt Hills (N.Y.) and Victor (N.Y.) are on the horizon this week. 9. Garden City (N.Y.), 4-1

The Trojans made it four straight wins after opening with a one-goal loss vs. Mt. Sinai (N.Y.), defeating host Cold Spring Harbor (N.Y.), 4-3, Saturday afternoon. Andrew Ottomanelli had two goals, James Paisley and Henry Gibbons had one goal apiece and Denis Fargione made five saves to lead Garden City (N.Y.), which heads to Texas to take on Highland Park (TX) and The Woodland High School (TX) this week. 10. Pleasantville (N.Y.), 4-0

The Panthers picked up a signature win Saturday, knocking off previously undefeated Shoreham-Wading River (N.Y.), 15-14, in overtime. The Panthers rallied from a one-goal deficit inside the final minute of the fourth quarter to tie the score on a goal by Daniel Picart, who then set up Erik Coleman for the OT winner, his third of the day. MID-ATLANTIC TOP 10

1. McDonogh (Md.), 8-0

The Eagles passed a major test with an 11-10 win over Boys’ Latin (Md.). Zach Hayashi won 18 faceoffs. Brendan Millon, with his brother McCabe Millon still sidelined by injury, led the scoring attack with five goals. Bogue Hahn was the only other Eagles player with more than one goal. He had two. Millon also dished out three assists. Mac Christmas and Ben Firlie each had two points on a goal and assist apiece. Previous: 1

2. Haverford (Pa.), 4-2

The Fords got six saves from Brody Murphy and four saves from Kyle Morris in a 17-6 win over Hill (Pa.). Aydan DiRocco had four goals and an assist to lead the scoring. Ryan DiRocco had a hat trick and three assists as well. Brady O’Kane also scored three goals and added a pair of assists. Colin Zeller and Wells Finn each scored twice and Rory Nesbitt had two helpers. Haverford plays Malvern Prep (Pa.) on April 11, St. Ignatius Prep (Calif.) on April 13 and Penn Charter (Pa.) on April 14. Previous: 6

3. Georgetown Prep (Md.), 7-2

The Hoyas slammed St. Xavier (Ky.) 18-6 in a cross-state matchup. They also took it to St. Stephen’s & St. Agnes (Va.) in a 13-2 win. It’s their fifth straight win since an overtime loss to Haverford. Prep plays at Landon (Md.) on April 14 and faces St. Mary’s Ryken (Md.) on April 16. Previous: 7

4. Loyola-Blakefield (Md.), 5-3

The Dons knocked St. Mary’s (Md.) from the ranks of the unbeaten with an 11-8 win. Bennett Wright made 16 saves to keep St. Mary’s at bay. Matt Burnham had five points on two goals and three assists and Mason Hill scored a hat trick while Nico Madden keyed the faceoff success. Mason Cook and Shane Elliott each had two points. Loyola plays at St. Paul’s (Md.) on April 11 and hosts McDonogh on April 14, both of whom are also unbeaten in MIAA A play. Previous: 9

5. St. Mary’s (Md.) 7-2

The Saints had a tough week with back-to-back losses to a pair of strong opponents. St. Mary’s fell to Loyola-Blakefield (Md.) 11-8 despite 9 of 14 faceoffs won by Justin Webber. Will Goers scored twice and had an assist in the loss. They turned around the next day to lose to Victor (N.Y.) 13-12 in overtime. Gavin Burlace scored four goals for the Saints, who never trailed until the fourth quarter. A late Jake Adams goal gave St. Mary’s a late lead only to see Victor score quickly to force overtime. Previous: 2

6. St. John’s (Md.), 7-2

The Cadets won their sixth straight game when they handed Heights (Md.) an 18-6 loss. They have outscored opponents, 112-53, this season. They face a top national opponent, St. Anthony’s (N.Y.), on April 13 and Bishop McNamara on April 14. Previous: 4

7. Boys’ Latin (Md.), 5-3

The Lakers fell to McDonogh 11-10. Trailing, 9-2, they rallied to make it a one-goal game but couldn’t overcome the Eagles. Liam White had a hat trick while goalie Dylan Cadigan stopped 13 shots. Matthew Higgins and Spencer Ford each scored twice. Previous: 5

