Brunswick Sits Atop Northeast in Latest Boys' Regional Top 10 Update

Every Tuesday during the high school lacrosse season, USA Lacrosse updates Regional Top 10 and National Top 25 rankings to reflect the results of the previous week. Below are the USA Lacrosse High School Boys’ Regional Top 10 updates through games played April 7.

Brunswick (Conn.) flipped spots with St. Anthony’s (N.Y.) at the top of the Northeast Region. Brunswick is unbeaten heading into a huge national contest against Mid-Atlantic and national No. 1 Lawrenceville (N.J.). Unbeatens Staples (Conn.), Belmont Hill (Mass.) and St. John’s Prep (Mass.) loom behind them. Ridgefield (Conn.) leads four newcomers in the top 10.

While there were some head-to-head matchups that could affect the rankings, the only change in the Mid-Atlantic Region came with Landon (Md.) joining the fray after a win over Bullis (Md.). The other results from the regional meetings followed their rankings, with Lawrenceville (N.J.) topping Malvern Prep (Pa.) and Boys’ Latin (Md.) beating Calvert Hall (Md.).

Florida squads St. Andrew’s and Lake Mary remain atop the South Region that has the same first nine teams in order as last week. Ponte Vedra (Fla.) joins the rankings as it looks to close out the season well. Charlotte Catholic (N.C.) is perfect through 13 games. Much of Florida is eyeing the playoffs for the chance to make a run and improve their ranking.

One week after no changes, there was movement galore in the Midwest Region. Top-ranked Culver (Ind.) held its spot after two more wins, but nothing else remained intact. Rockhurst Jesuit (Mo.) leaped to second and Upper Arlington to third followed by St. Viator, which picked up a big win over Brother Rice (Mich.) to vault from eighth to fourth.

The West Region had fewer changes this week with several of the top teams crossing regions to take on significant tests. The top three remain with St. Ignatius Prep (Calif.) holding the No. 1 spot. Beyond them, Cherry Creek (Colo.) moves into the top 10 at No. 4 with just one loss. A loss by Marin Catholic (Calif.) dropped it one spot behind Brophy Prep (Ariz.), but it was a relatively tame week for the West.

NORTHEAST

1. Brunswick School (Conn.), 5-0

A year removed from an overtime loss to Darien (Conn.), Brunswick (Conn.) earned their revenge with a 12-6 win over the Blue Wave with Hudson Hausmann (Virginia) scoring four goals and Lucas Garcia adding a hat trick. The Bruins followed that up with a tidy 13-6 victory over Loomis Chaffee (Conn.). Now all eyes will be on the April 10 showdown at Lawrenceville (N.J.). Previous: 2

2. St. Anthony’s (N.Y.), 3-1

After a midweek loss to Malvern Prep (PA) at Rutgers, the Friars bounced back to beat Delbarton (N.J.) 13-5 at home. Gary Merrill (UNC) had four goals and Quinn Langton (Army) and Luke Breslin (Lehigh) added two goals each. Now comes the highly anticipated round one against rival Chaminade (N.Y.) April 10 in Mineola. Previous: 1

3. Staples (Conn.), 0-0

Tristan Schaefer (Colgate) had two goals and one assist and Charlie Clark scored twice in a 5-4 win over Rye (N.Y.), which followed a season-opening 13-5 victory over Archbishop Stepinac (N.Y.). The Wreckers, who have been led by a senior-laden defense anchored by college-football bound Caleb Smith (UConn) and Sam Petrosino (Trinity College) in front of goalie Josh Marcus, head to rival Darien (Conn.) 4. Belmont Hill (Mass.), 4-0

Following a 13-6 victory over Avon Old Farms (Conn.), the Hillers edged Milton Academy (Mass.) 8-7 with Ben DiBattista (Lafayette) netting the winner midway through the fourth quarter. It was his third goal of the game to go along with one assist. Topher Batcheider had three goals, Will Stewart (Villanova) added two goals and two assists, while Eli Friedman (Cornell) won 13 of 19 faceoffs. Previous: 5

5. St. John’s Prep (Mass.), 1-0

Mother Nature had the final say in postponing the anticipated state championship rematch with Boston College HS (Mass.), dumping three inches of snow onto the field. That game has been moved to May 17, when no snow should be in the forecast. Three games are up this week for the Eagles. Previous: 6

6. Chaminade (N.Y.), 3-2

The Flyers rebounded from consecutive defeats with back-to-back impressive wins, first knocking off Saint Ignatius Prep (Calif.), 13-7, at home and then winning at Fairfield Prep (Conn.), 12-10. James Gillis scored four goals, Quinn Ball (UPenn) won 17 of 22 faceoffs, Sal Caputo (Iona) made 14 saves and Connor Kuttin (Johns Hopkins) had two goals and one assist. Now Chaminade will look to snap a six-game losing streak against St. Anthony’s (N.Y.). Previous: 7

