Top Teams Hold Serve in USA Lacrosse High School Boys' Regional Top 10 Ranks

Every Tuesday during the high school lacrosse season, USA Lacrosse updates Regional Top 10 and National Top 25 rankings to reflect the results of the previous week. Below are the USA Lacrosse High School Boys’ Regional Top 10 updates through games played April 14.

Brunswick (Conn.) took control of the Northeast Region with a big win over previous national No. 1 Lawrenceville (N.J.). The Bears, though, still have plenty of unbeatens in the region who could move up if they slip up. New Canaan (Conn.), Darien (Conn.) and Fairfield Prep (Conn.) are all new to the Top 10, even if they aren’t new to being ranked historically. 

Lawrenceville (N.J.) remains atop the Mid-Atlantic Region despite suffering its first loss. The Big Red’s defeat at the hands of a strong Brunswick (Conn.) squad in overtime did not diminish their standing, in part because they own a win over No. 2 Malvern (Pa.). Malvern and No. 3 Haverford (Pa.) face off this week in a great matchup.

The South Region returns with the same top eight teams. North Paulding (Ga.) is the one newcomer. They had a strong win earlier in the year over a Roswell (Ga.) team that had a stronger strength of schedule, and now they’ve put together some more notable wins to climb into the rankings.

The Midwest Region kept the same teams ranked, just in a different order after several head-to-head matchups. The top four remain, paced by Culver Academy (Ind.), even though it and No. 3 Upper Arlington (Ohio) lost (Culver beat Upper Arlington). St. Xavier (Ohio) made a big move thanks to upending Brother Rice (Mich.). Only two unbeatens remain among the Top 10.

The West Region had only one newcomer. Unbeaten Arapahoe (Colo.) becomes the lone team with a perfect record in the West. In fact, nine of the 10 ranked teams were unbeaten last week, with only Foothill-Santa Ana (Calif.) losing a game before rebounding to cling to a Top 10 spot.

NORTHEAST

1. Brunswick School (Conn.), 6-0

In a meeting of the top two teams in last week’s USA Lacrosse national top 25, Casey Quinson  scored the empty-net winner off a heads-up pass from Sean Ryan in overtime to lift Brunswick (Conn.) to a 13-12 victory at Lawrenceville (N.J.). Quinson and Payton Anderson had four goals and one assist apiece in the rematch of last year’s Prep Nationals final. Previous: 1

2. St. Anthony’s (N.Y.), 4-2

The Friars made it seven straight wins over rival Chaminade (N.Y.), beating the Flyers, 12-6, in the first meeting this season. Luke Breslin had three goals, Kyle Bilello had two goals and an assist and Quinn Langton and Gary Merrill scored two goals apiece as St. Anthony’s (N.Y.) pulled away with a 6-0 second half. St. Anthony’s followed that up with a 13-7 loss at Lawrenceville. Previous: 2

3. Belmont Hill (Mass.), 6-0

Ben DiBattista had three goals and one assist, Will Stewart had two goals and three assists and Brady Boudreu had two goals and one assist for the Hillers in a 9-5 win at Tabor Academy (Mass.). Previous: 4

4. St. John’s Prep (Mass.), 3-0

Brady Scudder had three goals and one assist, Dan Cahill added two goals and one assist, Will Crawford scored twice and won 12 of 13 faceoffs, while Chase Kenyon won five of seven faceoffs in a 13-3 win over Malden Catholic (Mass.). Next up for the Eagles is Bishop Guertin (N.H.) April 16. Previous: 5

5. New Canaan (Conn.), 6-0

Max Lowe scored three goals, Luke Reed and Rogan Lowe had two goals apiece, Dillon Stephens (Syracuse) was solid defensively, Cam Lyden made seven saves and Jack Crowell added four in a 10-9 win at Ridgefield (Conn.). Seton Hall Prep (N.J.), Greenwich (Conn.) and Rumson-Fair Haven (N.J.) are up next for the Rams. Previous: NR

6. Darien (Conn.), 3-2

Carter Hagen (Loyola) made 10 saves, Briggs McGuckin (Bowdoin) scored three goals and Brady Pokorny (Notre Dame) had one goal and three assists as the Blue Wave followed up a big Battle of the Sound win over Manhasset (N.Y.) to knock off rival Staples (Conn.), 7-4, April 13. Previous: NR

7. Chaminade (N.Y.), 3-3

Connor Kuttin had three goals, Jack Tully had one goal and one assist and Sal Caputo was stellar in the cage for the Flyers in a 12-6 loss to St. Anthony’s. After taking on Kellenberg Memorial (N.Y.) and Fordham Prep (N.Y.), Darien makes its way to Gold Star Stadium. Previous: 6