8. Radnor (Pa.) 4-2

The Raptors won another huge Philadelphia area showdown to move into the Top 10. After suffering a 7-6 loss to Northeast power Garden City (N.Y.), their second one-goal loss of the season, Radnor turned around and handed Academy of the New Church (Pa.) their first loss of the year. The Raptors jumped out to a 5-0 lead before ANC rallied to take the lead briefly. Nate Lucchesi had three goals and an assist, Colin French scored a hat trick, and Jackson Gaffney had three points on a pair of goals and an assist. Max Goldstein and Mason Montrella had two points apiece and Tommy DeShan had two assists. Nick DeCain made nine saves and Carter Mountain won seven of 14 faceoffs. ANC had previously knocked off St. John’s, and Radnor also defeated Malvern Prep (Pa.) the week before. Gaffney had a hat trick in the loss to Garden City. Previous: NR

9. Academy of the New Church (Pa.) 7-1

The Lions fell from the ranks of the unbeaten with an 11-8 loss to Radnor (Pa.) in a matchup of two of Pennsylvania’s top teams. Hunter Aquino scored four goals and Lucas Flynn had a pair of scores. Nate Bradley had a goal and two assists. Trent Layton won 14 of 21 faceoffs. ANC pummeled Everest (Ont.) 16-2 with Aquino scoring seven points on four goals and three assists. Flynn and Owen Carr both had hat tricks with an assist apiece. Shane Bradley scored twice. Previous: 3

10. Malvern Prep (Pa.), 3-4

The Friars lost a third straight game, to another strong opponent, when St. Anthony’s (N.Y.) took a 14-8 win. Malvern will try to snap the streak against Haverford on April 11. Previous: 8

SOUTH TOP 10

1. Lake Mary (Fla.), 17-0

The Rams concluded the regular season with a pair of dominating victories to enter the postseason undefeated. Lake Mary defeated Lyman (Fla.) 22-1 followed by a 17-2 victory over West Orange (Fla.). Previous: 1

2. St. Mark’s (Texas), 11-1

The Lions had an idle week after their only scheduled game of the week against Episcopal School of Dallas (Texas) was canceled. Previous: 4

3. St. Andrew’s (Fla.), 12-3

The Scots enter the postseason on a sour note, falling to St. Thomas Aquinas (Fla.) 11-8. The match marks back-to-back years Aquinas has upset St. Andrew’s. Jack Schulte enters the postseason with a team-leading 40 goals. Previous: 2

4. Cardinal Gibbons (N.C.), 11-2

Ayden Turner’s two-goal, three-assist effort was not enough to help the Crusaders past Springfield (Pa.). Cardinal Gibbons lost the interstate matchup 11-8. Brady Greco had a team-leading eight ground balls. Previous: 3

5. Blessed Trinity (Ga.), 14-0

The Titans were idle last week and will return to action April 14 against Fellowship Christian (N.C.). Previous: 5

6. Bolles (Fla.), 16-2

The Bulldogs lost to Springside Chestnut Academy (Pa.) 17-14 despite a six-goal performance by Spencer Surface. Daylin John had three helpers to put him at 50 assists for the season. Previous: 6

7. The Woodlands (Texas), 13-2

The Highlanders welcomed La Costa Canyon (Calif.) and squeezed out a 5-4 win that ended at halftime due to weather. The Woodlands followed that with a dominating 26-5 victory over Cy Woods (Texas). Previous: 9

8. Lake Highland Prep (Fla.), 10-3

The Highlanders reenter the Top 10 after picking up a convincing 15-8 win over St. Edward’s (Fla.) to close out the regular season. Lake Highland Prep also has a win this year over St. Thomas Aquinas (Fla.). Previous: NR

9. Roswell (Ga.), 13-2

The Hornets had an idle week and will return to action April 13 to face Johns Creek (Ga.). Previous: 10