7. Ridgefield (Conn.), 2-0

The Tigers made a big statement to open the season with a 13-5 win over Manhasset (N.Y.) with Kyle Colsey (Virginia) leading the way with five goals and two assists and Jake Carney (Sacred Heart) scored four goals with one assist. Colsey added four goals and two assists and younger brother Christopher, who had two goals and one assist against Manhasset, added a goal in a 10-6 win over Yorktown (N.Y.). Previous: NR

8. East Islip (N.Y.), 5-0

An impressive start to the season went to the next level for East Islip (N.Y.) with a 16-10 victory over Shoreham-Wading River (N.Y.). Matt Baldino (Pace) had six goals and four assists, Matt McIntee (Syracuse) had two goals and four assists, Chase Canfora won 14 of 20 faceoffs and Drew Walendowski (Villanova) made 11 saves in the win. Previous: NR

9. South Side (N.Y.), 5-0

The Cyclones perhaps announced their intention to be the favorite to win the Nassau Class B title in a field with blue bloods Garden City (N.Y.) and Manhasset (N.Y.) after a 7-4 victory over the Trojans. Michael Aiello (Skidmore) had two goals and one assist, Owen West (Bryant) scored twice and Michael Muscarella (Middlebury) made 13 saves in South Side (N.Y.)’s first win over the Trojans since 2008. Previous: NR

10. Bayport-Blue Point (N.Y.), 6-0

Ben Morris (Navy) had four goals and three assists, Connor Curran had three goals and five assists, Maclin Keyser (St. John’s) had three goals and two assists and Danny Aiello (Navy) added three goals for Bayport-Blue Point (N.Y.) in an 18-7 win over Mt. Sinai (N.Y.). Previous: NR

MID-ATLANTIC

1. Lawrenceville (N.J.), 8-0

The Big Red reinforced their top spot with an impressive 9-4 win over Malvern (Pa.) on April 6. The game was tied 1-1 early in the second quarter when the Big Red went on a 6-0 run to build an insurmountable lead. They never let Malvern get within three goals to remain unbeaten. Connor Gately had a goal and three helpers in the win, and the Big Red defense came up huge time and again. Lawrenceville handled St. Ignatius Prep (Calif.) 19-6 earlier in the week with Gatley posting 11 points on seven goals and four assists. Gately lead the team with 48 points this season. Hansen Peck has 21 goals and 10 assists and Chris Matia is a balanced 17 goals and 18 assists. Alex Swinnie has won 85 of 145 faceoffs, and Timmy Piacentini has stopped 53 percent in goal. They continue with the meat of their schedule taking on two more national powers Brunswick (Conn.) on April 10 and St. Anthony’s (N.Y.) on April 13. Previous: 1

2. Malvern Prep (Pa.), 6-1

The Friars broke away for a 7-4 win over No. 2 St. Anthony’s (N.Y.) at Rutgers to start their week before falling to No. 1 Lawrenceville (N.J.). Malvern was tied after a quarter with St. Anthony’s, but held them scoreless through the second and third quarters, then allowed only a fourth-quarter goal. Rutgers-bound goalie Heath Jones made 10 saves, and Army-commit John Majka score twice while the DiBartolomeo brothers (Lucca, Peri and Roman) combined for six ground balls. Malvern tied up Lawrenceville early, and after falling into a 7-1 hole scored three straight goals to give them hope before losing for the first time this season. The Friars have no time to dwell on it with three games this week against Episcopal (Pa.), Germantown Academy (Pa.) and Delbarton (N.J.). Previous: 2

3. Haverford (Pa.), 8-0

The Fords picked up a pair of convincing wins to remain unbeaten. They put the clamps on Sacred Heart Prep (Calif.) for an 8-1 win in a game that was suspended at halftime due to weather, then ran away from Hill School (Pa.) 15-8. Haverford shut out Sacred Heart in the second quarter. Ben McCarthy won 8-of-11 faceoffs. Connon Nolen and Evan Large scored two goals apiece and Aydan DiRocco scored a goal and assisted on another. Brody Murphy made nine saves and McCarthy won 14 faceoffs and had seven ground balls in the win over Hill. Finn Lawrence scored four times and added an assist. Nolen and Jack Long each had hat tricks and DiRocco assisted three times. Haverford will play at Penn Charter (Pa.) and host up-and-coming Springside Chestnut Hill (Pa.) on April 12. Previous: 3