8. East Islip (N.Y.), 8-0

Ethan Benardos had five goals and one assist, Matt McIntee had two goals and three assists, Jack Kalinowski and Matt Baldino had two goals and one assist apiece and Sean Hannigan had three assists in a 13-7 win over Hauppauge (N.Y.). Previous: 8

9. Bayport-Blue Point (N.Y.), 8-0

The Phantoms also beat Hauppauge, 13-4, with Ben Morris scoring five goals, Maclin Keyer potting a hat trick, Ryan Hannaford had two goals and one assist and Connor Curran had five assists. East Islip is next on April 17. Previous:10

10. Fairfield Prep (Conn.), 5-1

Luke Shannehan (Boston University) had four goals, Emmet Crotty (Colgate) and Timothy Shannehan (Boston University) had two goals and two assists apiece and LSM Gavin McCarthy (Bryant) added a pair of goals in a 12-7 win at Farmingdale (N.Y.). Previous: NR

MID-ATLANTIC

1. Lawrenceville (N.J.), 9-1

Conor Gately put in three goals and had three assists in a 13-12 loss to Brunswick (Conn.) on April 10. The Big Red opened up a 7-5 halftime lead but did not score in the third quarter, then had to play catch-up in the fourth quarter. Gately’s final goal with 1:15 left tied it after Alexander Swinnie picked up a key faceoff win. Chris Matia’s last-minute shot was saved to send the game to overtime. Tim Piacentini stopped 15 shots. Lawrenceville bounce back in a big way with a convincing 13-7 win over St. Anthony’s (N.Y.) on April 13. The Big Red face Perkiomen School (Pa.) and Salisbury (Conn.) this week. Previous: 1

2. Malvern Prep (Pa.), 9-1

The Friars scored 11 of the game’s first 12 goals in a 14-5 win over Episcopal (Pa.). Michael Ortlieb had three goals and two assists and Owen Mears finished with a hat trick. John Majka scored twice. Heath Jones made seven saves before leaving the game. Nick Wehmeyer won 11 of 15 faceoffs. After blanking Germantown Academy (Pa.) 15-0, Malvern put the clamps on Delbarton (N.J.) in a 7-2 win over the Jersey power. They face a key Inter-Ac Conference showdown when Haverford (Pa.) visits April 16. Previous: 2

3. Haverford (Pa.), 10-0

The Fords stopped Penn Charter (Pa.) 9-4 behind a hat trick for Aydan DiRocco, two goals and two assists from Conor Morsell and a pair of scores from Jack Long. Evan Large scored a goal and assisted another. Brody Murphy stopped eight shots and Ben McCarthy had eight ground balls while Charlie Halpert had six ground balls. Haverford topped up-and-coming Springside Chestnut Hill (Pa.) 12-5 on April 12. Murphy made 14 saves, McCarthy was 8-for-18 on faceoffs and had nine ground balls. Large had five points on a hat trick and two assists, DiRocco scored once and assisted on three goals and Brady O’Kane, Morsell and Finn Lawrence all had two goals apiece. Haverford visits Malvern on April 16 for the top spot in the Inter-Ac Conference. Previous: 3

4. Boys' Latin (Md.), 7-1

The Lakers held off Loyola Blakefield (Md.) 11-8 in MIAA play. Connor Sydnor scored four goals while Will Ohnmacht made nine saves at the other end and Parker Hoffman was superb at the faceoff X. Matt Higgins added a hat trick and assist. Boys’ Latin started the week with a commanding 14-6 win over John Carroll (Md.) on April 9. The Lakers try to stay unbeaten in MIAA play with games against Mount St. Joseph (Md.) and St. Mary’s Annapolis (Md.). Previous: 4

5. Calvert Hall (Md.), 6-4

The Cardinals had played some great teams in their first nine games, but hadn’t beaten them. Calvert Hall picked up a huge win when it stormed back from a four-goal second-quarter deficit for an 8-7 win over McDonogh (Md.) on April 12. Alex Swartz was spectacular in goal with 15 saves to aid the comeback. Owen Scott scored a hat trick, including the game-winner, Peyton Forte put in a pair of goals and Preston Huffman tied the game in the fourth quarter. The Cardinals started their MIAA week with a 12-7 win over Severn (Md.). The Cardinals play at John Carroll (Md.) on April 16. Previous: 6