10. St. Thomas Aquinas (Fla.), 11-3

The Raiders followed up a huge win against Jupiter (Fla.) by defeating defending top-division state champs St. Andrew’s (Fla.) 11-8. James Finch had five goals in the win and Ethan Streiner stood on his head with 21 saves. Previous: NR

MIDWEST TOP 10

1. Culver Academy (Ind.), 11-1

The Eagles showed no rust in their return from break, combining for 79 goals in three overwhelming victories against Archbishop Moeller (Ohio), Shady Side Academy (Pa.) and Milford (Ohio). April 15 brings a highly intriguing contest as Culver plays host to Western Reserve Academy (Ohio). Previous: 1

2. Brother Rice (Mich.) 4-0

The Warriors were dominant in avenging last year’s state championship game loss, topping Hartland, 21-5. That included six goals from Hunter Polonkey (Lehigh) and five from Sam Klein (Bryant). Another big week awaits Brother Rice as it takes on a trio of top Midwest teams on a road trip: Hudson (Ohio), St. Xavier (Ohio) and St. Xavier (Ky.). Previous: 2

3. Loyola Academy (Ill.), 3-0

The Ramblers’ state championship game rematch against Lake Forest was just as hotly contested as their battle last June. It also had the same result, a one-goal victory for Loyola Academy. Next up, the Ramblers, who have allowed just nine goals in three games, head east to take on an assortment of Empire State programs. Previous: 3

4. St. Xavier (Ohio) 8-0

The youth movement continued for the Bombers in the Volunteer State. Fifteen of St. Xavier’s 16 goals in an 11-goal win over Montgomery Bell Academy came from freshmen and sophomores, including six assists from Brendan Deeley. (Khalif Hocker, Johnnie Guttman and Deeley all had hat tricks.) Then, in a 13-3 win over Ravenwood, all 13 of the Bombers’ goals came from freshmen and sophomores, including five goals and four assists from Guttman. Previous: 4

5. Dublin Jerome (Ohio), 6-0

The Celtics scored a 15-9 win over Olentangy Liberty (Ohio) Wednesday, always a meaningful game since that’s frequently the team Dublin Jerome goes up against with a trip to states on the line. Previous: 5

6. Detroit Country Day (Mich.), 7-0

There has been no letdown for the Yellowjackets since topping 2022 state champion Forest Hills Central (Mich.) to enter the Midwest’s Top 10. Indeed, they have outscored four foes since, 61-11. Watch out for a big clash April 15 as Detroit Country Day tries to take down another state champion in Hartland (Mich.), which is surely simmering after a 21-5 loss to Brother Rice. Previous: 6

7. St. Viator (Ill.), 8-0

The Lions have been dominant, winning all eight of their games by at least 10 goals. The competition will stiffen soon, however, as St. Viator takes on a very good Carmel (Ind.) team on April 15, and then travels to Loyola Academy (Ill.) the following week. Previous: 7

8. Forest Hills Central (Mich.), 3-1

The Rangers will have had more than two weeks to reflect on (and simmer about) their last game, a heartbreaking overtime loss to Detroit Country Day (Mich.), when they return to competition against Grand Rapids Catholic Central (Mich.) on April 13. Previous: 8

9. Upper Arlington (Ohio), 3-1

The Golden Bears scored a pair of impressive 10-goal Buckeye State wins over Olentangy Orange and Hudson this past week. Watch this week for Upper Arlington’s games against Archbishop Moeller (Ohio), which has a deceptive sub-.500 record given the high caliber of the teams it has played, and undefeated Mars Area (Pa.). Previous: 9

10. Trinity Louisville (Ky.), 4-3

The Shamrocks have won three straight, including impressive victories against Montgomery Bell Academy (Tenn.) and St. Xavier (Ky.), the latter by an even more impressive seven-goal margin. Trinity has an interesting contest coming up, visiting Carmel (Ind.) on April 14. Previous: NR

WEST TOP 10

1. St. Ignatius Prep (Calif.), 12-1

The Wildcats dropped their first loss of the season but still held their own against nationally-ranked Gonzaga (D.C.) in the 8-7 defeat. Jack Porter, Bruno Chapman and Stu Gates each contributed two goals, while George Vlahos led a strong defensive effort with 11 saves. St. Ignatius had collected a 23-2 win over Serra San Mateo (Calif.) before that match with Zach Quilici pacing the attack with four goals. The Wildcats have two more games against nationally-ranked opponents this week, meeting No. 5 Chaminade (N.Y.) on April 11 and No. 7 Haverford (Pa.) on April 13. Previous: 1