4. Boys’ Latin (Md.), 6-1

Connor Sydnor scored the game-winner for the Lakers in a 11-10 overtime win over Calvert Hall (Md.). Boys’ Latin had to rally from an 8-4 deficit in the third quarter. Matthew Higgins finished with four goals, and Sydnor, Spencer Ford and Colin Kenney all scored two goals apiece as they overtook a strong Cardinals team. George Insley scored a goal and assisted the goal that forced overtime, and Will Ohnmacht made 11 saves. The Lakers started the week with an 8-5 win over Archbishop Spalding (Md.). John Carroll (Md.) and Loyola Blakefield (Md.) are up this week. Previous: 4

5. McDonogh (Md.), 6-1

The Eagles’ offense was humming with its two biggest outputs of the season. McDonogh soared by St. Paul’s (Md.) 21-12 and then overran Severn (Md.) 20-3. McDonogh remains in MIAA action with St. Mary’s Annapolis (Md.) and Calvert Hall (Md.) this week. Previous: 5

6. Calvert Hall (Md.), 4-4

The Cardinals are only .500 but they have proven they can play with anyone. They beat St. Mary’s Annapolis (Md.) 9-5 on April 2 behind Two goals apiece for Cody Collier, Jackson Mitchell and Owen Scott. Peyton Forte and Mitchell had two assists apiece. They then saw a four-goal lead in the third quarter dissipate in an 11-10 overtime loss to Boys’ Latin on April 5. Scott scored three goals and posted two assists, and the Cardinals got two goals apiece from Preston Huffman, Mitchell and Will Schoonmaker. Alex Swartz stopped nine shots. After taking on Severn (Md.), the Cardinals aim to bump off McDonogh (Md.) on April 12. Previous: 6

7. Gilman (Md.), 6-2

The Greyhounds almost doubled up St. Ignatius (Ohio) 15-8 behind four goals and two assists from Jay Wilkerson. Mike Maloney had four points on two goals and two assists, and Griffin Graham and James Meyer each had two goals and an assist. Wilkerson scored five goals and had two assists in a 25-7 win over John Carroll (Md.) on April 5. Clayton Baddley had a hat trick and three assists. Meyer and Jay Rodgers also scored hat tricks while Maloney scored twice and assisted twice. John Maloney had a goal and assist. Archbishop Spalding visits April 9 and Mount St. Joseph (Md.) hosts them April 12. Previous: 7

8. La Salle (Pa.), 5-0

The Explorers knocked off unbeaten Cape Henlopen (Del.) 15-9. La Salle jumped out to a 7-1 halftime lead and held off Cape. La Salle dominated in the back-to-back games that followed, first blanking Roman Catholic (Pa.) 16-0 and then finishing off Father Judge (Pa.) 16-1. The Explorers host Devon Prep (Pa.) and DeMatha (Md.) this week. Previous: 8

9. St. Paul’s (Md.), 5-2

The Crusaders split their week in the MIAA. After losing 21-12 to McDonogh (Md.), St. Paul’s bounced back with an 11-4 win over St. Mary’s Annapolis (Md.). St. Paul’s bolted out to a 7-1 halftime lead and never let St. Mary’s catch up. The Crusaders host Mount St. Joseph (Md.) and John Carroll (Md.). Previous: 9

10. Landon (Md.), 8-2

The Bears earned a key 13-8 win over Bullis (Md.) in a key IAC matchup to jump into the rankings. Bucknell-commit Sean Murray scored four times, Anthony Panetti (Bucknell) had two goals and an assist, and Tufts-bound Davis Owens had a pair of goals, caused two turnovers and was instrumental on the wing where he helped corral five ground balls. Landon snapped a 5-5 tie with a pair of goals and held off Bullis from there with Lafayette-commit Talan Smith coming up big at the faceoff X and Eli Smink providing physical defense. 1. St. Andrew’s (Fla.), 17-1

Dylan Faison’s 12-goal week helped propel the Scots to a perfect regular season against in-state competition. St. Andrew’s picked up wins last week against Christ the King (N.C.), Gulliver Prep (Fla.) and St. Thomas Aquinas (Fla.). The sophomore Faison had hat tricks in all three contests, including a five-tally performance against Gulliver Prep. Previous: 1

2. Lake Mary (Fla.), 17-1

The Rams closed out the regular season with a trio of victories last week, including a tight 10-9 victory over Lake Highland Prep (Fla.). Lake Mary also picked up a 9-6 win over Seton Hall Prep (N.J.) and a 15-2 victory over Viera (Fla.). Previous: 2