5. McDonogh (Md.), 7-2

The Eagles built a 6-2 lead but couldn’t hold it in an 8-7 loss to Calvert Hall. Luke Miller has returned to the McDonogh lineup from a football injury and he led the offense with a hat trick and assist. Brendan Millon score twice. Aiden Seibel made 10 saves in net. The Eagles had no problems in with St. Mary’s Annapolis (Md.) in a 16-5 win earlier in the week. They will host Archbishop Spalding (Md.) and Loyola Blakefield (Md.) this week in MIAA action. 7. Gilman (Md.), 8-2

The Greyhounds pulled away from Archbishop Spalding (Md.) in an 11-4 win April 9. Tied at halftime, Gilman closed the second half strong. Jay Rodgers had four goals to pace the offense and Zach Parks finished with 11 saves. Mike Maloney fired in three goals and Clayton Baddley and Griffin Graham each had a pair of assists. Gilman pulled out a tight 7-5 win over Mount St. Joseph (Md.) on April 12. Severn (Md.) and St. Paul’s (Md.) challenge the Greyhounds this week. Previous: 7

8. La Salle (Pa.), 7-0

The Explorers had a balanced approach in their 17-4 win over Devon Prep (Pa.). Declin Heilig scored a hat trick, Will Trymbiski had five points, Paul Van Bastelaar scored two goals and had two assists, and Shane Dominello, Stevie Davis, Michael Rossi and JV Faliveno all had two goals apiece. Matt Nelson made four saves and Roman Ippoldo stopped three shots. La Salle shut down DeMatha (Md.) 7-1 in a game played at USA Lacrosse headquarters. The Explorers play three away games this week. 9. Landon (Md.), 10-2

The Bears picked up their eighth straight win with a 9-3 win over Georgetown Prep (Md.) to keep atop the IAC. Kevin Miller scored four times and Zach Abramson stopped 10 shots in net. They ripped through St. Andrew’s Episcopal (Md.) 20-6 to start their week. They play DeMatha (Md.) and St. Stephen’s & St. Agnes (Va.) this week. Previous: 10

10. Salesianum (Del.), 9-0

The Sals are riding a pair of one-goal wins from earlier in the season as part of an unbeaten start into the rankings. Salesianum dispelled of Archmere Academy (Del.) 14-4, then crushed Cherokee (N.J.) 16-4. They will face another significant foe when Radnor (Pa.) visits April 20. Previous: NR

SOUTH

1. St. Andrew’s (Fla.), 18-1

The Scots began playoff action with a 23-1 win over Calvary Christian Academy (Fla.). Sophomore Dylan Faison had a standout day with six goals and three assists, while fellow sophomore Shovan Eriksson had four tallies. St. Andrew’s was dominating at the X winning 22 of 26 draws. Previous: 1

2. Lake Mary (Fla.), 17-1

The Rams had a bye week after a nearly perfect regular season that only included a single one-goal loss on the record. The Rams begin postseason play with a contest against Hagerty (Fla.). Previous: 2

3. Highland Park (Texas), 13-2

The Fighting Scots had their most dominating victory of the year, toppling St. Mark’s School (Texas) by a 19-1 margin. Highland Park then survived a nail-biting 6-4 thriller over Dallas Jesuit (Texas). Harris Sands scored the go-ahead goal as Highland Park rallied from a two-goal deficit to win. Previous: 3

4. Charlotte Catholic (N.C.), 15-0

The Cougars quest for an undefeated season continued with a pair of victories last week. Jack Ransom scored six goals to help Charlotte Catholic past Myers Park (N.C.) 19-13. Charlotte Catholic then tacked on a 20-2 victory over Butler (N.C.). Previous: 4

5. Bolles (Fla.), 17-2

Seniors Lee Krotee and Daylin John-Hill along with sophomores Sean Doyle and Nolan Preston all had hat tricks in the Bulldogs’ 22-1 playoff-opening win over Paxson School (Fla.). Bolles next faces Episcopal School of Jacksonville (Fla.). Previous: 5

6. Westlake (Texas), 13-1

The Chaparrals’ winning streak reached 11 games last week after toppling Southlake (Texas) 15-5. Senior Bennett Zinn had a hat trick in the win. Previous: 6

7. Benjamin (Fla.), 15-1

The Buccaneers opened the playoffs in a big way by overwhelming Pine (Fla.) 21-0. Benjamin next faces St. Edward’s (Fla.) in a rematch of last year’s district championship. Benjamin has defeated St. Edward’s in back-to-back seasons in the district playoffs. Previous: 7

8. Lake Highland Prep (Fla.), 12-2

The Highlanders opened the postseason with a 21-3 win over the First Academy (Fla.). Owen Lennox and Drew Samaan both had hat tricks in the win. Lake Highland has a tough challenge against Bishop Moore for a district title this week. Previous: 8