2. Legend (Colo.), 7-0

A notable 11-5 win over Mountain Vista (Colo.) keeps Legend as the top-ranked team in Colorado, though Cherry Creek also remains unbeaten. Magnus Langtry led the Titans with three goals and three assists against a strong MV squad, while Brodin Dodge and Matthew Dore each added three goals. Logan Giesler made 10 saves in goal. Langtry also had a team-high seven points in a 16-6 win over Columbine (Colo.) last week, tallying three goals and four assists, while Ryan Menard also registered seven points on a game-high five goals and two assists. Previous: 2

3. Mater Dei (Calif.), 12-1

The Monarchs were idle last week after earning a hard-fought win against Foothill-Santa Ana (Calif.) on April 1, a nice break after a challenging schedule to start the season that included nine games against out-of-state teams and some top opponents within California. Mater Dei is back in action against De La Salle (Calif.) on April 11. Previous: 3

4. Cherry Creek (Colo.), 9-0

The Bruins went 3-0 last week with wins over Scarsdale (N.Y.), Grandview (Colo.) and Jackson Hole (Idaho). The game against Scarsdale was the biggest challenge, but they pulled out an 8-7 victory. Cherry Creek scored a double-digit win over Grandview and beat Jackson Hole by nine. Previous: 4

5. Valor Christian (Coo.), 7-1

The Eagles bounced back from their two-goal loss to Cherry Creek with a pair of wins last week, beating Denver East (Colo.) 17-8 and routing ThunderRidge (Colo.) 18-2. Baden Brown scored five goals to lead Valor against Denver East, while Geordy Reider also had five points on three goals and two assists and Alex Rismani added four goals. Harry Luong won 15 of 20 faceoffs and had seven groundballs. Previous: 5

6. Foothill-Santa Ana (Calif.), 11-3

The Knights are back into the top 10 after a 7-5 win over Loyola Los Angeles (Calif.) on April 6, sparked by four goals and an assist from Luke Fox and preserved by goalie Cohen Krudwig’s 18 saves on 23 shots. That game should serve as a confidence booster for a challenging final month of the regular season. Foothill was coming off a 10-8 loss to No. 3 Mater Dei and its other two losses were against No. 5 Valor Christian and an early one-goal defeat against Brophy Prep (Ariz.). Previous: NR

7. Loyola Los Angeles (Calif.), 11-3

The Cubs fell to Foothill but also earned a notable overtime win against St. Margaret’s Episcopal (Calif.). Freshman Finn Hazelton netted the game winner, his second goal of the day, for the 10-9 victory. Loyola, whose other losses were against St. Ignatius and Mater Dei, travels to Texas this week for a pair of games against Dallas Jesuit and St. Mark’s. Previous: 8

8. Mountain Vista (Colo.), 7-1

The Golden Eagles dropped their first loss of the season against Legend but bounced back with a

decisive 25-1 win over Highlands Ranch (Colo.). A big game at Regis Jesuit (Colo.) is on tap for April 11. Regis also has just one loss and has also been a team to watch this season. Previous: 6

9. Bishops School (Calif.), 9-1

The Knights were idle last week but were set to return to action April 10 against La Jolla Country Day School (Calif.). Bishop’s has one loss against Colorado Academy (Colo.), a game that was followed by a big win over new No. 10 Torrey Pines (Calif.). The Knights have outscored opponents 131-62 this season. Previous: 10

10. Torrey Pines (Calif.), 6-3

The Falcons were on the cusp of rejoining the rankings last week after a March 31 win against Highland Park (Texas) and April 1 victory over Dallas Jesuit (Texas), two of the top teams in the Lone Star State. They’ve been idle since then but are back in the Top 10 after St. Margaret’s and Mercer Island (Wash.) both dropped games last week. Previous: NR