3. Highland Park (Texas), 11-2

The Scots head into a crucial week with momentum by riding a four-game winning streak. Highland Park picked up a 14-0 win over McKinney (Texas), which was followed by an 11-6 win over Southlake (Texas). Previous: 3

4. Charlotte Catholic (N.C.), 13-0

The Crusaders continued their undefeated season, earning a 16-7 win over Dutch Fork (S.C.). Charlotte Catholic followed that with a 12-8 win over Christ School (N.C.). Previous: 4

5. Bolles (Fla.), 16-2

The Bulldogs’ regular season ended with a 15-6 loss to Our Lady of Good Counsel (MD.). Senior Jacob Campen had three goals in the losing effort. Daylin John-Hill had a team-leading 78 points during the regular season. Previous: 5

6. Westlake (Texas), 11-1

The Chaparrals returned from a two-week break to defeat Memorial (Texas) 17-5. Westlake then finished out the weekend with a 15-8 win over Southlake (Texas). Previous: 6

7. Benjamin (Fla.), 14-1

The Buccaneers picked up a 21-1 win over Ransom Everglades (Fla.) with junior Ford Cash scoring a game-high five points. Benjamin finished the regular season with a 12-11 win over Jupiter (Fla.) after rallying from being a goal down in the second half. Jack Kelleher and Sean Sheehan had four-goal, one-assist efforts in the win over Jupiter. Previous: 7

8. Lake Highland Prep (Fla.), 11-2

The Highlanders had a strong start against Lake Mary (Fla.), leading 5-3 after the first quarter, but Lake Highland was unable to pull off the upset. Lake Highland;s regular season closed with a 10-9 loss to Lake Mary. Drew Samaan had a hat trick in a losing effort. Previous: 8

9. Roswell (Ga.), 13-2

The Hornets got a week off after their 16-5 win versys Centennial (Ga.) on March 27. Roswell returns to action to face Cambridge (Ga.) on April 10. Previous: 9

10. Ponte Vedra (Fla.), 11-6

The Sharks closed out a difficult regular season with a pair of wins, first defeating Fletcher (Fla.). The victory was followed by a 7-6 win over Oak Hall (Fla.). Ponte Vedra has lost three games this season by a single goal. Previous: 10

MIDWEST

1. Culver Academy (Ind.), 8-1

The Eagles entered their spring break with a thrilling one-goal win over Gonzaga (D.C.). There was much less stress in their return to play, as they topped Spire Academy (Ohio) and St. Xavier (Ky.) by a combined score of 44-5. Expect a little more tension this weekend as Culver takes on two of the area’s best in Western Reserve Academy (Ohio) and Upper Arlington (Ohio). Previous: 1

2. Rockhurst Jesuit (Mo.), 7-2

The Hawklets made it four straight wins since returning from D.C., including an impressive 20-5 victory over Chaminade, one of the top teams in Missouri. The win included multiple records as Luke McNamara broke the state career goals mark in the midst of an eight-goal performance against the Red Devils while Reid Moshier tied the state single-game assists mark with seven. Previous: 4

3. Upper Arlington (Ohio), 6-1

Upon their return from Colorado, the Golden Bears swept a trio of in-state opponents, including particularly solid Mason and Worthington Kilbourne teams. Juniors Jack Caine and Chase Morgan finished the week with 10 points apiece, seniors Quinn Crotty and Tommy Janowicz contributed four-goal games and junior Will Schauss shone at the X. Previous: 5

4. St. Viator (Ill.), 4-2

The most impressive victory of the week has to go to the Lions, who edged Michigan powerhouse Brother Rice in overtime. High Point commit Emerson McGrath, a junior, provided the game-winner in overtime while senior Driese Raap (5 goals, 1 assist) and junior Wes Starr (4 goals) tallied hat tricks to lead St. Viator to victory in a back-and-forth contest. 5. Brother Rice (Mich.), 3-1

The Warriors split a pair of games against top Land of Lincoln competition, edging Wheaton Academy by three and falling in overtime to St. Viator. In the latter, Brother Rice kept battling, despite trailing 6-1 after a quarter. Indeed, the Warriors trailed at the end of each quarter but still managed to force overtime. Previous: 2

6. Detroit Catholic Central (Mich.), 3-0

The Shamrocks picked up another dominant victory, topping Cranbrook (Mich.) 26-2 on April 4. What better way to go into a rematch of last year’s state championship game as DCC travels to Brother Rice on April 9 for a must-watch contest. Previous: 6