9. North Paulding (Ga.), 16-0

The Wolfpack picked up another significant in-state victory by defeating Walton (Ga.) 8-7. The win follows a victory earlier this year over Roswell (Ga.). North Paulding will look to close out a perfect regular season this week with a star-studded senior class of Zachary Creel, Jack Cornwell and Kade McNeil leading the way. Previous: NR

10. Roswell (Ga.), 15-2

The Hornets returned from a two-week layoff to easily defeat Cambridge (Ga.) 14-2. Roswell had an impressive offensive outburst defeating Chattahoochee (Ga.) 21-8. Ezra Moore had five-goal efforts in both matchups last week, while Kaden Parla and Ben Weir both scored five times against Chattahoochee. Previous: 9

MIDWEST

1. Culver Academy (Ind.), 9-2

The Eagles split a couple of games against top regional competition, falling by a goal to Western Reserve Academy (Ohio) and topping Upper Arlington (Ohio) by 10. Next up, Culver seeks revenge April 19 against Hill Academy (Ont.), which was responsible for two of the Eagles' three losses last season, including in the National Prep Lacrosse Championship. Previous: 1

2. Rockhurst Jesuit (Mo.), 10-2

The Hawklets dominated against one of Missouri’s top teams, St. Louis University Jesuit, and one of Kansas’ top teams, Shawnee Mission East. Faceoff man Gentry Curtis excelled all week, going 22 of 26 from the X with 14 groundballs against the Lancers and 11 of 15 from the X against the Bills. Seniors Jack Bichelmeyer, Colin Komenda and Luke McNamara all tallied four-plus goals in the latter game. Previous: 2

3. Upper Arlington (Ohio), 7-2

The Golden Bears absorbed their second loss of the season but there's certainly no shame in falling to Culver Academy, which is regularly among the nation's top teams. A fun set of in-state opponents awaits Upper Arlington with a trip to undefeated Olentangy Liberty on April 17 and an Archbishop Moeller team April 20 that is far better than its 5-6 record. Previous: 3

4. St. Viator (Ill.), 7-2

The Lions ran their win streak to five, adding out-of-state victories over Mukwonago (Wisc.) and Carmel (Ind.) to their earlier signature wins over Brother Rice (Mich.) and New Trier (Ill.). Viator has just one game this week as it hosts a solid Benet Academy team on April 18. Previous: 4

5. Olentangy Liberty (Ohio), 7-0

The Patriots have remained undefeated while taking on a loaded schedule, handing Hamilton Southeastern (Ind.) its first loss while also surviving tough road tests against in-state foes Hilliard Davidson and Hudson. Ben Godwin had a huge night against the Explorers, with 11 second-half saves. Keegan Kuhns (3 goals, 3 assists), Luca Minitti (4 goals, 2 assists) and Broc Fitzpatrick (14 of 18 from the X) all had huge games against the Wildcats, while Jake Struck tallied four goals and two assists against the Royals. The going doesn’t get any easier with Upper Arlington looming April 17. Previous: 7

6. St. Xavier (Ohio), 7-2

The Bombers keep on rolling with seven straight wins, including edging the top-ranked team in Michigan: Brother Rice. After trailing for virtually the entire first half, St. Xavier scored five straight goals to end the third quarter and take the lead for good, with Khalif Hocker scoring the tying and go-ahead goals and Trent Yelton notching 15 saves. Earlier in the week against Archbishop Moeller (Ohio), Hocker (7 goals, 4 assists), Johnnie Guttman (4 goals, 1 assist) and Luke Sprong (2 goals, 2 assists) all delivered big performances. 7. Brother Rice (Mich.), 4-2

While the Warriors dropped another out-of-state heartbreaker (their losses to Illinois' St. Viator and Ohio's St. Xavier are by a combined three goals), they remained tops in the Mitten State with a 16-10 win over rival Detroit Catholic Central. After the Shamrocks rallied from an early deficit to take a pair of one-goal leads early in the second half, the Warriors responded with the final four goals of the third quarter and the first four of the fourth to take control. Peter Biglin and Cashton Papadelis finished with four goals apiece to lead Brother Rice. Previous: 5

8. Detroit Catholic Central (Mich.), 5-1

Down 6-1 early to rival Brother Rice, the Shamrocks found a different gear, even taking a short-lived lead early in the second half. Luke Zajdel and Connor Lucas helped lead the rally, tallying hat tricks for DCC. While the Warriors went on to win the game, the Shamrocks seemed to take that energy into the remainder of their week, pummeling St. John’s Jesuit (Ohio) and South Lyon Unified (Mich.) by double-digit margins. Previous: 6