7. Olentangy Liberty (Ohio), 4-0

The Patriots picked up a pair of impressive wins, over Dublin Jerome (Ohio) and Mount Lebanon (Pa.), one of the top teams on the western side of the Keystone State. In the latter game, Jack Struck set the tone, scoring four of Liberty's first five goals. In the former, it was Keegan Kuhns connecting early and often (and setting up teammates early and often) to help the Patriots past the Celtics. Previous: NR

8. Hartland (Mich.), 1-0

The Eagles will play their first games since March 20 when they take on in-state foes Lake Orion and Northville April 9 and 10. It’s quite a way to return to action as the Dragons and Mustangs are a combined 5-0. Previous: 9

9. Hamilton Southeastern (Ind.), 5-0

The Royals return from break with a trip to the neighboring Buckeye State as they’ll take on undefeated Olentangy Liberty as well as a solid Worthington Kilbourne team that is significantly better than its 3-3 record might suggest. Previous: 10

T10. Dublin Jerome (Ohio), 2-1

The Celtics absorbed their first loss in a rematch of last year’s Region 1 championship game, as Olentangy Liberty got revenge with a 16-11 victory. UMass Amherst commit Xander Johnson shone despite the loss, scoring five of Dublin Jerome’s 11 goals, while junior Davis Pyser tacked on four goals for the Celtics. Previous: 3

T10. St. Xavier (Ohio), 5-2

Give the Bombers credit. After starting 0-2 with a pair of one-goal losses to Hamilton Southeastern (Ind.) and Upper Arlington (Ohio), St. Xavier has won five straight, including their April 5 win over longtime Missouri power MICDS. Luke Sprong had a particularly impressive week with hat tricks in all three of the Bombers’ games, including a five-goal performance against in-state foe Lakota East. Previous: NR

WEST

1. St. Ignatius Prep (Calif.), 9-2

The Wildcats had a tough East Coast tour, falling 19-6 to Mid-Atlantic No. 1 Lawrenceville School (N.J.) then they endured a 13-7 loss to New York’s Chaminade. St. Ignatius is back out West to take on Corona del Mar (Calif.) and Archbishop Mitty (Calif.). Previous: 1

2. Valor Christian (Colo.), 5-2

Valor Christian shut out both of its opponents last week, sweeping Jackson Hole (Wyo.) 14-0 followed by a 24-0 win over ThunderRidge (Colo.). The Eagles continue conference play this week against Chaparral (Colo.) and Castle View (Colo.). Previous: 2

3. Torrey Pines (Calif.), 7-3

Coming off a bye week, Torrey Pines faces Santa Fe Christian (Calif.) and Loyola-Los Angeles (Calif.). Previous: 3

4. Cherry Creek (Colo.), 6-1

Cherry Creek lands itself in the top 10 after picking up three impressive wins over Olympus (Utah), Legend (Colo.) and Grandview (Colo.). This week they battle league opponents Denver South (Colo.) and Denver East (Colo.). Previous: NR

5. Jesuit Portland (Ore.), 5-1

Last week, Jesuit Portland shut out West Linn (Ore.) 18-0. This week they face off against Camas (Wash.) and Seattle Prep (Wash.). Previous: 5

6. Sacred Heart Prep (Calif.), 8-3

Sacred Heart swept Germantown (Pa.) 16-0, led by attack Andrew Shen with five goals and three assists. This week the Gators take on De La Salle (Calif.). Previous: 6

7. Brophy Prep (Ariz.), 15-2

After defeating Curtis (Wash.) 22-13, Brophy posted a 12-7 victory over De La Salle (Calif.). Joshua Buse scored four times and Laird Miller found the net three times. Goalie Ryan Peitzmeier recorded 11 saves while Deion James won 14 faceoffs and had nine ground balls. Up next is Notre Dame Prep (Ariz.) and Perry (Ariz.). Previous: 8

8. Marin Catholic (Calif.), 10-5

Marin Catholic went 1-2 in New Jersey, defeating New Providence (N.J.) 19-7 before falling 10-7 to Chatham (N.J.) followed by an 11-6 loss to Rumson-Fair Haven (N.J.). They return to California to face San Marin (Calif.). Previous: 7

9. Foothill-Santa Ana (Calif.), 9-4

The Knights fell 10-8 in a narrow loss to Monte Vista (Calif.). Foothill has three opportunities to bounce back this week against St. Margaret’s (Calif.), Esperanza (Calif.) and La Costa Canyon (Calif.). Previous: 9

10. Loyola-Los Angeles (Calif.), 8-3

Last week, Loyola defeated Corona del Mar (Calif.) 8-3. The Cubs have four games ahead, Chaminade (Calif.), St. Francis Athletics (Calif.), Harvard-Westlake (Calif.) and No. 3 Torrey Pines (Calif.). Previous: 10