9. Hartland (Mich.), 4-0

The Eagles’ first game in nearly three weeks was incredibly tough but they managed to top undefeated Lake Orion (Mich.) in double overtime. Hartland proceeded to hand host Northville (Mich.) its first loss the next day, 12-7, before finishing the week with a 12-9 win at East Grand Rapids (Mich.). Watch out for a big April 20 showdown against Brother Rice in a rematch of the 2021 and 2022 state championship games. Previous: 8

T10. Dublin Jerome (Ohio), 3-1

The Celtics impressed in a 9-4 win over St. Ignatius (Ohio), which they played in the state semifinals in two of the last three seasons. Freshman goalie Matthew Esguerra was sensational in his first start, making nine saves, while faceoff star Seth Siddell went 9 of 15 at the X. Previous: T10

T10. Hamilton Southeastern (Ind.), 6-1

The Royals split a pair of games in the Buckeye State, falling to undefeated Olentangy Liberty but bouncing back for an impressive 14-9 win at Worthington Kilbourne. Another big challenge looms April 19 when HSE hosts Cathedral in a battle of two of the state's top teams. Previous: 9

WEST

1. St. Ignatius Prep (Calif.), 11-2

St. Ignatius was dominant in last week’s wins, defeating Corona Del Mar (Calif.) 23-7 and allowing Archbishop Mitty (Calif.) one goal, 28-1. Serra (Calif.) and Redwood (Calif.) are up next. Previous: 1

2. Valor Christian (Colo.), 7-2

The Eagles had a collective three goals scored against them in two games; they defeated Chaparral (Colo.) 26-2 and Castleview (Colo.) 15-1. Junior middie Rush LaSelle (Army) netted six goals and had three assists across both games. They take on Legend (Colo.) and Highlands Ranch (Colo.) this week. Previous: 2

3. Torrey Pines (Calif.), 9-3

Torrey Pines defeated Santa Fe (Calif.), 13-8, in a midweek clash, then took down previously-ranked No. 10 Loyola-Los Angeles (Calif.), 11-6. Sophomore Foster Huang won 13 faceoffs and senior goalie Andrew Cook (John Hopkins) recorded 10 saves against Loyola. Next up is San Marcos (Calif.) and No. 6 Sacred Heart Prep (Calif.). Previous: 3

4. Cherry Creek (Colo.), 8-1

After three overtimes, Cherry Creek prevailed 10-9 over Denver South (Colo.) then defeated Denver East (Colo.) 16-3. The scoring efforts were led by attacks Gus Blue and Owen Burke (Denver). They are 3-0 in league play heading into Colorado Academy (Colo.) and Arapahoe (Colo.). Previous: 4

5. Jesuit Portland (Ore.), 7-1

The Crusaders came out on top against Camas (Wash.), 19-2, and Seattle Prep (Wash.), 15-5. Bellarmine Prep (Wash.) is on deck. Previous: 5

6. Sacred Heart Prep (Calif.), 10-3

Sacred Heart picked up two more wins this week against Sacred Heart Cathedral (Calif.) and De La Salle (Calif.). Against De La Salle, Senior Alex Shen (MIT) scored half of the goals and freshman net tender Teddy Oh recorded eight saves. Up next is Saint Francis (Calif.) and a top 10 showdown versus No. 3 Torrey Pines (Calif.). Previous: 6

7. Brophy Prep (Ariz.), 17-2

Brophy posted victories over Notre Dame Prep (Ariz.), 20-8, and Perry (Ariz.), 9-1, to make them 8-0 in league play. Erik Volfson (Lafayette) and Joshua Buse were at the helm of Brophy’s offense. On deck is Desert Vista (Ariz.) and Boulder Creek (Ariz.) to close out the Broncos’ regular season. Previous: 7

8. Marin Catholic (Calif.), 10-5

Marin Catholic enjoyed a bye week ahead of a trio of games this week: San Marin (Calif.), Terra Linda (Calif.) and Vista del Lago (Calif.). Previous: 8

9. Arapahoe (Colo.), 9-0

The Warriors remain undefeated after securing victories over Regis Jesuit (Colo.), Kent Denver (Colo.) and Grandview (Colo.) They are 3-0 in conference play and aim to maintain this momentum against Denver East (Colo.) and No. 4 Cherry Creek (Colo.). Previous: NR

10. Foothill-Santa Ana (Calif.), 11-5

Foothill fell 9-4 to St. Margaret’s (Calif.) then bounced back for two victories over league opponent Esperanza (Calif.), 25-1, and La Costa Canyon (Calif.) in a narrow 10-9 win. Next up is No. 3 Torrey Pines (Calif.) and El Dorado (Calif.). Previous: 9
